“A good and economical hotel option while visiting Rome.”

The hotel is one block down from Via Nationale and three blocks from the Piazza of the Republic; its location is in the downtown area of Rome. You are at a walking distance a subway station, museums, the Termini Train Station and some of the ancient churches in Rome. The rooms are comfortable and clean. The staff is always available and willing to assist. be advised that the rooms do not have air conditioning, in case you plan to visit Rome during the summer. A good and economical hotel option to stay while visiting Rome.

“Awesome value in central Rome”

Know what to expect out of Europe before you travel there for the first time. Compared to the U.S., accommodations are quite different. Bathrooms are small, shower stalls are narrow, beds can be small and uncomfortable. If you already expect these things, or have traveled to Europe and know what to expect, you will be perfectly happy at this hotel. Clarin is in a great location (10 min. walk to Colosseum), since I'm familiar navigating Roman streets I was able to locate the hotel easily (others have said it's poorly signed, but there is a black and white sign at the doorway of the building). The hotel is on the 2nd floor (3rd floor for us that count the ground floor as #1) and is only 21 rooms. The staff, all four of them, were fabulous. Do yourself and them a favor and know some Italian before you go - none of them speak fluent English, but most speak at least a little bit. Muhammad was a fabulous host, helping with breakfast every morning, would be back by the late afternoon, watched over the hotel all night, I swear he only took 4 hours off each day. He knows hardly any English, but a conversation in broken Italian was great fun. Room was made ready for us ASAP when we arrived early for check in and we could SMELL the cleanliness of our room once we got down the hall. Some rooms overlook the street, so be prepared for road noise, but in my book that's nothing to complain about. Loved our trip, were comfortable and happy, and will be back!

Area recommendations
Obviously, Rome is full of sights. Lesser known "to-do's" that I love: The Sunday market at Porta Portese in the Trastevere neighborhood - watch you bags and valuables, but you'll find awesome deals The entire Trastevere neighborhood is full of life and fun, many native Romans now live there. The closer to the train station you are, the easier it is to carry your bags from there to your hotel (Hotel Clarin was about a 10 minute walk), but the farther away to the west you go, the deeper into the heart of historic Rome you get. That will raise the hotel rates, but just find a hotel on one of the main roads that runs through town or slightly off it and you can take buses everywhere. We took a day trip to Tivoli, great fun as long as you are comfortable with putting together an adventure on the metro system! Tivoli is in the hills, so you get to see a different piece of Italy and has a beautiful villa that the tourists go to. Great local food, quiet, and fun.
Getting there
A train runs between the Fiumicino Airport and Termini Station in central Rome. If your hotel is within 1 or 1.5km of the train station, take the train to Termini and walk to the hotel. The train costs 14 euro a person, takes a half an hour (and leaves both ends of it's destination every 30 minutes) and is incredibly reliable (I've taken it 5 times now over two different European trips). If you take a taxi, that will wind up costing 40 to 50 euro MINIMUM and many of them raise their rates on innocent tourists who don't know Italian enough to talk with the drivers. So, the train will save you a significant amount of cash right off the bat.
Dining
Il Forno at Campo de Fiori - Rome is full of restaurants and bakeries called Il Forno. Go to the Campo de Fiori, face the same direction as the Bruno statue does and look to the left of the big sign that reads La Carbonara on one of the buildings. Il Forno is in the corner. AMAZING fresh oven-baked pizzas. Point at what you want, indicate how much you want, and you pay by weight. Cheap, and a perfect meal any day. (closed Sundays and for the lunch hour) Angelino ai Fori, along the main road that goes between the Emanuel monument and Colosseum, across from the Forum (cute trellises cover the outdoor eating area) was a great restaurant, packed with locals, and served great food. Just slightly more expensive than a "hole in the wall" restaurant would be, but the service was fun, fast, and delicious food was served. Great setting, and no cover charge, too!

“Clarin Hotel no frills, reasonable price.”

