“Great value, had a wonderful vacation”

We read a lot of reviews before booking this trip and we were a little hesitant because one would be great and the next would be awful. We stayed from Nov 5 - Nov 12. We had a wonderful experience, They are in the middle of renovating a few buildings but that did not effect our stay. Food was good and everyone was very nice. There were a few little things here and there, like our room was cold, but we just turned off the AC and had the front desk send some additional blankets. The food was good and there was a decent variety. The reservation restaurants were very good, especially the Italian and Japanese restaurants. We did not care for the food at the Mexican restaurant. The beach is a little rocky but we were expecting that based on other reviews. We met several folks that had been there 3 times, and we can now see why. It's not a 5 star hotel, but it is a strong 3 or 4 in our book and that is OK with us. I would do it all over again. Best Value for the money.

    “Will go back”

Had a great time. Lots to do. Overall food was good for all inclusive. Breakfast service a little slow at times this trip. This is our third time at this hotel. Puerto Aventuras a nice location. Decent snorkeling is in front of hotel. Pools and beach chairs not crowded. Staff friendly. Recommend hotel.

    “Catalonia Reviera Maya review”

Hotel is just the right size with right amenities and is 5 minutes walk from the modern little city of Puerto Aventuras where you can experience a free view of dolphins in training and experience them for yourself if you choose to pay. In town you can charter fishing and diving boats. The hotel has absolutely fantastic shows each night plus a nice disco and game room. The staff is friendly, fabulous and very talented. The hotel is well maintained and clean with beautiful landscaping. There are four nice pools in two separate areas. There are two hotels with two lobbies, the Catalonia Yucatan Beach is the other one, but they are really one shared property and you are free to roam between the two. The beach area is nice and snorkeling is good. The beach is on a small bay protected from the ocean, but you can venture out into deeper water there too snorkeling and cat sailing. Wireless internet in the rooms is free if you have a computer. The food is very good with two restaurants open during the day and four more you can book for nights if you want a more private, pampered setting. We have been there three times and we like the warm setting and friendly, helpful staff.

    Area recommendations
Puerto Aventuras is just a 5 minute walk. There you can see a dolphin water park and experience them for yourself for a fee, or just watch. There are small stores and restaurants/bars, plus a dock where you can charter boats for fishing and scuba. There are scuba vendors there or you can book through the hotel as well. It's a nice venue and a gated little town servicing this resort area.

    “Get Hotel & Staff!”

My husband & I were pleased with this hotel for what we paid. Check-in was easy. We were in a privileged room which I would suggest to everyone. Staff is very friendly. The staff that does the daily activities & theater are awesome! I would go back just because of them. They nicknamed me & my husband Mr. & Mrs. Family because of our matching family tattoos. Food was okay at the buffet. I liked breakfast better than the lunch. The dinners were great at the restaurants. My fav was the Japanese. Book them as soon as you can and get in line early like 8am so you don't have to wait in line too long. My fav bartenders were Aaron, Armando, and Nazario. Bring big cups with you and they will fill them full with your choice of drink. Also - reuse your water bottles and fill them at the bars or bring a big water bottle with you to use. Beach is rocky but bring water shoes & you'll be fine. Go out early between 7-9 & put your towels on your beach chairs to save them. After 9 am they are pretty much all taken. I went around 8 each morning & had no problem getting a good spot. Also make sure to lock up your wallet & passports in the safe ASAP. We didn't & had our 2 visa cards stolen. I'm thinking it happened in the morning our first full day when we went to the beach. Even with that mishap we still had a great time and I'd go back. We didn't let one bad person ruin our trip. I can't wait to go back!

