FABULOUS resortPosted Apr 19, 2013
Pros: Graciela-server in the mornings as breakfast is important
Cons: The beds and pillows
While the RIU Yucatan is starting to show some wear, it is still a fabulous resort. The tiles on the pool are sun bleached , and yes even missing a few. I don;t want to dwell on these minor imperfections. There are a few if you are looking for perfection. I am led to believe it will be remodeled after April 2013. And that the RIU Playacar is to be razed shortly. It is just, again, fabulous. The beach! The staff! The food! They have the friendliest and most outgoing staff of any resort. I feel like I am at home. Nothing like the Barcelo' who has the most dour, sad looking, unfriendliest staff if you are not a Nationale. Our favorite staff member was our morning server- Graciela. My wifes coffee and our juice were gotten as soon as she saw us. She must have been the niciest person I have ever met. I hope the RIU reads this. The food in the buffets are actually HOT! And very delicious.. Many choices abound. The dinner buffets are every bit as good as the specialty resteraunts. The beach is very wide with plenty of loungers and shade if desired. As are the pools. Or lots of openess for sun worshippers. The greatest aspect of Playacar beaches in general-NO vendors or pedallers. The entertainment has been mostly updated to newer, fresher shows. Except for Grease. I can now say I have seen this for 10 years in different locations now. The only draw back to the rooms are the beds and pillows. You can probably not tell the difference between them and a rock.

Great pool and beach, but rooms need updatingPosted Apr 8, 2013
The towels and bedding at the hotel need to be replaced. The towels were very worn and the mattresses were very uncomfortable. The pool and the beach were the best part of this hotel.

Nice.Posted Mar 31, 2013
Pros: Good buffet, close to town
Cons: Older, no separate bathroom. One big open room.
Location: Great beach
Hotel was just as described. It is an older hotel but it is right on the beach. It was clean and well kept. Staff was very helpful. They will be updating this hotel this summer so it should be really nice after the renovations. The buffet was very good. Specialty restaurants were okay but nothing to brag about. We also ate at the Riu Tequella and that had a lot more options and different food. Would highly recommend walking across the street and checking out that buffet. Taxi ride to downtown is about $7 but is only about a 2 mile walk.

Great HotelPosted Mar 26, 2013
I had a great experience staying at this hotel. The staff was very friendly and there is always someone cleaning wherever you go. The buffet was great with a lot of choices and the food tasted very fresh. For example, they would cut up fruit and blend fruit drinks. I made reservations at the steak house and chinese food place. Steak house was great the chinese food not so much. They had absolute, captain morgan, and jose cuervo as their top shelf liquors but you have to ask for them or they pour the crappy stuff. If you order the good stuff once and give a dollar or two tip, they will keep your drinks coming all night. A dollar tip here and there goes a long way. It is right on the beach and the beach had white sand and was beautifully kept. The pool area was really nice with swim up bars. Also, as you walk around the hotel premises, you feel like you're in the jungle with little animals running around the grounds. The place is a little outdated looking but a great experience. If you want updated rooms, you'll have to pay twice as much. In this price range, you won't find better.

HoneymoonPosted Mar 15, 2013
Pros: FOOD WAS GOOD... Beach was very nice
Cons: NOT HELPFUL AT ALL... ROOM ON 3RD FLOOR NO ELEVATORS AND TOO FAR FROM POOL AND BEACH
Stayed there for our honeymoon. Asked if they could do a special honeymoon package. We got a fruit basket in our room that had an apple, orange, molded strawberry and rotten banana. VERY DISAPPOINTING. Every time we asked the hotel staff for help they were less than helpful. They did not help in picking us up from the airport. Be aware even though they state they will, they WON'T if you book thru Expedia. This hotel lacked entertainment. Basically the same type of show every night. Not sure I would stay at this hotel again. Check around.

Great place to stay on a budget.Posted Mar 5, 2013
Pros: The grounds were beautiful and clean. Landscaping was amazing. Beach was breathtaking. Overall area was clean and I felt very safe in the area.
Cons: The beds were rock hard and the king size bed was two beds pushed together making it impossible to sleep in the middle. Not enough towels in the room
Location: The overall location was fabulous. 5 min cab ride to Playa or a 25 min walk. Small area right across the street for shopping. Major shopping downtown.
We stayed at this hotel Feb 28th thru March 4th. It's about 45 min from the airport so we used the shuttle thru Expedia. Next time I think we will try using the bus system. It's a non stop bus from the airport to downtown Playa Del Carmen for $10 and then you take a taxi to your hotel. Most of the hotels in Playa are either right downtown or just a 5 min taxi ride for about $7. Once we arrived, we were immediately greeted with a delicious pineapple cocktail. Check in was quick and simple. Our room was ready when we got there about 3pm. The rooms are simply but clean. We only had a couple of issues with the room. Our tv didn't work and within 5 minutes, they had a repair man there to fix it. The king size beds are just 2 full beds pushed together. The bed had a big crack in the middle where the beds meet so essentially we ended up sleeping on a full size bed. Biggest complaint was the beds themselves. Felt like we were sleeping on the box spring instead of a mattress. Very hard and stiff. Other problem was the shower had no lip to prevent the water from seeping out of the shower. We finally had to lay bath towels down to prevent a flood of the entire bathroom. Food was average. Basic buffet food but lots of it. I'm a picky eater so I had a hard time finding a lot of things I liked but my husband enjoyed most of all the food. If you want to eat at one of the reservation restaurants, you have to get up and book by 730 or 8am to get a reservation. Grounds were beautiful.
