“Not impressed; definitely not 5 stars”

Great location: within walking distances to most of the tourist locations. Excellent breakfast, food & services at restaurant. Hotel room is small & in so so condition. Hotel staff in general are not helpful. (?poor English, or just didn't want to help). I have contacts with the front desk staff, concierge staff, bell captain staff, most are either minimally helpful or minimally friendly. Strange! $5 euro tip to the bell man generated a slight smile, but he still didn't answer my question but send me back to the front desk.

“Fantastic Hotel!”

From the moment I stepped out of the taxi and was greeted by staff at the reception desk, I felt special. The room was not ready because I was ahead of check-in time but by the time I had gone to one of my favorite restaurants (Otello alla Concordia), for lunch and returned, the room was ready. I cannot say enough about the superb service by everyone. And, to top my stay off, I had a cappucino on the 6th floor of the hotel at its terrace area overlooking the city. It was dark by that time and the lights were on the monuments with a half moon in the sky. Perfect! I highly recommend this hotel.

Area recommendations
The hotel is located in the Piazza di Spagna area. It makes for a wonderful walking about and most of the main monuments are located in the ara.
When to go
I usually prefer to go in May or September. However, the weather cooperated in October and was warm during the day and cool at night.
Getting there
I took a United flight directly from Dulles (IAD) Airport. That way, I did not have to make changes which I detest. I left on a Thursday and had three seats to myself (great!). However, coming back on a Thursday, I was not so lucky. The plane was packed but the pilot made good time and I slept most of the way back to the States.
Dining
There were three places to eat that I had to go to. Note, I lived in Rome for eight years during the 60s and 70s. Go to Otello's Alla Concordia for Parma Ham and Melon, Roasted Lamb with Roasted Potatoes drizzled in olive oil and fresh rosemary, and Macedonia Salad (fresh mixed fruit with fresh whipped cream); For a snack (or a meal), Doney Cafe on the Veneto is the place. I had a lasagna and seafood salad that wonderful followed by vanilla ice cream with chocolate sauce; and, Restaurant Andrea in Via Sadegna (right off the Veneto). Parma Ham & Melon followed by Spaghetti Alla Carbonara. Being an old customer, I was also given Foccacia just out the oven - the olive oil still bubbling on the cruncy pizza bread. For dessert, homemade chocolate candies. I did not drink wine but preferred this trip around to stick to mineral water.

“A great experience ... we threw an extra coin in to Trevi Fountain ho assure we can return!”

Concierge, Nicolas and staff, and Valet, Caesaro were warm and welcoming and helpful! All staff were exceptionally polite and efficient ... our room was ready at 9:00 in the morning! With an early-arriving flight, this was so appreciated! We feel from all that we had heard that this hotel would meet our expectations for European accommodations. It exceeded them! Expedia's requested our upgrade preference, which was taken cre of for us. We also received a complimentary bottle of Champagne and congratulations on our birthdays and anniversary celebrations in Roma! Grazie!

Area recommendations
Spagna ... This neighborhood is a center city area with easy, nearby access to Metro and all surrounding areas of Rome. Piazza de Spagna is alive, vibrant, with large gatherings at the Spanish Steps, lovely Villa Borghese gardens close by ... great shopping, dining, coffee and wine bars, reasonable and higher-end dining, beautiful churches, museums, historical sites at one's feet. Great place to stroll and savor Roma! The neighborhood is feels safe and there is always police presence, therefore helping a visitor feel non-threatened by street gypsies selling unfavorable ware, etc,
When to go
October was a perfect --sunny all week, with rain showers once. Rome film festival made for great people-watching! Trevi Fountain is a shsort stroll from Piazza de Spagna, Villa Borghese gardens (for long, quiet walks or kid-friendly time) within blocks, Pizza del Popola and Piazza Navona/Fountain of Four Rivers and Pantheon are within walking distance. The Colesseum, Roman Forum and Palotine Hill are a 45 minute stroll. All are must-sees, as is Vatican City. Open-air cafes, coffee and wine bars, restaurants, fine dining are plentiful. Food and wines are wonderful! Coffee is strong and warm and ice water isn't brought to your table; you can ask for still or sparkling water. Window shopping along Via Conditi ... :-) Gucci, Prada, etc. Comfortable shoes (and quick reflexes on the narrow streets with taxis, small cars or scooters darting by!) are a must! Most streets are narrow and cobble-stoned. Getting around Rome is easy -- many busses and efficient Metro services., Cabs are expensive -- but reasonable city transportation services (especially reasonable when used with Roma passes for museum and historical sites tickets). What to pack -- tissues and carry them with you. Restrooms are generally on the level of a "porta-pot.' :-( Toilet paper and toilet maintenance isn't the best, especially if you're at a wine-bar or open-air cafeteria/restaurant. Pack basics ... light jacket or sweater for evening. If you're visiting the Vatican, check dress-code,

“Old Rome”

Loacted at the top of Spanish steps, the location is great. There is a Metro station a block away, and Taxis are easily availalable if needed. Despite being in the city, it is very quiet. Shopping and restaurants are nearby. The rooms are on the small side but this is usual for an older city hotel. The internet access as of Oct, 2011 was 23 euros per day and you have to call the desk every 24-48 hours to get a new code for access.

