Great part of town to stay in, and you can't beat the complimentary wine happy hour

Great locations but lacks cleanlinessPosted Apr 14, 2014
Pros: Location, Common Areas, Staff
Cons: CLEANLINESS, SINK DESIGN
Location: The location is the most attractive part of the hotel. Near Petco Park and Gaslamp so tons of dining and going out places!
We were granted an early check in on Thursday 10-April and were pleased with the quaint and cozy lobby along with the very nice lady at check in. We basically dropped of our stuff and went to have brunch. Once we got back and settled in later that evening we started to notice the lack of cleanliness in the room. There was dust EVERYWHERE! The phones were covered in dust along with the lamps, remote, alarm clock, and even the ceiling. Also, we weren't to pleased with the cleanliness of the bathroom. The sink is terribly designed and splashes water everywhere!!! There were hard water stains on the faucet itself and green stains on the handle as well. Also it looked like a few spots of mildew in the shower, especially under the soap dispensers. Which if they only have soap dispensers instead of bar soap, they should have loofahs. The robes looked very questionable and one of the "fresh" towels on our 2nd night had a stain. The layout and size of the room were fine, along with the service and hotel common areas.

Lovely but NOISYPosted Apr 13, 2014
Pros: They serve wine and beer for free in the lobby from 5 to 6 p.m. ... that was nice. Also, the staff was very accommodating.
Cons: It would probably be nice to know that you MUST valet park and it's a $41 fee per night.
This is a nice hotel in a great location ... which comes with a downside. Mainly, NOISE until 2 a.m. If you're staying in the Gaslamp District to stay out until all hours and party, this is a great location. If you actually want to go to bed at a decent hour ... you'll want to stay elsewhere. I was on the sixth floor, and the noise-level from the street was still horrible. The valet parking at $41 / night seemed rather expensive to me. They see themselves as a hotel that encourages socializing - while that means free wine / beer at happy hour in the lobby, it also means no coffee makers in the room. But free coffee in the lobby. Personally, I'd rather not have to get dressed and go anywhere for coffee. The restaurant downstairs is lovely, but was remarkably empty. If you're looking for a hotel with a lively bar onsite, this isn't it. Then again, you can join the party only a few blocks away at the bars in the Gaslamp District.

Excellent weekend getaway at SolamarPosted Apr 2, 2014
Pros: The decor, the fun atmosphere, cleanliness, J-six restaurant, the friendly staff.
Cons: the bathroom was too small for 2 people to use at once, and the bathroom lighting was pretty poor. Its not ideal for make-up or hair styling.
Location: Love the food at the Blind Burro, just across the street.
After becoming recently engaged, my fiance and I decided to get away for a weekend to celebrate, and we booked Hotel Solamar on a whim. The reception staff congratulated us and sent us a complimentary bottle of sparkling wine to celebrate. The location is central to everything. I loved the stylish room decor and the funky robes. Our room was neat and tidy, and well appointed. Note that the Standard rooms do not offer a luggage rack or a large clothing dresser (just 2 bedside dressers). We really enjoyed the complimentary wine hour, and the newly renovated on site restaurant was a stand-out experience for us. The staff at J-six have created some truly unique cocktails, and have an extensive offering of bourbon. We really enjoyed chatting with the bartenders. And the food was equally creative, not the type of place I would recommend to a meat and potatoes lover though. Overall, I would recommend both the hotel and restaurant to anyone visiting San Diego.

Close to convention centrePosted Mar 21, 2014
Pros: Location, friendly/helpful staff, a unique feel to hotel - not institutional like some big chains. Loved the photo booth but never got the pics.
Cons: Very noisy guests wandering the floor at all hours of the night/morning.
Location: Very convenient that everything is within walking distance.
A nice 7 minute walk to the convention centre and close to shops and restaurants. Very convenient.

I enjoyed my stay at the Solamar. Large room, relatively quiet, good restaurant. My minor critiques were: 1. i like bars of soap and shampoo etc to bring home (they dont have this, just large things in shower) 2. no blankets on bed, just sheets. I had to ask housekeeping day 2 for these. often they can be put in closet if its summer/warmer 3. breakfast opens at 7am, for our conference this started at 7am some days 4. only one treadmill in gym. We had rain but otherwise lovely pool area, facility and place to stay.

Good Hotel in Gaslamp DistrictPosted Mar 2, 2014
Pros: Location. Comfort level and excellent staff.
Cons: Hotel restaurant food needs some improvement.
Location: Recommmend boat trip around harbour to see all the US navy vessels and the ferry across to Coronado. A short cab ride to zoo and museums in Balboa par
Excellent location near to many good restaurants and bars. However, many of these restaurants need to be pre-booked as the area gets very crowded at night. This is because of the nearby huge convention centre which is constantly in use and very busy. The hotel has a small swimming pool on 4th floor with bar and good sun bathing space. A very pleasant room and friendly, helpful hotel staff made for a delightful stay. Their own restaurant has recently been refurbished but they unfortunately had a few teething troubles with their food. (An over 'chillied' rabbit dish with no mention of spiciness on the menu and another dish served with a sauce at a lukewarm temperature.)
