“Suprised!”
I stay in San Diego a lot and usually stay at the larger properties; but will definitely consider the Horton Grand in the future! Great location, convinient dining on propopery (and plenty very close by) and although an old, historic property, very clean and nice room.
“If you like a good nights sleep don't stay here!”
Hotel was very charming and all the staff were superb! It is a great pity about the night club across the street (fluxx). Its seems the total population of 21 year old San Diegan girls went there every night and screamed until 3.00am. It is such a pity as this is such a nice hotel but I just cannot recommed it because of the noise level.
“lots to do in the area”
This is the place to stay if you don't have a car. There were plenty of places to eat in the area. Balboa theatre close by so was able to catch a Howie Mandel show. Hotel is old but well kept. No signs of the ghost but heard some (?) strange noises(?) on my second night.
“Horrible Staff”
The area was a lot fun, the staff at the hotel however were pretentious, rude, and lazy.
“Nostalgic Charm”
We came to San Diego to go to the Ballpark. We chose the Horton Grand for it's convience of location. Being about 6 blocks from the park, we found it easily walkable. There are many restaurants in the area, and even a supermarket a few blocks away. Cab ride from the airport was only $20.00 with tip, compared to $25.00 a day parking fee, it's cheaper not to have a car. The staff was very helpful and friendly. The fireplace (gas) is on a timer, so you can have a fire and go to sleep without worying about it.
“Convenient and Classy”
Super location. Great ambiance. Wonderful historic hotel with modern conveniences.
“no free wireless internet”
Wireless Internet only available for an extra fee. Electrical outlets were weird - maybe old fashioned? - such that nothing I had with me (computer, cell phones) would remain plugged into the wall. No toothbrush or paste available for purchase - they suggested I go to the grocer down the street. No coffee available in the lobby nor any travel cups available for taking room coffee with you when you leave. Bed & pillows & linens nice. I believe I was in the "newer" wing, which only had a view of nearby building walls from the windows, but was a spacious room.
“Charge you for parking and Internet”
My biggest grip about the Grand Horton is that it will charge you $25/night for parking and close to $10 for Internet connectivity. Shouldn't these be free with the hotel????
“Lacking in amenities”
They have a beautiful Cafe and Lounge, but not open. The Courtyard was "closed for Private Party" all the time. The hotel was quite empty, but everyone was on the same floor, room after room. Our area was non smoking, but the people next door were on the balcony (which was connected to ours) smoking, so we could not even have our door open. No coffee, staff was not overly friendly, except for the man who checked up in, was overly friendly. Their "museum" room needed dusting, and the windows washed. It just felt like it was going downhill.
“Weekend downtown”
Stayed downtown to watch the Padres play over the weekend. Unfortunately, they were bad, but the hotel made up for it. Comfortable bed, great location near the Gaslamp District. Was able to enjoy different places to eat and drink and not have to drive.