“Great location, would go back”

We were pleased with our experience. We arrived around 11am, well before the checkin time. They checked to see if our room was ready, but it wasn't. The friendly front desk staff offered us a room to use while our room was being prepared so that we could relax. We declined as we wanted to grab a bite to eat, but appreciated the offer. Our room was ultimately ready before the normal checkin time which was nice. Our room was very clean and roomy (we got a deluxe with a small balcony overlooking the interior courtyard). Internet was available for a fee but they had a special where you could order the internet and have access to all movies for one price. We ordered that one night and watched movies when we rested in our room. Nice offer, we think. The elevators were very small, but it wasn't a big deal for us and the bell hops brought our luggage up and down for us. We never ate at the hotel as we were out and about most of the trip and there were many great, inexpensive restaurants nearby. The hotel is in a great location, right at the top of the Spanish Steps and in walking distance of many restaurants and sites such as the Pantheon and Trevi Fountain. A metro station location is right at the bottom of the Steps (there is an elevator which we found our last day) which is a cheap and easy way to get to nearby sites like Vatican City & the Colosseum. A taxi stand is also nearby. Overall we enjoyed our stay and the service. We would stay again.

Area recommendations
Pantheon and surrounding area - oldest still used Roman building & Raphael's tomb is there; great shopping for souvenirs; Miscellanea restaurant has great strawberry wine Colosseum & Roman Forum area - a must; St. Peter-in-Chains church is nearby - see St. Peter's chains he wore while imprisoned and the famous Moses statue by Michelangelo - both impressive in person and it's free! Vatican City (could be a 2 day event - so much to see; try to Scavi tour under the Basilica which you have to book well ahead of time; Pope assembly on Wednesdays; Vatican museum is incredible) Capuchin Crypt - in walking distance; unlike anything you've seen EVER

“Great Location”

Beware the "private car" from the Central Station or airport get a certified taxi (w/ meter). The hotel staff was welcoming. We recommend the Lobby Bar for great drinks and small bites. The location is fantastic. Steps from the Spanish Steps and an easy stroll to most of the central attractions of Roma. Not many great restaurants within walking distance...as expected, a touristy neighborhood.

“Good location but too expensive for the quality of service”

The location is perfect, I really enjoyed it, but you don't feel on a five star hotel (besides the price). Service is ok but not great, room service is extremely expensive, which at the end forces you to look for local alternatives which are great and close. For the price, you will find much better options. I would recommend it only with lower rates.

Getting there
From Da Vinci Airport, the Leonard Express train will take you straight to the station Termini. At this station look for the subway to get to the Piazza Spagna (Spain Square) which will take you right to the Spanish steps, which take you to the hotel. Don't pay the very expensive taxi from the airport (about 50 euros), instead the train is 11 euros and the metro another 2 euros.

“Comfortable accomodations”

Enjoyed staying at the Intercontinental. Hotel was close to many of the attractions and restaurants. Our room, though small, was comfortable. The bathroom was quite spacious and very nice. The air conditioning was controlled in room, so we were comfortable in the August heat. I would definitely stay in this hotel again.

“Great hotel, even better location”

Beautiful hotel. Had a wonderful stay here. Could not have asked for a better location (top of Spanish Steps and close to everything). Room was nicely appointed. Bathroom was a little small and room could have been cleaner. Although, husband didn't agree - thought room was cleaned fine. Hotel staff and Concierge so pleasant and helpful. Absolutely loved it and hope to go back!

Spanish Steps - Trevi Fountain, Rome, Italy: Rome’s largest, most spectacular fountain, the Trevi Fountain is a baroque extravaganza, its ancient sea gods and gushing water dominating a tiny piazza. Immortalised in Fellini’s film, ‘La Dolce Vita’, this is the place to toss your coins to ensure your return to the Eternal City. The three streets radiating from the piazza lead to the historical centre and sights of the Quirinale – one of the original seven hills.
