Not for over 30

Much younger crowd especially around the pool. The staff was courteous, though housekeeping was spotty. We needed to request the ice bucket be emptied, leave clean glasses, etc. Won't return. Just not worth the price.

Sum pluses and minuses

Having a room next to the rooftop bar is not recommended if you want an early night!!

Meh...checked out early...

Posted Jun 22, 2014
Pros: close to ballpark.
Cons: see above
The room was just "alright". Not bad but not really that "fresh" and kind of small. Also, when we received a call from the front desk about our dog barking, we tried to find out when it had happened and for how long and they would not answer the question. They hung up before we even told them we'd leave the ball game immediately to come back and check on our dogs (who were not barking when we arrived at our room). Lots of very loud late arriving guests (from "amateur nights" in Gaslamp District. Also, very "nickel and dime" with charges; $41/night valet parking, charged for WiFi (in 2014?!?!) and a $6 "service charge" on room service orders? And room service did not even start until 7AM! No coffee pot in room. We checked out early and spent the second night of our stay at the new Residence Inn just kitty corner from here. To be fair, they did allow our refund of our second night room charges (through Expedia).

Marathon Downer

Posted Jun 9, 2014
Pros: Their customer service by their management.
Cons: I don't care won't ever be considered by me.
Location: Location is in the gas light district close to everything including better hotels.
I booked my stay for 3 nights well in advance of the SD marathon June 1st. My mistake was choosing a hotel from the Expedia unpublished list. Never do that again. I read all the disclosures and once you book there is no changes allowed. No problem so I thought. My plans changed I could not check in the first night I figured since my reservations were for 3 nights pre-paid and confirmed so when I showed up for the 2nd night - NO ROOM for me!! I was schooled in no uncertain terms that since I did not check in for the first night they let my room go and I needed to pay prevailing rates if I wanted a room. The manager was rude and no help at all. Fortunately Expedia stepped up on my behalf and they were able to obtain a refund for the 2 nights remaining which I quickly used to book a suite at the Hard Rock. So, this hotel Solamar is off my list-not very friendly to distressed visitors.

Overnight parking fee was excessive - $41 night

Posted Jun 8, 2014
Great hotel however I was displeased that Expedia did not disclose the overnight parking fee. You indicated there are fees. Typically they might be $15, etc. but this hotel charged $41. Knowing that I would not have selected it. I couldn't call the hotel ahead of time because I chose the option where you assigned the hotel after I made payment. Very unfair. you need to include the resort/parking fees in your pricing.

Staff was super-friendly. Great location in Gaslamp if that's what you're looking for. Cool, clean modern vibe that we're into. Made us interested in keeping Kimpton in mind when we look for hotels in the future.

Great hotel with very friendly staff

We stayed at Hotel Solamar for part of our honeymoon and really enjoyed our time there. The staff were extremely friendly and offered helpful information about the area. The rooms are modern and very tidy. The hotel is also located in the middle of the Gaslamp Quarter with heaps of restaurants and bars at your door step. They also offer a complimentary wine and beer hour in the lobby each evening which was a nice way to start the night.
