Nice Hotel

Posted Jul 16, 2014
Bed very comfortable and very quiet rooms, hotel needs some updates, only complaint was the room was not as clean as I thought, found a old sock and food on the floor at the foot of the bed. This tells the floor wasn't completely cleaned.

Great location

Posted Jun 28, 2014
Pros: location, friendliness, clean, small, quaint
Location: beach, shopping, restaurants
Perfect location, walking distance to tons of restaurants, shopping and the beach. The staff was very nice, the room had plenty of room for our family of four and even had a slight view of the ocean! We found the beds very comfortable. The room had both a fridge and a microwave. Waffles, cereal, muffins, fruit and bagels was nice to have included every morning. And my kids loved the cookies at the front desk in the afternoons! It doesn't have a pool, which is fine because you will be at the beach! The only thing that could have made it nicer was if there were blaconies to hang out our wet towels! I would stay there again.

Beautifully Maintained Older Historic Building

Posted Jun 25, 2014
Pros: It's vintage beauty!
Cons: I noticed wall paper pealing in places; the closet door tracks need to be replaced; chair coverings and lamp shapes were stained.
Location: The hotel is in La Jolla. That, in and of itself, is all the needs to be said about that; a monied town full of shops and restaraunts.
We found the Empress Hotel to be beautifully restored and maintained for a building of its history and age. Mahogany woodwork and vintage furnishings kept as if new. Pleasing dark colors and comfort. The staff was available at all times to accommodate our needs. The valets were extremely courteous and friendly. I found the shower in our room to be just fantastic! No need to worry about having to step over a tub edge; it was HUGE! Because there was a large wedding party staying there at the time of our stay, and the restaurant - The Manhattan - was so busy, we ordered room service one night. The food arrived surprisingly quickly and was absolutely delicious! We would stay there again.

Dear Becky, Thank you for taking the time out of your day to provide us with feedback regarding your recent stay. It looks like there were some areas of your stay that fell short of your expectations and I would like to apologize for the issues you encountered. On a brighter note, I am pleased to read that you found our staff to be very friendly and helpful and that you enjoyed the quick and delicious room service from our Manhattan Restaurant. I am pleased to inform you that we are undergoing a major renovation and are replacing all of the wall paper and furniture in the rooms and public areas. Mid-town La Jolla

Posted Jun 1, 2014
Pros: Decent location, fair value.
Cons: Finish the updates more.
A nice hotel value, but the hotel was just okay. Tired hallways and rooms with a face-lift. The lobby and restaurant appeared nice, but the hallways and rooms had cosmetic updates, but the rest still felt old. The room bathrooms were nicely updated, but weird sliding doors and mid-grade furnishings made it feel half-done. Our room had a distant ocean view, if you didn't mind looking past the parking lot, air conditioning units, and dumpsters. Valet parking by the staff was easy at an additional $18 per night, which really isn't too bad for La Jolla. Simple 2-3 block walk to the downtown area was a good location. Breakfast was typical continental, but nothing special.

Nice Boutique Hotel

I prefer this type of hotel with comfy bed and a touch of class. Reminds me of pensions in Italy. Pet friendly, close to everything you need. Good Italian restarant w/entertainment and room service. We had a car and used valet, but great walking town.

average hotel but fair price for location

second time at the empress and ambivalent about returning. .. finally got my room request met after a hassle... was told requests are just requests but i made this reservation a couple months previous... bench by bed was extremely stained and a chair badly repaired. .. otherwise, bed was ok, very good location. .. I'm fairly local and will look around at other options. ..
