“Most comfortable bed ever!”
My husband and I are bed and pillow connoisseurs and this hotel bed definitely passed the test. Great location if you're interested in nightlife, which we were, so we couldn't have been more satisfied. Trolley stop just behind the hotel is a very convenient (and crowded) way to get to Qualcomm Stadium for the chargers game. We would definitely come back, if only for the most comfortable hotel bed on the planet.
“Beautiful Hotel, Great Service, Well Worth It”
This hotel is definitely worth staying at. I got a really good deal online so I wasn't expecting much, but when we got there I was pleasantly surprised. It really is just as beautiful as the pictures on the website. The art gallery is amazing, and the lady working there was very kind and knowledgeable. All the staff went out of there way to be attentive and courteous throughout our stay. Yes, the room was small but it was clean and pretty, and the view was just terrific. The only negative were the carpets near the elevators, they were badly stained and looked dingy and dirty. The hallway to our room smelled a little bit musty, but considering it IS a very old hotel I let that and the carpets slide and not ruin our stay here. We will definitely be going back.
“Historic charm meets modern convenience”
Great location, amenities, and decor. I would certainly recommend to anyone. Note: The $35 per night cost to valet was not the climax of my experience.
“Awesome Hotel!”
I had a lovely stay at the US Grant. I found their staff to be so accommodating and helpful, and the hotel itself is just lovely. The hotel restaurant leaves something to be desired (in my humble opinion), but regardless, I would definitely stay at the US Grant again.
“Small Noisy Room”
The location of this hotel is great and the lobby is very nice. The room was a lot smaller then I would have thought for a nice hotel like this. Our room had windows that faced other rooms and it was a little to close for comfort. Also outside the window was a ledge covered in bird poop. Neither is what I want to look at out my window. The bed was very nice and comfy unfortunately the noise outside didn't allow me to sleep in at all. I can normally sleep through anything but it was too loud. I was a little annoyed that there was no fridge only a mini bar (FYI don't remove anything from the mini bar to make room for your own things cause you will be charged and have to clear that up before checkout). Overall this was just a OK hotel not at all what I thought I was getting. I will not be recommending this hotel or staying here again.
“San Diego's Best Hotel”
Best hotel San Diego Gas Lamp has to offer !!!
“great location and design but small rooms”
we stayed here for a night when we were in san diego for our friend's wedding. there were 3 of us in a room with 2 double beds. although everything was gorgeous, the room just seemed small. for some reason the lobby area around the elevators is huge, but the elevators themselves are tiny and the rooms are small as well. i don't know if this is just because of the age of the hotel. also, it seemed like there were some weird stains on the carpet in the hallways. i would stay here again, but only if i got the room for half price like i did this time.
“Personal Preferences Clashed”
Pros: Great service, everyone seems very happy in San Diego and at the US Grant, they are certainly willing to talk and help you with all requests. Room service, cleaning, concierge - all great. Not so pros: no wi-fi in the rooms for free, $12 charge PER device per day. I had requested a room with a view since it was our anniversary, but unfortunately got a room with a mop and bucket outside on a rooftop. Not sure there was much of a view to be had in any room, it's main attraction is it's location (which is great). Room service has a 22% service charge per meal. The Landmark Suite was odd shaped, but appreciated on some level. No closet, you do have some drawers to use. Just odd to not hang things up - personal preference. We had room 914, don't recommend this room, the view is not so great with the mops and things they keep on the roof. Just not what I paid for, but not sure if expectations were set too high on that one. No bathtub, just small bathroom with a nice shower. We scheduled a late check in (7pm), room wasn't ready (no joke), they comped us 2 drinks while waiting for 20 min. All in all, I felt there wasn't anything really great to hang onto. Usually I have at least one thing that stood out that would remedy me thinking about the 'not so pros category'...the service was probably the best. Probably won't come back, but it's not a loss, just not really my preference for another trip to San Diego.
“I will stay in another hotel next time”
In this luxury hotel, I naively assumed that when Wi-Fi was provided, it would be free. Finding out that I had incurred what I felt were unreasonably high charges for checking my email was a surprise. I also assumed that this 1910 hotel was historic because it was advertised as such, and that's the principal reason I booked it. But the poor hotel has been so extensively remodeled and trendily decorated that it has lost any feeling of historic ambience and authenticity. Very sad. That homeless men and women panhandled me as soon I went outside was even sadder, especially since many of the homeless men sitting and sleeping on nearby sidewalks and benches are Navy veterans who hold cardboard signs that state their year of enlistment. In contrast, I also saw large numbers of well-bred, well-groomed and well-behaved dogs being walked near the hotel. Given a choice, I'd rather lead a dog's life in San Diego and stay at another hotel!
“Weekend in downtown San Diego”
this hotel was just beautiful. A lot of attention to detail. Our room was extremely comfortable with feather pillows and a wonderful bed. Bathroom was large enough - big windows with adequate coverings. a chocolate on my pillow each night. Within walking distance to many wonderful restaurants and pubs. Downside was all the homeless that bedded down everywhere, begging for money. You may be a lucky as we were to see a woman walking with her man in nothing but a one piece black underwear thingy. Barely there but she had 4 inch heels on and a fantastic body.
