Friendly Hotel set in pleasant countryside.Posted Sep 25, 2013
Pros: We enjoyed our stay. The staff were very friendly, helpful and our room was spacious, comfortable, well equipped, and the food was good.
Cons: Lighting in our room was a bit on the dim side for reading or writing.
Location: Barnsdale Gardens 1 mile, well worth a visit. Rutland Water nearby. Oakham and Rutland County Museum are interesting. Stamford and Burghley House.
This hotel was originally a farm and we chose it because an ancestor of mine worked for most of his life on this farm during the 1800s. The original buildings have been converted very sympathetically and the more recent extensions have been successfully designed to blend in. The hotel manager kindly gave me a tour and pointed out original features of the farm. Our bedroom was in a converted barn where my ancestor would almost certainly have done some of his work. From here we were able to visit the village where he lived and the church where he was buried.

Lovely courtyard gardenPosted Aug 28, 2013 on Hotels.com
The hotel bedrooms are very dated in parts, the room I stayed in was small, it was to small for 2 bedside tables. The ensuite was basic but functional it had a damp fusty smell. The restaurant was excellent with delicious food . The service at breakfast was terrible. The courtyard garden is tranquil and pretty

The best in the Oakham areaPosted Aug 17, 2013 on Hotels.com
I have stayed in most of the hotels and inns around Oakham over the past year while working in the town. Barnsdale Lodge is the best of them, the rooms are comfortable with some nice features and the meals very good.

OK EXCEPTPosted Jul 20, 2013
Pros: The food was lovely
Cons: The bed
Location: Lovely location
I consider a night's sleep in a comfortable bed most important and unfortunately the hotel did not provide this. There was a very old, lumpy mattress on the bed. Also a light in the ceiling over the bath was hanging down and, in my opinion considering the closeness of the shower, dangerous. Everything else was fine but the above meant I could not give this hotel a satisfactory rating.
