“I would go back if the bed wasn't so hard.”
The room was nice, but the bed was too hard for me. I have a bad back and hard beds just don't cut it. Staff is very nice. Food a little pricy, but there are plenty of places to eat in the area. They serve coffee in the morning in the lobby, which is nice because I love that first cup on the morning. They have wine in the evening, but I am not a wine drinker.
“Outstanding visit, too bad about the expensive parking”
The $37 a night parking was frustrating, but other than that, our trip here was very nice. The staff recommended two excellent restaurants for breakfast and even gave us tips to get seated immediately at Searsucker (a hot new restaurant a few blocks away), even though there were no dinner reservations available. Later that night when we thanked the front desk attendant for the help with the reservation, she gave us cards for comped drinks at the hotel's rooftop bar. They do complimentary wine service in the lobby every night, which was a nice touch. That said, they need to train their staff a little bit better for this function. On Friday night, a very earnest young guy who seemed like he was staffed on the wine service at the last moment told me he was pouring -- and I'm not kidding here -- "Indicazione Geografica Tipica." Overall, a great option when staying in San Diego. Made me look good to my girlfriend for picking it, so if we're back in town, we're likely to stay here.
“Loud club across the street!!!”
If your not on the pool side of the hotel do not stay on a Friday or Saturday night! The Bar Bub's is very loud and obnoxious. Don't get me wrong I'll get my drink on but the people coming out of there must be new to it. Yelling, screaming, vomiting etc... until nearly daylight.
“Location, Location, Location!”
Hotel Solamar’s location is fantastic. We spent most of our time in the Gas Lamp area. We never had to get a taxi or Pedi cab due to its location. Very classy, clean and comfortable! When I checked in the lobby attendant went out of his way to provide information on a subject I was asking about. I will absolutely stay here again. My wife and I had a blast! The parking fee of $36 was the only unpleasant part of my stay but I knew that when I booked and parking is expensive almost anywhere downtown so whatever!
“Great Place To Stay”
Awesome hotel! Super comfy king size bed and huge spa tub! Great room for a great price! Right in the heart of the gaslamp district. Petco Park is basically right around the corner. So many great bars and restaurants within walking distance. Looking forward to staying there again real soon.
“Hotel Solamar in the rain”
Great service, beautiful room, and nice people. No jacuzzi was a let down. Such a modern, trendy hotel should have an I-Pod dock in the room.
“Hotel Solamar gets an A+”
We had a wonderful stay at a reasonable price too. Great Staff from the bell men to the reception staff. Our stay started upon our arrival with wine and goodies in a comfortable living room space complete with fireplace. It was a November stay and the fire was lit. We stayed at the Solamar on both sides of a Mexico Cruise, and I was happy to return to the hotel upon our arrival back to San Diego, and appreciated it close proximity to the Piers. I look forward to visiting San Diego and seeing a Padres/Giants game next season and will gladly book with the Solamar again. The room was well appointed with modern decor and a large flat panel TV. The room was very clean and the mattress was super comfortable, I am even looking into purchasing the same one for home. The Bell staff was very accommodating after check-out. We were able to have them hold our luggage so we could explore the Gas Light District for the afternoon before our late flight departure. Also the Solamar was a very short ride to the airport, just far enough away without the distractions of jet noise..
“Best Hotel Service”
The Hotel is in a perfect location. The front desk/concerige were AMAZING! They recommended great local spots, re-heated our left overs at 3 am, and een extended our checkout to the mid afternoon! I spend a lot of time travelling and I will always consider Kimpton hotels!
“We had a great experience here and would love to stay here again!”
This hotel deserves the 5 stars. It is a very beautiful boutique hotel in the center of the Gaslamp district. The concierge was amazing. My boyfriend and I didn't check in until about 7pm and check in is usually at 3pm. They offer a wine hour from 5-6pm and since we missed it the host offered us 3 complementary drink tickets to be used at the open air lounge or the restaurant. The reason he gave us 3 is because our friend dropped us off at the hotel and had offered her one as well! A++!!! They have awesome service. I would recommend staying at this hotel to anyone who is visiting or a native to San Diego. OH and if youre afraid that it's loud in the evening it definitely is NOT! They have amazing windows that block out the sound and theyre even pet friendly :)
“Will consider going back”
The Hotel Solamar was very nice. It is located in the heart of the Gaslamp District and many restaurants are within walking distance. The restaurant located in the hotel was not as impressive as the reviews. My husband ordered the short ribs and they were tough as leather. The other entree ordered (scallops) was very tasty however, I don't think $30 for 3 scallops was justified. There are many other restaurants in the area that are far better and not as expensive. The pool area was very pleasant during the day. There were a few corporate events in the hotel and on one occaision, when we went to lounge and swim, there was some type of entertaining near the bar area. Room was very comfortable and clean - the bathrooms do not have fans and gets steamier than normal after showering. My husband is allergic to down feathers and as soon as we asked that the pillows and duvet be changed, they changed the bedding straight away! We will consider going back.
