"Really nice hotel with high parking fee"
The hotel is what you would expect from Hyatt. beautiful lobby, staff exceptional. Rooms comfortable with coffee maker in the room. Lots of restaurant's and shops within hotel and within walking distance. I was a bit disappointed to find the top sheet on the bed was ripped. The $30 parking fee per night is too high.

"Best Experience for our 4 day Vacation!!"
We loved this hotel!!! The staff is very friendly and accommodating, the rooms are comfortable and the facility is very clean. I loved the workout room and pool. The only thing (nothing major) I would ask that they change is the ability to control the fridge temp and serve breakfast.

"Very nice hotel to explore downtown"
We took AMTRAK from LA for a performance of the San Diego Opera and a weekend of exploring San Diego's downtown. We could walk to the Sofia from the Santa Fe Depot and to all the restaurants in the Gaslamp District. Our room wasn't ready for early check-in so the manager offered an up-grade to a suite to accommodate us and spent time going over a map and giving us lots of places to see and eat (including Currant which is in the hotel and very popular). The rest of the staff was just as friendly and the suite was wonderful with a sitting room and good mattress. We had a great weekend and plan to return and stay at the Sofia again.

"Lovely adventure "back in time"."
My husband and I stayed one night for Valentine's weekend. The property is quite lovely. Truly felt like a historic spanish hacienda inside and out. The furnishings reflected an era gone by as well as the wood and adobe structure and surrounding grounds. Remember the movie Barbarosa? How about Zorro? Very romantic setting! We can't wait to return. I'm already looking at our calendars for the next opportunity to escape the hustle-bustle of everyday life and escape to this intimate, picturesque, hide-way not too terribly far from home. We live in Orange County and it was an easy 1-1/2 drive, but we felt miles away (centuries away, actually). We also had incredible weather for mid-February. I suppose it could get quite warm during the hot summer months, but that would make relaxing by the pool that much more desirable.

Where to stay in San Diego

    San Diego Hotel Guide

Commonly referred to as “America’s Finest City,” San Diego often receives praise for its warm weather and sunny skies. This coastal city in Southern California covered in palm trees presents the lure of city life in the downtown Gaslamp area combined with the attraction of the serene beach scene along the shoreline. Browse our selection of affordable travel arrangements to kick start your San Diego vacation today.

    Hotels

The Gaslamp District, which was once a mecca for gambling sailors in the late 19th century, is now an intriguing nightlife hot spot featuring top restaurants and clubs. The accommodations in this area boast the original Victorian-style architecture and are within easy access of eateries and the after-hours scene.

Outside of the cityscape, some of the best hotels in San Diego lie along the coast overlooking the Pacific Ocean. From the accommodations perched on top of the La Jolla bluffs to the beach resorts lined along the Mission Beach Boardwalk, guests are certain to find peace and relaxation at San Diego hotels.

    Transportation

The city is sprawled out, so driving allows travelers the freedom of experiencing all the sites at their own pace. And because San Diego boasts comfortable weather and nearly perpetual sunshine, travelers most often choose to walk or ride bicycles once they arrive at their destination to further explore the area.

For San Diego visitors who don’t reserve car rentals, the San Diego Metropolitan Transit System (MTA) offers both trolley and bus service around the city. The light rail system services the downtown spots, such as the Gaslamp District, along with southern areas near the US-Mexico border, and locations out east in El Cajon. As for the buses, they transport to destinations, such as Coronado, La Jolla, and Hillcrest.

    Travel Basics

Some of the beach laws in San Diego are slightly more relaxed than their East Coast counterparts. For example, several of the beaches in San Diego, such as Ocean Beach, Coronado, and Mission, offer fire pits in the sand. The city even has its own nudist beach, Black’s Beach, which is the largest one in the United States. Though these beaches are lenient with some of their regulations, do realize sleeping on the beach at night and consuming alcohol are prohibited.

Another aspect of the beach San Diego visitors should understand is the ocean tends to be unpredictable with strong riptides and currents. Before venturing into the chilly waters of the Pacific, especially with children, visit the lifeguard tower to find out about any potential risks, as the water’s behavior can change drastically. Know how to escape a rip current before diving into the ocean, and always heed the lifeguards’ warnings. To prevent accidents, only swim in areas where and when a lifeguard is on duty.

    Weather

While San Diego has a reputation for always boasting sunshine and temperature around 70 F, it isn’t always the case. The city’s semi-arid climate sees temperatures drop slightly between December and March, with much cooler temperatures in the evenings. The rest of the year, coastal temperatures tend to range from low to high 70 F, while the height of the summer can see temperatures rise as high as 90 F on some days. However, inland temperatures often reach even higher temperatures. Pack a sweater regardless of when you’re visiting as the evenings cool down during every season.

Locals often refer to the months of May and June as, “May Gray” and “June Gloom,” due to the thick marine layer, which clouds up the shoreline. Although the seaside may be foggy during this time, generally the sky clears up when you drive inland, providing those bright sunny skies San Diego is known for.

Though San Diego can’t possibly live up to the perpetual sunshine and 70 F rumors every day, its sweeping coastlines, nightlife entertainment, and kid-friendly attractions certainly make up for the occasional gray skies.
