Perfect Location

Posted Nov 19, 2014
I've had the pleasure of staying at The Royal in Playa three times during the past two years. While the location is perfect (being on the beach, yet right in town), the best aspect is the staff. Truly great, hard-working people. And I can say, from experience, that it is well worth the investment in comparison to less expensive resorts.

Not So Pleased With our Stay

Posted Nov 13, 2014
Pros: Location, Staff
The view from room 907 is terrible. It overlooks the lobby's air conditioners. We also had noise from the construction next door. Upon check in, we were given a room with two double beds, they weren't even queens, unacceptable, we had to switch. The food was mediocre at best. The food needs to be more simple. The drinks were of good quality. The 2 I-pod docks in our room did not work. All of the pools were unheated. I can see the large pool being unheated, but there should have been at least one heated pool option other than the hot tub. At the main pool, almost every chair is broken. When I went to the spa, they were painting it and the sauna and steam room were inoperable. The only thing you have going for you is your friendly staff.

Nice hotel, nice weather, not too crowded

Posted Nov 11, 2014
Pros: Beautiful hotel, staff very attentive, if you need something they will try and accommodate
Cons: New construction next door is very noisy, especially if you have a room next to it (to the left as you look out of the hotel lobby towards the ocean)
Location: About 1block away is the '5th Ave' shopping area, plenty of shops from high to low end. Just be prepared for locals trying to sell something to you.
Great time! 80 degree weather and lots of sun shine!

Great staff, disappointed with food

Posted Nov 9, 2014
The staff exceeded our expectations during our stay at The Royal. We were met with smiles and professional staff members when we first arrived and we experienced kindness throughout our entire stay. The room was great, although I recommend getting a room on the 2nd floor, at least. Our room was on the first floor and we could never relax with the door open, or sit on the patio without several people walking by at all hours. The room was always cleaned, we had plenty of towels, and they even offered turn down service every evening. I would say the beach was often crowded, not sure if this is generally how Playa del Carmen is though. I was hoping for a more secluded, calm beach experience. The weather was amazing so it was enjoyable either way. Both my husband and I were completely disappointed with the food experience. We were initially excited about the all inclusive package we booked, but we ended up eating at restaurants off the resort towards the end of our stay. Breakfast was great at Spice and The Mediterranean restaurant. They both offered very similar buffet menus. For lunch and dinner, we tried every restaurant on the resort except the only one that was not included, which I don't remember the name of. The food was mediocre at best. I was expecting more authentic Mexican dishes, but everything was very generic and had very little flavor. I am not a fan of tex-mex so I was thinking this would be the perfect opportunity to dine on real Mexican food.

Great vacation spot with few downfalls

Posted Nov 9, 2014
Pros: The staff at the hotel and the restaurants were great for an all-inclusive. Drinks were freely available and bars everywhere.
Cons: One of the maintenance men told me he was deported from NYC- this was not necessary to tell guests at the hotel.
Location: Walking distance to 5th Avenue
As a soft sleeper I had a hard time with them having the A/C units in the room. It was very loud - maintenance came and said it was "normal". Except for the lack of sleep in the room, everything else was excellent. I would probably not do the private driver to the hotel again, too expensive and the shared shuttle would have been just a tad longer... The staff was great and the pools / cabanas were awesome. The hot tub could have been hotter - but the scenery was fantastic. Nightly entertainment was a plus. Our room was on the first floor along an alley - could hear people and animals in the early morning.

Amazing hotel, food, service and location!

Posted Nov 8, 2014
First off, the entire staff was some of the friendliest people you will ever meet. The service was flawless both at the restaurants and front desk. My wife and I were on our honeymoon and were greeted by surprises in our room every day; from cake to decorative stuff animals and a heart on the bed. We received undivided attention at the reataurants, which also featured a lot of variety in the food offered and tasted great! The staff was also very helpful in setting us up with transportation for the day when we visited Tulum. I could go on and on but trust me in saying this is a great hotel to choose for an all inclusive!
