Pros: Cleanliness and location!
Location: Petco Park, Gaslamp, Little Italy
Very clean room, bathroom and the common areas. Breakfast was very good. Close enough to walk to Little Italy and Gaslamp. Good for families with kids. Parking is extra.

Need a hotel before or after your cruise ?

Posted Apr 16, 2014
The Best Western Plus - 555 W Ash Street San Diego is the perfect hotel before or after a cruise, for both location and affordabilit. It was only a ~$7 cab fare from the port to the hotel. It is also a 10 min (easy) walk to a large shopping centre and the hotel room rate included a free buffet breakfast, free wifi and a free shuttle to the airport. Room was large and clean (two double beds), was quiet and the shower hot and strong. Compared to other hotel rates, this was great value for money. Would not hesitate to stay at this hotel again in the future.

Pros: Staff were amazing!

Stayed here to compete in a half ironman starting at the harbour. Great access to downtown also. Staff were very accommodating for special requests.

Convenient location with friendly staff!

Posted Apr 7, 2014
Pros: The staff were very friendly and accomodating. Service was excellent!
Cons: Thicker drapes or some kind of sound barrier for the lower floors.
Location: Convenient to all attractions, shopping and dining...lots within walking distance, some by short driving distance.
We were originally given a room on the third floor, but had an awful time sleeping as the noise outside was loud and unbearable: the city trucks sweep the streets in the early hours of the morning. Fortunately, the wonderful front desk staff were helpful and offered us a room on a higher floor...outside noise issue obsolete! (: Unfortunately, we were placed in a room on the same floor as a group of party-going men who liked to slam their doors multiple times and create a ruckus at 2 in the morning! We were grateful that somebody on the floor complained before we could, as a security guard spoke with the unruly guests and remained there until they finally behaved. Kudos to the staff of this hotel! The breakfast offered was good. Plenty of variety to choose from...even rice! Location was key for us: just a 5 minute walk from the Amtrak station. Quick 10 minute ride to the airport. Less than half an hour by car to get to most attractions and shopping. About a 10 minute walk to Gaslamp district.

Nice location, but disappointed with service.

While staff were pleasant, and room was ok, the toilet paper and tissue were so cheap that they roughed us up. Coffee and cups were sometimes supplied and other times not. Washcloths were sometimes appropriately stocked and other times not. The shampoo was cheap and barely produced a lather, and felt like it stripped our hair. The bottles were so tiny, it was insufficient for two people. Breakfast was boring, and tasteless it was the same choices every day, with the exception of one morning when cold pancakes were added to the options. The pool was tiny and tucked into an outdoor alcove between the buildings, and therefore barely had any sun exposure. We never felt drawn to use it. We could have stayed at another location for only a little bit more. The quality of our seven day stay was negatively affected by these factors. During our next stay in San Diego, will definitely pay another 8-15 bucks a day to have better supplies and service at another hotel.

A Pleasant Surprise

Posted Mar 31, 2014
With my train arriving after midnight, I checked in ~1:30 am. Guy manning the desk was neutral in demeanor, a sleepy security guard sat at a table in the lobby listening to loud right-wing talk radio, and the open door to the office showed a lot of clutter. When I reached my room, I found it was immediately adjacent to the elevator. And there was a problem with the bathroom sink. All of this had me worried that the week-long biz-trip stay would be unpleasant, but I was too worn out to make an issue of anything. I woke to a brand new day, and the rest of the week was just fine! The elevator was so quiet I never even heard it. The room-service on those nights I had to stay in and work late was incredibly fast, reasonably priced, quite tasty, and such large proportions that I couldn't finish. Free breakfasts were surprisingly good (e.g., no powdered eggs to be seen and excellent tea choices for a change). And the hotel seems to be positively obsessed with cleanliness, which is really the most important thing. It could get a little loud out my window in the evening (looking out over the pool, and maybe there's a bar somewhere nearby where people get drunk and rowdy) but things always quieted down before midnight, so I could sleep. Location is convenient -- just a block from San Diego's main train station, by which I'd arrived and where you can pick up trollies to get around. Overall, a good deal for the money compared to the outrageous rates not too many blocks away

Excellent value in a great location

Posted Mar 30, 2014
Pros: Cleanliness; balcony; friendly staff; convenient location
Location: This hotel is located in Little Italy, just north of the Gas Lamp district and downtown. I walked downtown several times during my stay.
I picked this hotel because it was reasonably priced, it was in my desired location, and it had a balcony. The staff members were accommodating and friendly, and the room was a decent size and clean. I would stay here again.

A Nice Quiet Location In Downtown San Diego

Posted Mar 26, 2014
Pros: The hotel was neat and clean and the personnel was courteous.
Cons: They could use a Bellhop. We had to use the dolly take our luggage to our room. And 24 hour shuttle service. No service before 7AM.
Location: This hotel is located in a quiet block in downtown San Diego. Plenty of restaurants in nearby Little Italy. An Old Town Trolley stop is nearby.
This was our first time visiting San Diego. We wanted a nice quiet place that was centrally located to the transportation systems of the city so that we would be able to get around to see the sights with ease. We found it. The Old Town Trolley is just a few blocks away in the Little Italy Quarter. The MTS system is also nearby. Plenty of places to eat, plenty of things to see. We enjoyed our stay.
