This hotel review cannot be dissociated from the locale in which it resides- LAPA- an area downtown Rio that can be described as a cross between the Bowery in lower Manhattan and the East Village in Manhattan of about 30 years ago. So if you are looking to hang out, have cheap (and not bad) food in a neigborhood that looks like it may fall apart at any moment, then please come and enjoy. It is a circus like atmosphere (the hotel as well as the street area) and one that can be savored.
The hotel is more of a motel. Yes, the windows could not be locked, and the curtain covered only half of the window, but there was a safe deposit box, clean sheets (weird plastic pillow covers) and an actual bidet!! in the bathroom. And for all the screaming I heard when I was outside, unbelievably, my room was very quite after I turned out the lights. (Except for a woman who coughed so loud I thought she might have TB!)
This place- hotel and street scene- that should not be missed. And oh, if you come by, when you arrive at the "Love Hotel" or "Hotel of Loving" or some such thing- you are only a few feet away from this hotel Americana. Enjoy.
