“Suprised!”

I stay in San Diego a lot and usually stay at the larger properties; but will definitely consider the Horton Grand in the future! Great location, convinient dining on propopery (and plenty very close by) and although an old, historic property, very clean and nice room.

“If you like a good nights sleep don't stay here!”

Hotel was very charming and all the staff were superb! It is a great pity about the night club across the street (fluxx). Its seems the total population of 21 year old San Diegan girls went there every night and screamed until 3.00am. It is such a pity as this is such a nice hotel but I just cannot recommed it because of the noise level.

Area recommendations
Broadway hotels would be a lot quieter and still close to the action.
Comment from the hotel's management
Thank you very much for taking the time to write a review of our hotel. We are grateful for your positive comments. However, we apologize for the noise and music that was caused by a nightclub across the street from the entrance to our hotel. Weekends it is open and select weeknights. We are in discussions regarding a remedy. In meantime, we have many rooms away from the night club. Please return to our hotel so we can place you in an appropriate room.

“lots to do in the area”

This is the place to stay if you don't have a car. There were plenty of places to eat in the area. Balboa theatre close by so was able to catch a Howie Mandel show. Hotel is old but well kept. No signs of the ghost but heard some (?) strange noises(?) on my second night.

“Horrible Staff”

The area was a lot fun, the staff at the hotel however were pretentious, rude, and lazy.

Comment from the hotel's management
Thank you for taking time to comolete a review. The Gaslamp area is alot of fun with over 100 restaurants and bars within walking distance of our hotel. We are very concerned you found our staff unacceptable. We apologize and have reviewed your comments with our front desk and service staff. Improvements in our service is a must. Please give us another chance next time your plans take you to San Diego

“Nostalgic Charm”

We came to San Diego to go to the Ballpark. We chose the Horton Grand for it's convience of location. Being about 6 blocks from the park, we found it easily walkable. There are many restaurants in the area, and even a supermarket a few blocks away. Cab ride from the airport was only $20.00 with tip, compared to $25.00 a day parking fee, it's cheaper not to have a car. The staff was very helpful and friendly. The fireplace (gas) is on a timer, so you can have a fire and go to sleep without worying about it.

Area recommendations
The gas lamp area where the Horton Grand is located was full of restaurants and bars, The Midway museum (actual aircraft carrier) was in walking distance. Many choices for breakfast, lunch and dinner.
Comment from the hotel's management
Thank you for taking yoru time to write a review. We are glad you were our guests and hope you return soon or next year when baseball is in season. There are 100 restaurants and bars within walking distance of our hotel. Amazing so many in our area. Also, we are pleased to announce our restaurant has reopened with our manager a 35 year veteran of the Gaslamp. We are open daily for breakfast and lunch. Glad you found our staff very helpful and friendly, and enjoyed the gas fireplace that is in every room

“no free wireless internet”

Wireless Internet only available for an extra fee. Electrical outlets were weird - maybe old fashioned? - such that nothing I had with me (computer, cell phones) would remain plugged into the wall. No toothbrush or paste available for purchase - they suggested I go to the grocer down the street. No coffee available in the lobby nor any travel cups available for taking room coffee with you when you leave. Bed & pillows & linens nice. I believe I was in the "newer" wing, which only had a view of nearby building walls from the windows, but was a spacious room.

Comment from the hotel's management
Thank you for taking your valuable time to provide us with a guest review. We charge for Internet connectivity due to our leasing the equipment. For all our guests we like to keep our room rates affordable since most do not use the Internet service at our hotel...thus why we charge those who use it. We regret we have to charge. I have asked our maintenance staff to look for the room with the electrical outlet and replace it. Thank you for letting us know and apologize we did not fix it prior to your arrival. We are fortunate to have a small store located half block from our hotel that has personal hygene and food offerings. We have good news. Our restaurant is reopening in November for daily coffee, breakfast, and lunch. Our suites only building has views a nearby building or downtown street views. We hope you will return and give us another chance.

“Charge you for parking and Internet”

My biggest grip about the Grand Horton is that it will charge you $25/night for parking and close to $10 for Internet connectivity. Shouldn't these be free with the hotel????

Area recommendations
I like the Hotels that are close to the Gas Light District. It's close to the convention center and close to all restaurants and bars in the Gaslight District
Comment from the hotel's management
Thank you for providing us with a guest review for all of us to view. First, thank you for saying with us and hope to provide you again soon with our hospitality. Most of our guests do not have cars when they stay with us. Thus, we feel we should try to keep the room rates affordable for all including those who park cars with us. For those who do park a car with us, we lease two portions of parking lots nearby. These leases are expensive, and the $25 charge is meant to help defry the expense. All of the downtown hotels do charge for parking, whether it be valet (our case) or self park. We lease the Internet connectivity as well.

“Lacking in amenities”

They have a beautiful Cafe and Lounge, but not open. The Courtyard was "closed for Private Party" all the time. The hotel was quite empty, but everyone was on the same floor, room after room. Our area was non smoking, but the people next door were on the balcony (which was connected to ours) smoking, so we could not even have our door open. No coffee, staff was not overly friendly, except for the man who checked up in, was overly friendly. Their "museum" room needed dusting, and the windows washed. It just felt like it was going downhill.

Comment from the hotel's management
Thank you for taking your time to write a guest review. We sure appreciate hearing from you. We have good news. We have contracted with a local popular restaurant in the Gaslamp District to move their operation to our hotel. This will occur by end of November. Thus, we will have our restaurant open daily for breakfast and lunch. We apologize that guest next door was smoking against our policy. We have few smoking rooms in separate area of hotel. I am very sorry that we were not overly friendly and just shared your comments with our front desk staff. I hope you will return to our hotel and give us another chance.

“Weekend downtown”

Stayed downtown to watch the Padres play over the weekend. Unfortunately, they were bad, but the hotel made up for it. Comfortable bed, great location near the Gaslamp District. Was able to enjoy different places to eat and drink and not have to drive.

Downtown is alive. If you want to experience nightlife in San Diego, this is the place to be.