    Area recommendations
Also take the Mayan excursion to Coba and Chichen Itza. We went on a day long tour with Roby. We hiked in the jungle, climbed one of the highest mayan temples, rappled into a cave with water, and zip lined. It was worth the $125 each. Wish I would have done another excursion because it was awesome. Also - the more social you are the better time you will have. The first few days we kept to ourselves because we are a little on the shy side but then we started being more social and outspoken and that is how we met a lot of great people. That made our trip 100x better. Just be open and talk to others and get involved in the poolside activities. That is how you will get to know a lot of people.
    When to go
We went Oct 20-26th. The first 5 days of our trip had amazing weather. The last day was bad because Hurricane Rena was coming. I thought it a great time to go. It was hot but not too hot and not overly crowded.
    Getting there
It is about an hour drive to the hotel. I recommend booking the shuttle and pre-pay for it.
    Getting around
We never went anywhere but the Marina. I heard another guy say he was able to round up a few people to go to Playa so they could take a taxi for about $5 USD a person which is really cheap because if you go on your own its about $30-40 1 way.
    What to pack
Bug spray! You can buy it there too but bring it if you have it. I'm a bug magnet. Even in MN I'm always getting bit. I needed it for my legs and feet the most. My arms never got any bites. Pack big cups for your drinks. They serve you with baby cups. You can buy them there but I would suggest you bring them to save money. Nice dress clothes for dinner and night time. I had a few dresses and skirts with me and that worked out nicely. People aren't too fancy but you do want to look nice for dinner if you are eating at a restaurant. Bring pesos. The hotel doesn't take USD. You can exchange there but they only give you 11 or 11.50 exchange rate. I think banks give you 13.50 or so. They do take Visa but make sure you lock them up or you will be SOL. The tour desk did take AMEX so we got lucky there. Bring water shoes.
    Dining
Japenese was the best, then Italian, then the steak house, and then the Mexican good. Dinner buffets are okay. Food is warm but not hot. That also depended on the time you went to eat. Breakfast buffet was good. I liked the outdoor buffett better. Birds do fly around in there from time to time which is kind of annoying but we never had any issues with it.
    Nightlife
Not much happens at night. They have a theater which is put on by the safe. Those shows are awesome. After that you can go to the sports bar and they have a nighclub above that opens up and you can dance in there. Truth - we never stayed up past 11:30 because we started drinking at 11am and by night we were ready for bed.
    Outdoors or beach
Beach was nice. It was rocky but again if you bring shoes you'll be fine. There are people that tan topless on the beach area so if you don't like to see that then stay by the pools. Again - get your towels on your chairs early in the morning and get a prime spot. I would put magazines on our chairs and we'd come and go all day long and no one ever messed with our stuff. It was really nice.
    Other
Other than having an issue with our Visa cards I think this hotel is great. I was unfortunate that one bad person had to ruin it for the rest of the staff there. You don't need to tip but it is nice if you do. So with our visa cards being gone we weren't able to get any add'l cash so we were not able to tip as much as we would have liked to. Hotel and most of Mexico only takes Visa or Mastercard.

    “Beautiful!”

My husband and I just returned from our honeymoon and while I was a bit skeptical when booking, this was the best bang for our buck. I was extremely happy that we ended up going here. The staff was wonderful and the hotel was gorgeous. We had a "privileged" honeymoon suite, so I am not sure what the other rooms looked like but ours was perfect! Not as big as I expected, but it had all the room we needed. Nightlife in the resort is a bit scarce, but they offer shows at the theater every night which were pretty good. I would definitely recommed this hotel to others and would consider going back here again!

“Catalonia Riviera Maya Resort 3 star”

For the price this is a decent resort. They are lacking in their attentiveness to maintenance issues, but currently under renovations. The food and drinks are excellent with a good variety. Their inclusion of snorkeling, Kayaking, and Catamarans gives you full enjoyment of the beach at no additional cost. Bicycling is also available at no additional cost. The pool areas are spectacular. I recommend that reservations for the specialty restaurants be made on the first day because they fill up quick. The steak restaurant is a must! Food service, housekeeping, and general staff are all very nice and represent the resort well. Front desk staff is difficult to deal with. The resort is an excellent choice for a wedding, yet also very family friendly. We really enjoyed our stay with the exception of the maintenance issues we had to contend with. All things considered I would recommend this resort to anyone.

A short 10 minute walk to the marinas to enjoy fishing, and interactive swims with dolphins, manatees, nurse sharks, and sting rays. The area is a gated community so bicycling can be enjoyed in a safe environment.

“Wish we would have booked the upgraded rooms...”

Once we arrived at the Catalonia we were brought to a room that was tucked in a corner, had a broken mirror, and looked like dingy to say the least. After refusing to stay in that room, the desk clerk gave us three other options (after he said they were all booked and had no other rooms available) to view which were all the same, but were located closer to the pool/ocean. We opted for one of these the first night and were told we could upgrade to a priviledged room tomorrow if we went back to front desk. Well, that was the same song and dance we were given every day we tried to upgrade, but each day they said there was nothing available. We go very frustrated that they wasted our time each day by saying something would be available the next day, but then wasn't. There was a large group of us at this hotel for a friends wedding and everything was a battle to get. It got very frustrating by the end of the trip because it is suppose to be vacation. If you are going to stay at this hotel, make sure you book a priviledged room, otherwise you will be disappointed.

“Fabulous stay at Catalonia! Didn't want to leave!”

