Not excellent because of noise

Posted Apr 20, 2015
Pros: Unique room, pet friendly
Cons: Noise level
The room was definitely the high point - not your average bland hotel room - and they are pet friendly without additional charge. But they really need more soundproofing for the hall noise. From my room on the 4th floor I could still hear the party on the 5th, and every person who came down the stairs, and even the elevator bell. The Grange provided an excellent room service dinner.

Wonderful Hotel - Close to Convention Center

Posted Apr 20, 2015
I thoroughly enjoyed my stay at The Citizen Hotel and would stay there again. The room was stately, the staff courteous and helpful, the bed comfortable, and the atmosphere was relaxing. The location was a convenient 3 block walk to the convention center and the restaurant food was superb. The only thing lacking was a microwave oven in the room for heating water for my morning tea.

Design hotel for government travelers

Posted Mar 25, 2015
Pros: Excellent restaurant, Grange, in the hotel. This was a highlight. Hotel design has character; more interesting than standard corporate chain decor.
Cons: Get rid of the Internet access charge - this is 2015! Change/upgrade TV handsets.
I'm generally a fan of Joie de Vie hotels but encountered a few disappointments during my stay in Sacramento. Issues included: 1) separate charge for Internet access; 2) ripped pillow case; 3) TV remote that was difficult to use, perhaps a dying battery or just a lousy handset. The separate charge for Internet access ($10/day) was the biggest hassle. No idea why JDV is assessing a separate charge when comparable hotels in the area (i.e. Hyatt and Marriott) include wifi in standard room cost.

Lovely

Love the building and history. Very comfortable. Great staff. Nice view of the capital lit up at night. Scetchy area at night though. But most are. Probably number 2 on our list of hotels we have stayed at in Sacto.

Although the short walk from the train station to the hotel was not the most pleasant, the hotel was beautiful, clean and very welcoming. Love the old time, old town Sacramento feel.

Boutique get-away . . . nice bar.

Posted Mar 16, 2015
Pros: Everything
Location: Right in the heart of downtown and walking distance to a lot of activities.
The entire staff were very friendly and informative. Our room was clean. There was some street noise because we were on the 3rd floor on the East side and that faces the bars. However, we were notified of this prior to checking in and chose to take the room because it meant we could check in early. It was nice to be fully informed. The entire hotel is charming and unique and I will definitely be back. The bar is great and the cocktails were amazing!

Confirmed Reservation Meant Nothing!

Posted Mar 13, 2015
I will never stay at this hotel again. Maybe the issue was Expedia, maybe it was The Citizen, but that's not the point. I had a confirmed, prepaid reservation for one night. When I arrived at 10:30pm to check in, I was told that the hotel was "oversold" and they would have to put me up at a different hotel -- The Red Lion Inn. Oversold? Seriously? And sending me to The Red Lion Inn -- a hotel/motel/casino disaster that is miles away from downtown Sacramento and barely a two star hotel. That was the only option they had for me. What a nightmare. I'm still trying to figure out if my account has been credited for the difference in price (about $100) between The Citizen and the RLI. Never again. I will stay at the Hyatt or Sheraton from now on.
