Another idea is to make your way over to Poligny. It's roughly 11 miles (18 kilometers) from Salins-les-Bains and is home to the Poligny Church of St-Hippolyte and Maison du Comte.
Approximately 20 miles (32 kilometers) to the north of Salins-les-Bains is Besancon, a regional center which is home to Palais Granvelle, Place du 8 Septembre and Musee des Beaux-Arts. Besancon Citadel, University of Franche-Comte and Besancon Cathedral are just a sample of the other points of interest here that should be included on every traveler's list.
To get a real sense of a region, you need to peer back through the mists of time. Franche-Comte's colorful fortresses are a great place to start. If you need to escape the elements, it's hard to go past Franche-Comte's art museums and history museums. These are good places to learn a little about the region's culture and find a unique gift or two.
If you are happy to get out into the cold, this area may be an excellent holiday destination. Do as the locals do and go snow shoeing and skiing.
At the finish of your break, gather your luggage and bid Salins-les-Bains "Au revoir / À bientôt" (farewell).
