As good a hotel if you are in a budgetPosted Jul 25, 2013
I have no complaints. I found exactly what I expected: a small, clean and reasonably comfortable place to sleep while visiting Rio de Janeiro. It is situated near everything, except for the beaches to the West, but there is plenty of public transportation to get there (taxis, subway, buses). While it may be true that it is better not to wander alone late at night (except from Thursday evening on, when the district is full of life), I did not see it particularly more dangerous than other places at other cities I have been to in Latin America or elsewhere. There are some people living in the street and wandering about in some places, but they don't bother you at all. There are good restaurants (the adega Flor de Coimbra, for example, is great), bars and places where you can dance all around. If, instead, you want to pray, the Catholic cathedral, the Presbyterian cathedral and many other churches are nearby as is the downtown area with all its attractions. You can even go on foot, it will not take you very long to get to get to everything that is worth seeing. The front desk guys are serious, but helpful. The internet was not as bad as some report it. And I agree that breakfast is copious and varied.

Overpriced in a scruffy areaPosted May 27, 2013 on Hotels.com
The first room was totally inadequate. Tiny and no closets or stotage space. We asked to be moved. The next room was nicer and at least had storrage bins. The staff was nice but did not speak English. Decent breakfast brought to theroom was included. After 3 nights we moved to Flamenco area. We paid $130.00 USD vs $100.00 USD at the Villa Rica but the difference in the hotel and neighborhood was night ane day.

Area was noisy throughout night, but for someone younger or less tired this may not have been a problem. Staff helpful but with limited or no English - we should all make an effort to learn Portuguese! Taxi called by staff had a driver who charged more on arrival at airport than we had agreed, and kept asking for money before we reached airport, refusing to allow me to leave car until money paid.Had little time to explore area and really only used hotel to sleep.
A good deal for bargain hunters !!!Posted Sep 26, 2012 on Hotels.com
Stayed for a total of 5 nights on 3 occasions. Staff are very friendly. Except for a lady named Isabel, no one is that proficient in Englsh. Hotel located in a seedy but Colourful neighbourhood. So long as one does not loiter late through the nights, it is safe !!!!

Not very goodPosted Jun 4, 2012
I will not recommend this hotel as it is placed in not very good area. Staff doesn't speak English at all and room cleanness is not even close to satisfying. Windows were broken and crashed. Although the price of the hotel is not very high but still try to avoid it as it is equal to maximum two stars hotels and you can find for same price better ones.

Villa RicaPosted Feb 3, 2012 on Hotels.com
Close to good dinning and metro stop. Hotel staff was helpful but not very knowledgable with english. The neighborhood was on the dingy side but very safe, if you can look past the run down neighboorhood this hotel is good. The breakfast was very nice they bring it to you in your room because they don't have a dinning area in the hotel. I would gladly stay there again.

Vila Rica - Rio de JaneiroPosted Mar 15, 2011
This was during Carneval, so all hotels are filled and have very high rates. I was at Vila Rica for one night only. It is not in a very touristy area, but if you want to see more native Rio, then go for it. The room was small, but adequate for one night. Internet was sporadic. They have very nice pictures of Rio at different points in time in the stairwell.
