Swanky hotel in downtownPosted Jul 22, 2014
This is a hotel built in the 70's but the interior looks like an old French hotel. The decor is a bit overdone. We had a room on the 16th floor right across from the NBC building. It is a very spacious room. The staff brought up free sparkling lemonade and chocolate coated strawberries. The only nit is that we were charged $18 resort fee, which is not mentioned in the reservation, but it includes Wifi.

Excellent location for visiting downtownPosted Jul 16, 2014
We enjoyed being able to walk to points of interest, such as the boardwalk, and also found the bus to the Zoo and airport were only a block away. Room and staff were very good, but I was not a fan of the turndown service (an extra visit by housekeeping in the evening). Putting up the privacy sign fixed that. I would consider staying there again.

Great HotelPosted Jul 15, 2014
Stayed at the hotel for the weekend. Stayed in the suit and didnt regret it. Slept with the sliding doors open in the living room and bed room, looking like half the hotel was open to the san diego sky line! The room service has to be one of the best the SD, and the cost is very fair compared to most hotels. Recommend the seafood soup for an APP and any entree. Goodluck BTW Valet is extremely easy, Elevator to LL and your at your car:)

Stunning chic place to stay!!Posted Jul 14, 2014
First time in SD wanted to stay one night in the gaslamp quarter. Decided to try the westgate. So glad we did. Not only was it centrally located it was stunning. All the chandeliers and decor were amazing. The facilities and views were super clean. We arrived very early from out of town. We were going to just leave our luffa and explore SD. But at arrival of 930 am there was a room available. I must say that was a great start to out 4 day SD trip! The room was perfect. Had views of the fountains with a open balcony. We definetly would stay here again. Thank you westgate! The only reason the room comfort didn't get a 5 is because the mattress wasn't as comfortable as my OWN but it still wouldn't make me not stay here ;)

Great locationPosted Jul 14, 2014
Pros: The history and charm of the hotel is amazing. The location is great for walking to restaurants and bars.
Cons: The rooms could be updated a little, without losing the historic charm.
Location: Walking distance to restaurants/bars/harbor/Horton plaza. Easy access to Coronado, Zoo, Sea World, beaches, but need transportation.
The Westgate is a great location! The hotel has a lot of historic charm and the staff is wonderful. You can walk through the Gaslamp quarters, as well as walk down to the boardwalk. The hotel is close to the freeway for quick access to the beaches, San Diego Zoo, Sea World, etc.

Great location - Gas lamp districtPosted Jul 13, 2014
Pros: Opulent feel
Location: Gas Lamp area for bars, cafés and restaurants.
When inside the hotel there is a stately home feel with traditional French influences. I generally prefer modern and contemporary hotels, but this made a pleasant change: a bit of opulence is no bad thing. Turns out that it is the hotel that the BA crews use too, so I guess that is an good endorsement. I didn't eat in the hotel as it is so close to the buzzing Gas Lamp area, where cafe/restaurants are aplenty. I would recommend the hotel and would stay there again.

Well-positioned central hotelPosted Jul 11, 2014
Pros: Its position in the centre of town.
Cons: The provision of local information leaflets for tourists. Does the hotel think a rack of them would make the lobby untidy? Free wi-fi.
Location: It is very close to the Gaslamp Quarter and close to many bus/tram routes. It's within walking distance of the ocean and Balboa Park is not far away.
Positives: Very comfortable room on the 10th floor with a view of the city and the Coronado bridge. A separate dressing room and wardrobe area were nice touches. Negatives: The concierge is not allowed to have a rack of tourist information in the lobby for guests to choose from. That is kept in a back room and she goes and chooses what she thinks you'll like, which is very odd. She told us the city tourist office had shut down but we found a good one in the Sante Fe Amtrack train station. The hotel doesn't have the usual free city maps and provides A4 version, printed on both sides, at different scales, complete with handwritten scribbles and arrows. It was useless and was thrown away almost immediately. Apparently the hotel doesn't like the advertising on the free city maps. We were charged $15 a night for wi-fi, newspapers, bottled water etc. We didn't need the water/newspapers and wi-fi in most hotels is free now, so the charge is a bit cheeky. A woman on reception didn't know if we could hail cabs in the street (in some places you have to go to a cab rank) because she'd only ever had cabs called for her. The hotel has a tiny bar off a very grand, vast lobby. The first time we tried using the bar they had a combo playing while a woman tap danced which wasn't conducive to a relaxing drink. We never went there again and used a pleasant bar in hotel close by for the rest of our visit.