This hotel is a 2 star hotel. No frills, just the basics. If you aren't spending a lot of time in the hotel and luxury isn't important to you, this place would do. The room was clean and the bed was comfortable. Big bay windows. This hotel reminds me of a Motel 6. It's in the city so it is close to everything. The closest historical attraction is the Coliseum. The day shift speaks English, but the night shift does not. You need to buzz the front desk to get into the building, which is a good security aspect. it's annoying if they don't buzz you in right away. The breakfast was ok, cereal, yogurt, ham and cheese, and croissants. Great cappuccino and late'. Has internet in the lounge area for 7 euros for your entire stay.

Area recommendations
Central Rome. Close to the Spanish Steps or Trevoli Fountain.
Getting around
We only had 2 and 1/2 days, so we bought tickets for he open air tour bus. They stop at every tourist attraction. You can get off and stay off as long as you like, you can skip stops if you want. I recommend having a plan of what you want to see before you head out. Each stop has a # 1 thru 15, each stop has a description what you can see at each stop. When choosing a tour bus, choose the "red bus" they have many buses and come around frequently. We chose the "blue bus" Caio, and they came very infrequently and did not stay on schedule. A few times we had to wait at least a half hour. The tour buses all cost the same. You need 3 to 4 full days if you want to stop and "experience" all the sights. We did it in 2 ten hour days and had to skip many areas.

“Do not be fooled by the good price for its location, the hotel is not even worth that much!”

The hotel is situated on the second floor of an old building. To enter you need to take an old and small wire-cage elevator (big enough for 2 people and one bag, the elevator has 2 doors which you need to open and close manually every time upon entry and exit). Once you reach the second floor, you need to manually open the door to your right which enters the humble area of reception and breakfast room. If you come back to the hotel at a late hour or anytime during the weekend, the main door to the building will be closed and you will need to ring a bell (which might be answered by an Italian speaking gentleman (one of the 5 personnel we encountered during our 4 night stay) who might not always open the door when you say: "Hi, we are your guests." The personnel don't all speak English and those who do cannot always direct you to where it is you want to go. The breakfast is quite early in the morning (up to 9) and is very modest. At one instance the mixed fruit bowl they offered tasted funny. The room was cleaned every morning, but we found a big spider in it (this was perhaps because due to the lack of air conditioning in the hot Roman August, we had to open up the view-less window to our room). The bathroom was small and uncomfortable, with a window right behind the toilet with a translucent covering. Because of the lack of a fan in the bathroom, we needed to open the bathroom window which let in bugs, not to mention the uncomfortable feeling of being watched.

Area recommendations
Don't think that you have to stay in the Colosseum area. With 11 euros per person you can buy a 3-day Roman transportation ticket (which includes buses, the metro, and trams) and easily navigate your way around the city, since there are numerous bus stops every where. Find a decently close hotel with a reasonable rate and be careful not to be fooled by false reviews.
Getting around
Use public transport, no need to pay expensive taxi fares. There are bus stops every where around the city and you can easily find your way around the famous tourist spots with a simple map.

“Great location”

The hotel was what we expected. Small room with no view but clean, very friendly and helpful staff. Cheap room for someone looking to spend more time touring Rome than enjoying the room.

This little hotel has an excellent location, although it is rather basic in comfort. Staff were friendly. I would recommend it. You get your money's worth.

This hotel on 2-nd floor of old building. Clean small rooms, without free internet. Ordinary old hotel in the historical center of Rome.

“worst hotel in my trip”

very very bad, there is no clear sign outside that says "Clarin hotel", the outside door is a heavy dark old door, the rooms are humid and small, to get to the front desk you have to take the old elevator to the 1st floor, which apparently is very common in Rome in these old buildings. for the same rate, in other cities in Europe we have stayed in much better hotels. If you go to Rome I strongly recommend spending a little extra, and stay in a 3 star hotel with the front desk in the entrance of the building, as most normal hotels have. Also, stay away from the hotels near the Roma Termini station, the area in horrible. this was the only hotel in our trip that we were not satisfied at all.

Traveler's tip
the best dinning experience we had in Europe was in Rome, at the Tritone antica Trattoria, located in Via Dei Maroniti 1-3-5, near Fontana Di Trevi, food is incredible, the menu is very complete, service is impecable, and its not too expensive, the owner told us it is ranked nbr 6th out of 7500 restaurants in Rome
