The front reception staff were lovely. The hotel is old and needs a renovation. It is a block from the famous tourist stairs which was awesome but the area is not a good place to stay if vacationing.

Ridiculously noisy. It may be out of the hotel's control but neighbouring rooms made so much noise that sleep was not possible the first night and near midnight the second night. Good loca5near Selaron steps.

The Americana hotel in Lapa
Hotel Americana is an older hotel functional, the staff were very accomodating, i had an issue with the next room there airconditionor was very loud , they had it set for a certain tempurature, therefor it would shut off and turn itself on intermittingly not too much sleep for a few night . They staff located me to a new room which is great! Located in Lapa close to gloria metro and the cinlandia metro is a ten minute walk with the tram there as well, lots or restaurants around . The price was very inexpensive.

Good location on a quiet street.
Hotel was in good part of town. We were there just to visit the US Consulate which was within walking distance. Hotel was dated and could use a complete renovation, but at least it was clean. Staff was nice.

Close to Lapa Steps and Lapa nightlife which is great. Service good. The rest is pretty average. Room minimal and old and paper thin walls in a loud area. Practically cannot shower as floods the bathroom. Breakfast is at another hotel which is weird (not that good either). No lift. The street and immediate area could certainly be considered a bit shady at night.

Horrendous!!!
We paid £80 for a double room for 1 night (due to World Cup inflation). We we completely ripped off, this was the worst hotel we have seen in 5 months round South America. Located on a dingy dark road, not at all safe at night. Decor from the 1970s. Dirty room. Strange plastic pillows/duvet which leave you very hot! Wifi only works in reception. Breakfast not included. Staff only speak Portuguese but were friendly, using google translate to communicate. Most I would willingly pay for this room is £5-10. Definitely advise finding a different hotel.

The Spanish Steps (Escadaria Selaron Steps)
We had a terrific time, but this hotel is very old; rubberized pillows, poor bedding quality, and thin walls; not for the Faint of Heart. Internet is superb! The best we found in Rio! Great location, very nice and helpful desk people, but the hotel is far below the standard you would see in North America. The area was very Bohemian, and we loved it, but some people might find it scary except young men traveling in a group. Cab ride @$15.00 to Copacabana Beach, and it is a 5-10 minute walk to Downtown Rio which is well worth a see or a daily walk. The restaurant across from the Spanish Steps (which are 3 doors down) is a GREAT place to eat called The Gastronomia Da Lapa....cheap beer and lots of good food! Lots of security because of World Cup; we felt totally safe, not sure what it will be like after it is all over.

Nice hotel. Simple and no thrills but the staff was excellent. Very helpful in helping us get around Rio. I would be more hesitant to stay there with small kids.

DONT GET SCARED WHEN YOU GET THERE
My friend and I stayed for 7 nights and it was wonderful. The staff was superb. I will be coming back and stay at the same hotel. i love it.

Decent price but the location is dangerous
I stayed at this hotel for 3 days but I was afraid to be out at night because there are homeless and gangs around, the staff was very helpful and kind and the rooms are ok for what you pay for and as you would expect from a 1 star hotel and nothing more, you get free wireless service, air con and cable tv and if you have a problem or need something fixed then they will help you right away.

This hotel is in a good location as its very close to the Lepo nightlife district. There are also a lot of police around which is comforting as it is also quite an edgy neighbourhood. The hotel is more like a motel. The room was dark but fine. The staff were quite nice. The TV has Eng stations. I would recommend it because of ifs location and price. I

You Get What You Pay For
I would put this place in the barely tolerable category. The room is small, the walls need painting, but the bathroom is nice. My main complaint is the Air Conditioner only has one speed (activated by a wall switch). You´re either too hot or too cold much of the time. They only give you a thin sheet on the bed. Fortunately, I brought a blanket along. Bring a blanket or two, a sleep shade (the curtain is thin), and maybe a sound conditioner. The Tv has many channels, but only about 4 in English. 4 Block walk to a Metro station.

the hotel is basic for the price but It's in a popular weekend going out street. Also it's near Cinelandia metro which is useful. My only gripe (apart from price) is that there was no tourist info, maps etc at the time of staying.

Interesting place
So when you first get to this place in the morning, it looks like you made the wrong the decision on choosing this hotel. But then you go out into the street at night. This place is nuts. All kinds of music and interesting people. Drinks in the street are cheap and strong. Chicks are hot. Varrious shady looking characters . The music is bumping. And the street of full of people. Parts of the street smells like human waste, but yet there are beautiful people all around. But don't be surprised if there is a hooker checking into the hotel before you do.

This hotel review cannot be dissociated from the locale in which it resides- LAPA- an area downtown Rio that can be described as a cross between the Bowery in lower Manhattan and the East Village in Manhattan of about 30 years ago. So if you are looking to hang out, have cheap (and not bad) food in a neigborhood that looks like it may fall apart at any moment, then please come and enjoy. It is a circus like atmosphere (the hotel as well as the street area) and one that can be savored. The hotel is more of a motel. Yes, the windows could not be locked, and the curtain covered only half of the window, but there was a safe deposit box, clean sheets (weird plastic pillow covers) and an actual bidet!! in the bathroom. And for all the screaming I heard when I was outside, unbelievably, my room was very quite after I turned out the lights. (Except for a woman who coughed so loud I thought she might have TB!) This place- hotel and street scene- that should not be missed. And oh, if you come by, when you arrive at the "Love Hotel" or "Hotel of Loving" or some such thing- you are only a few feet away from this hotel Americana. Enjoy.

A poor hotel
The hotel located in a very small street inside the downtown, the surrounding environment is somehow dirty, the the hotel is rather old, coarse and not clean. The air there is only one window just beside the door, no window in the bathroom, after your shower, the water vaporize cover around the room. I lived there three days, no servants tidy up my room. The only advantage is that the price is rather cheap and it is very close to downtown.

Outdated hotel with friendly/helpful staff
At a first glance, the hotel is quite creepy, actually. It is really old and it needs some serious remodeling, but it was always clean. Surroundings look unsafe but I felt okay walking around during night and day, and its location is definetely a plus if you are doing business. A definite plus was its staff, who were ALWAYS helpful, extremely friendly and really impressed me. In short, I would stay there again for their convenient location and great staff, but I would not stay there if it were only for their facilities, rooms or surroudings.

Hotel Americano - real Rio de Janeiro
If you are looking for your typical American hotel, this is not what you need. But if you are looking for something cheap and very secure this is the place. With one nite at any other hotel, I got here two or three nites. So, it all depends in what you want. I rather have money in my pocket to spend on doing other things, I only go to the hotel to sleep and that a shower; but that is just me. The feeling of this Hotel is more like a Motel, for those who understand the difference.
