Historic hotel shows its age.

Posted Aug 18, 2014
Pros: Its location and history.
Cons: Clean the carpets.
Location: Alamo, Tower of the Americas, Riverwalk, etc.
Although the rooms were generally clean, the halls smelled of stale tobacco smoke.

great location and staff

Posted Aug 18, 2014
Pros: great location and staff (especially at reception). Fantastic Sunday brunch with eggs benedict, mimosa and all the frills.
Cons: the parking garage is chaotic
Location: The Alamo is across you room and you are in the heart of the historic district. For an oustanding meal try Le Frite Belgian Bistro on S Alamo Street.
Great location and helpful staff. Enjoyed our stay.

Menger - no ghosts this stay

Posted Aug 14, 2014
Pros: the history and tales of ghosts made it fun
Location: Riverwalk, Alamo and crummy mall next to it
Great location, a bit over priced, but everything in that location is.

Beautiful hotel near the Alamo

Posted Aug 11, 2014
Everything was great as far as the hotel was concerned. The only thing I have to complain about is the charge for the valet parking per day is very expensive and was not told about up front when booking reservation, so it came as a shock! Staff was wonderful and the room was comfortable. Would be nice to have a mini fridge and microwave in the rooms.

Beautiful, charming, old hotel

Posted Aug 10, 2014
Pros: The architecture is gorgeous. Very nice garden, furnishings. Staff very polite, friendly, helpful. Yummy mango icecream!
Cons: Water pressure in shower was very low, and water temp very inconsistent.
Location: Great location, right next to Alamo, Riverwalk, river center mall.
The building is gorgeous & filled with history. The staff were lovely, friendly, and efficient. The only problem I experienced was an allergic reaction to something in the hotel, which irritated my eyes and kept me from getting good rest.

Beautiful Historic Hotel

Posted Aug 8, 2014
Pros: Beautiful furnishings, great team
Cons: Bathrooms in old section
Location: Right next to the Alamo, good shopping - consider going two blocks down to Buckhorn Saloon. Fun for adults and children.
The Menger Hotel was a terrific surprise - good price for an opportunity to stay in an historic hotel. History everywhere you look - captured in photographs, antique furniture and anecdotes. If you are a fan anti-bellum through 1920's art deco, you will love the hotel. I would have rated my stay much higher, but the bathroom shower was very poor, and truly lowered the quality of stay. There was very little water pressure, and the water temperature fluctuated from very hot to cold through the shower, no matter how I attempted to master the controls. If you stay in the old part of the hotel, it's great (and allegedly haunted) but you better be prepared for the shower. I assume the newer rooms are very likely better equipped.

Not the Quality You Expect!

Posted Aug 6, 2014
Pros: The history and d├ęcor
Cons: NEW STAFF or completed retrained.
Location: Alamo, Rivercenter Mall, Alamo Plaza, Ripley's, Riverwalk all just steps away.
Beds were like rocks both my husband and I were in pain and couldn't sleep because of it. The staff was completely unprofessional. Valet left our car unattended and unlocked with the windows down, the bartender never washed his hands! The bar was filthy and trash overflowed onto the ground. Granted it is an old hotel that is in renovations but I have had better experiences at a Motel 6 than here. For over a 100 dollars a night I expect to be treated with respect and courtesy. The room was not cleaned or properly prepped when we arrived. No extra toilet paper, no trash can liner in one can, the sheets were stained, the duvets were bunched up inside from being improperly cleaned. It wasn't the worst experience ever but I definitely wanted to stay out of the room more than in it. The only 2 employees that were great was the woman at the front desk and the maintenance man. Beware of thin walls too, I heard all the street traffic and pedestrians conversations and everything in the 2 rooms around us.
