Pros and Cons of Staying at a Large All-InclusivePosted Jan 21, 2015
Pros: -Beautiful grounds and setting. -Eco Experience. -Beach. -Entertainment.
Cons: -Room comfort. -Food quality.
Location: -Nearby ruins: Chichen Itza, Tulum. -Snorkelling with sea turtles: Akumal. -Exploring cenotes: visited Dos Ojos. -Visiting Playa del Carmen.
After previously staying at some smaller all-inclusive resorts in Mexico, we discovered that Sandos (a much larger resort) offers some pros and cons that we will weigh when planning future trips. Pros: Many great activities included (catamarans, kayaks, snorkels, bikes, mino-golf etc.). Excellent entertainment (great nightly shows). Beautiful beach and grounds. Eco-resort experience complete with monkeys, cats, dogs, burros, iguana and coatis. Adults-only areas. Close enough to Playa del Carmen to allow for easy exploration (especially on a bike). Many friendly staff who provide excellent service. Cons: Adults-only section is a LONG way away from the beach (nearly 1 km away); shuttle is offered but there's nothing like stepping out of your room onto the beach (plus - we prefer to walk after the buffet)! Despite large selection of buffets and a la carte options, the food is adequate but not great; nothing was exceptional. We were especially disappointed with the Mexican a la carte restaurant as the food was bland and not authentic (no spice). Resort is so large that you end up spending most of your time there and missing out on some of the real Mexico nearby. Rooms were clean but not the most comfortable (our 2 double beds which were supposed to be 1 queen felt like sleeping on newspaper - my wife liked the firmness, I did not). Adults-only pool bar closes at 5 pm. Most service is excellent but occasionally it is very poor (only 2 of our 5 meals arrived at our final dinner).

Good for the $Posted Jan 5, 2015
Stayed in adults only section...great pool, but a long walk to and from the beach, bring comfy shoes (you'll be waiting for shuttles)...restaurants are all "good", but we enjoyed the Italian one the most. Service and staff very friendly. Beach is fantastic, Sandos is the last property in Playacar which makes it feel more private...took two days of kitesurfing lessons directly adjacent to the property, was a great experience, highly recommend doing here if you've ever considered trying the sport. Snorkeling was not good near the property (water cloudy). Can walk to town or take a $10 cab.

Maybe a 2 Star At Best!Posted Jan 4, 2015
Pros: Adult pool was nice is the only thing I would say positive about this property
Cons: Needs massive improvements.and don't advertise Adult Only because that's extremely limited!!!
Location: Close to 5th Avenue
First, the overall property is the oldest Sandos property...needs updating yet we were advised funds to updated where directed to Cabo property due to hurricane. Not much adult only besides pool...beach was not monitored thus had kids and other guests taking up chairs.... one restaurant for adults only and only served breakfast...shower leaked into toilet area...elevator to our floor/room was out of service ...several bulbs out in room...sliding glass door handle broken...maids would knock on the door and if you didn't respond, they would call room and hang up upon answering...the Spa has tons of tile missing around hot tub area and steam room...golf cart that was suppose to be available to take to main meeting area was only running one night...and on and on.....for the money, chose another place to stay....there is plenty that are better than this property!!!! Plus noticed several young adults that were in the eating areas with wrist bands that were tapped on....they weren't staying at the property!!!!!

Resort is nice, however food and drinks are not worth this location. Will never stay at this resort again.

good StayPosted Jan 1, 2015
Great hotel and friendly staff right of the bat. Check in was busy and long but expected. Restuarants was good for an all inclusive and pool and beach area was great. Stayed in adults only section. Far from beach but don't mind the walk and pool area was good too.

Lots to doPosted Dec 29, 2014
Pros: Lots of people, but it never felt crowded. I loved the ability to ride bikes to Playa Del Carmen which we got from the hotel.
Cons: Improve mold conditions in the rooms
Location: We took a local bus to Tulum for the day. It was cheap and easy. We don't travel much outside the US, but managed this just fine!
I loved the layout of this hotel. We enjoyed the walk from the adults-only section to the beach. The food was great. I don't eat gluten but found plenty of fresh foods to enjoy. The beach had a large stretch without any hotels nearby - great for a nice quiet stroll. We did sit through the timeshare lecture. It was over in 2 hours and we got some free massages out of the deal. Only one restaurant required reservations and it was just OK. We ate dinner in a different place for all 7 nights we were there. Rooms smelled musky and our maid picked up our towels off the floor, refolded them, and put them back on the rack which was gross. We had a large water dispenser in our room so no worries about drinking bad water. We would go back, and bring our kids too!
