Nice but not gorgeous

Posted May 22, 2015
Pros: The food was good and the pool area was nice
Cons: Breakfast service waiter. Somewhere warm and cosy to sit on cold days
Location: La Jolla is a nice town and the comedy store nearby was a fun evening and good value
We didn't have great weather in San Diego which always colours your view of things. The room was nice but wasn't particularly big. We had a pool view, good comfy bed and nice bathroom. The hotel staff were efficient but sometimes I felt that the smile didn't reach the eyes. The car valets were really good, gold star to them and to the bar man and pool girl, but we didn't warm to the waiter on breakfast duty. A tall guy working on morning of 15/16 May. He had a real bad smell under his nose and didn't smile once except when he handed you the check and wanted his tip. the Concierge was also very helpful. Obviously the hotel is completely geared to great weather so when it is cold and wet as during our stay it is unfortunate that there was nowhere warm and cosy to sit and read or enjoy a drink. There was also a big conference going on and it did feel like the staff were focussed on that. I went to the main desk with three small requests one evening and the guy on duty fobbed me off on all three. "Oh ring the concierge in the morning... Speak to housekeeping tomorrow etc." I probably wouldn't book the hotel again. It was the most expensive one we booked on a three week tour but it hasn't been the best.

Beautiful Hotel Close To The Water

Posted May 18, 2015
Pros: It is a historic landmark that is super well maintained with a great location. The staff makes the place special. Great design and colors.
Location: Well if you love the ocean this is the place to stay. It is right across from La Jolla Cove and shopping is right outside the hotel.
The La Valencia is everything we thought it would be. We were in San Diego for a wedding and decided to go to La Jolla and the La Valencia Hotel. It is an older hotel but you can not really tell except by the original room are on the small side but very modern and comfortable. The hotel staff is one of the best that we have ever experienced. The ground of the hotel are beautiful and well keep up. The location is right across from the cove that is just breath taking. The water is clear with multiple colors of blue and green. The rock are covered with seal lions and sea gulls. The location is the best in all of La Jolla in my opinion. My wife and I had a fantastic time at the La Valencia Hotel and I am sure you will too.

Pros: The staff was amazing. It was evident that they were proud of their hotel and wanted us to enjoy it too!
Location: La Jolla is a beach town with wonderful shopping, terrific art galleries, and restaurants with ambience serving delicious food. All is walkable from L
We stayed over following an event in La Jolla. We enjoyed a wonderful dinner in the dining room and watched the sun set through a large window that framed our view. The next morning, after a quick walk through town, we had a morning drink in the lounge where we enjoyed the music of a jazz musician. We did not have brunch on the patio but would like to try this next visit.

Dream Location in La Jolla down-town

Posted Apr 20, 2015
Pros: Downtown location, intimate charm and aesthetics. Great for couples. Spectacular views. Great entertainment in stylish lounge area
Cons: Hallways could use some sprucing up.
Location: Prime La Jolla location in the middle of restaurants, Scripps Park, shopping, Downtown San Diego is a $25 Uber ride
Beautiful older building with charm and intimacy. Staff is wonderfully warm and happy to help. You can get a full ocean view room on the higher floors (keep in mind the lobby is on the 7th floor because the hotel is located on a terrace). We happen to stay there during the Concourse D'Elegance so there was a lot of activity in and around the hotel. Great location to enjoy village shops and coastline walks. Can be noisy depending on what events are scheduled during your stay. (Weddings, parties etc). Everything quiets down by 10pm though. Food was great at La Rue (not too bad cost-wise considering typical La Jolla prices) and love Daniel and Jason. Nancy, the wonderful concierge, is a wealth of information and can help guide your stay.

Pros: Location
Cons: Maintenance of facility, staff training and standards,
Hotel is very run down. Valets and other staff appear a bit disreputable. Wont stay here again.

Nice hotel , great location

Bathroom not super clean and whirlpool tub in suite didn't work. When staff notified about this they didn't do anything to make up for it. They said since I booked through Expedia they couldn't offer me anything. Hotel overall nice and great view from suite though

No Bang for the Buck

Posted Apr 1, 2015
Pros: Location, friendly staff
Cons: A/C units should be upgraded to a more quiet system. The pricing for value is not right.
Location: Great location on Prospect. A could dozen excellent restaurants within easy walk. Beautiful coastline with wildlife just down the hill.
A very "nice" property. This is an 80 year old hotel that was built in the hacienda style, well maintained and in a great location in The Cove. The problem we had was that there are a ton of stairs, so if you want to navigate the entire property be ready to do some climbing. The staff were very professional and inviting. The room we had (622) was a corner room so lots of natural light. The closet was larger than the bathroom which is a problem. You could not take a shower without knocking your elbows a every turn, and the rest of the bathroom was as tiny as I have seen.. The A/C unit was very loud. There was no toilet paper in the lobby restroom, had to ask for it. There is only one elevator for the entire property, so be patient. In La Rue Restaurant we ordered a bowl of fries, the bowl was hot but the fries were old and cold. A lot of little things that irritate. We travel quite a bit and for a hotel that charges over $350/nt they should get more things right. There are several other accommodations in La Jolla Cove that are better value.

Absolutely wonderful!

My mother and I flew down for a night from San francisco. La Valencia was absolutely the best! The check in staff was very friendly, our room was spectacular with an ocean view and the bed was so comfortable! We walked down to George's for a drink and dinner. The location is perfect in downtown La Jolla. I will definitely be back!
