We remembered Riquewihr from a short stop during a bicycle tour twenty five years ago. This quaint and beautiful village is in the heart of the Alsatian wine country. It's gotten a bit kitschy over the years - the village well pump and basin had been filled with Easter decorations, as were many of the main street buldings - but is still the fairy tale place we remembered. The Hotel de la Couronne is in the heart of the village, and very unpretentious. After an interesting climb up a spiral stone stairway to the "deuxieme etage" (3rd floor to N. Americans, not sure if there was an elevator) we entered a hallway containing attractive antique furnishings. Our beds were pretty unforgiving by North American standards, and my poor 6 ft 4 in husband extended well beyond the foot of the bed, but we had a good bathroom, a TV, and were otherwise comfortable. Breakfast in the attractive breakfast room was excellent and reasonably priced. The hotel had an adjacent parking courtyard, at a reasonable price, a real plus in the mostly pedestrian walled village. I would highly recommend this hotel for a real Alsatian experience.