My sister and I just returned from Hotel Catalonia and have only great things to say about it! The only tiny downside was the drive from the airport to the hotel, it was longer than expected (about 1.5 hours), but like I said this was such a minor issue! The staff was incredibly helpful, nice and everyone was trustworthy. We felt we were in good hands our entire stay as well as during excursions. The hotel is in a gated community so they even provided us with a taxi service to Playa Del Carmen and back, safely and easily. The hotel was beautiful as well. The spa was more amazing than we expected from an all-inclusive resort- it was big yet serene and we had access to sauna, wading pool and very lovely facilities before and after our wonderful massages. The food was very good too (and we are both foodies)! Both buffets and all the a la Carte restaurants were excellent, with such variety and great service. Everyone spoke English too which was helpful although I did pick up a fair bit of conversational Spanish! Entertainment was incredible-very talented dancers and singers, and we were surprised by the production value they put into their shows-highly recommend not skipping these! I can't say enough good things about Catalonia- for the price we paid, we were floored by the quality of everything!! Make sure you visit Tulum and Xel Ha as well- such an amazing day-long excursion! I wish i could return next week!!

    Area recommendations
Highly recommend a visit to Xel Ha- a tour provided through the hotel as well as our transportation service (Best Day). Its an all-inclusive day-long trip complete with buffet lunch, open bar, and equipment for biking, snorkeling and tubing down a natural lazy river. This place is an absolutely beautiful natural aquarium preserve where you'll see caves, grottos, dolphins, matinees and mapaches! There are also ziplines in the water and fun things like that. Before Xel Ha, the tour stopped at the Tulum Mayan ruins- a very informative tour and lovely site full of history. It is also on a beach so they give you time to stroll around on your own for photo ops and splashing in the ocean. We spent our last day in Playa Del Carmen to do some shopping for friends and family at home. There are so many things to browse its hard to choose! Only downside is every merchant calling to you in the street to visit their shop- but we just repeated "no gracias!" as we strolled. "5th Avenue" is the place to be, as there are no cars on this road and its the main shopping strip. All stores accept U.S. Dollars as well as Pesos- be careful not to use your debit/credit card too much as there is a fee you will be charged.
    Getting there
We booked airport transportation through Best Day, which was a great success. They met us outside the airport and gave us the time to meet one of their agents the following morning at our hotel to organize our return trip as well as excursions. We felt we were in good hands as they kept good record of their clients and made sure everyone and their belongings got where they needed to be. We booked our trip to Tulum and Xel Ha through Best Day as well and they were terrific. Our bus picked us up and checked us off by name, and the whole day was amazing and informative. Everyone is very helpful. I was impressed they picked us up on time for our very early 3am hotel check out!
    Getting around
Hotel Catalonia made it simple to get around! Since it is in a gated community all we had to do was ask the bell hop to phone us a cab to go to Playa Del Carmen, and one taxi from the entry to the community was up to meet us in a flash. The bell hop took our room number as well, so they could check us off when we returned. It was very comforting to have people look out for us like that, and also that our cab driver met us in town to bring us back himself as well- so we didn't have to flag down a new cab. The trip was about $40 US Dollars round trip and he let us pay at the end once we got back to the hotel. Very good experience.
    Events and shows
So much fun at Catalonia- you can tell the entertainment staff have a lot of fun with their jobs! Talented singers and dancers and the main host/MC had a great personality and really got the crowd into their performances! They sang and danced to a lot of familiar pop songs so its a fun time for all. They also put on a stellar production of the Lion King complete with impressive sets and costumes! After each show they dancers go to the discotheque and teach you steps as well as just dance and have a good time with you! I highly recommend both the theater shows as well as the discotheque!

    “Viva Catalonia!”

This hotel is awesome. The service is phenomenal. The food and drinks are neverending. Wide variety of food and it all tastes great. The groundskeepers and housekeepers never stop cleaning. Everything is spotless at all times. Beach and lagoon are gorgeous with lots of tropical fish to see. Pools and pool bars are a lot of fun. Privileged one bedroom suite is well worth the price to upgrade. Spa is beautiful and relaxing. Animation crew are the most fun and talented people I have ever met. Nightly shows were very entertaining. Community town and marina with dolphins is cool. I can't say enough good things about this place. Wish I was still there. Special thanks to Sergio, Nazario, Tasia and Alejandra. If you are planning an all-inclusive vacation, this place cannot be beat for the money spent. Go and see for yourself!

We only left the hotel to go to the local marina and town which is a must see. We didn't do any excursions. Loved the hotel so much we didn't see any reason to go anywhere else.
    Must see
The nightly performances at the theater. Entertaining from start to finish. The dolphins and manatees at the marina, 10 minute walk from hotel

    “Great for the price”

It was a pleasant stay for the price we paid. Overall, the staff was good; the drinks & food were great and the location of the hotel was also good being that we rented a vehicle. However, the resort beach was rocky and even though the night club had great music; we thought the entertainers should have been more lively or proactive to get the small crowd going....At the end, it was a nice experience and we would defenitely go back to Catalonia!
