Quaint, vintage hotel in central locationPosted May 2, 2015
The Cartwright is like a grande dame; she continues to carry herself as if she hasn't aged a day. We chose it because of the value and location and weren't disappointed in either. Staff attentiveness and knowledge of the sites, best way to get there and food options were bonuses. Also, it's an easy 20 min walk to the Ferry Building.

close to Union Square, restaurants, etc.Posted May 1, 2015
Pros: proximity to everything
Cons: room size to price ratio.
Location: Union Square one block away. Good restaurants around. Cable car stop half a block away that can take you up Powell street over to the wharf
Room was smaller than expected (considering the rate), but that seems to be on par with S.F. room rates these days. Room was clean, no bed bugs, bathroom was clean. Hotel is in an older building, so the rooms are not really modern, it does have some character that way, but it's ok. Wi-Fi worked fine. windows in my room didn't shut very well, so you can hear the noise from the street quite a bit, but on the 7th floor it wasn't too bad.

Extremely clean but extremely smallPosted Apr 20, 2015
I has a love-hate relationship eith this hotel. My first impression when I walked into the room was that it was going to be a horrible stay. The room was so tiny, hot, there was no air conditioning and I had a single bed. Then I walked in and the bathroom was double the size of the room. It was so clean and recently renovated that I just wanted to sleep in there. After a couple of hours I started to like it better, the room was very, very clean and the location was amazing so I recommend it. Just remember there is no air conditioning though, so depending on the weather you may want to consider somewhere else.

Decent hotel in need of maintenancePosted Apr 20, 2015
Cons: Needs to be renovated. Wifi connections need to be improved. Technology needs updating.
The Cartwright is a nice little hotel near Union Square. The facilities are fairly dated and could do with a lot of refurbishing. The bathroom in my room was renovated, but the rest of the room was pretty worn down with old furniture, scratches in the paint and an old carpet. The internet is frightfully slow. The "business center" consists of an old computer with an outdated Microsoft platform and runs Microsoft Office 2003, which is way behind the times if you're going to advertise this as a business center. The staff is helpful and courteous and there does not appear to be too many additional fees.

Great LocationPosted Apr 13, 2015
Location: It is within walking distance of the BART and the trolly, so you can basically get anywhere in the city easily from that point.
This hotel is in a great location for exploring the city. The staff are friendly and welcoming. The rooms are pretty tight though. There is not much space and I didn't like sleeping on a twin mattress. The elevator is incredibly slow. We did experience a fire while we were there. A fire started in the basement and they had an up-to-date system for announcing the fire danger. It was very loud with a voice telling you how to evacuate. That was nice. Everyone got out safely. They put the small fire out quickly and let us go back to our rooms within 20 minutes. I was impressed with the lack of chaos from staff and guests. I was also impressed with how quickly the fire department arrived. I would go back just because of the location. Also, it is nice to have peace of mind about how professionally an organization can handle an emergency.

Comfortable HotelPosted Apr 8, 2015
Pros: The décor was beautiful, internet access good, business section great. Sitting areas varied throughout the first and 2nd level. Comfortable.
Cons: Valet Parking. I was missing money from my wallet that I accidently left in the car and the wait was over 40 minutes to get the vehicle.
Location: The location in Union Square itself was perfect. The trolley was at the corner, shopping down the street, dining within walking distance
I was very pleased with the entire hotel. The staff were beyond understanding/comforting.

Close to everything in the Union Square area.Posted Apr 6, 2015
Pros: Staff was very friendly. Water pressure was great! Location is perfect.
Cons: Perhaps the mattress and carpeting in the room could be replaced fairly soon as well as more sound proof doors.
Location: Right in the hub of Union Square with great access to public transportation, plenty of restaurants and shopping available.
Very friendly staff. Hotel is in the hub of everything in the Union Square area. Hotel staff was very friendly and accommodating and the housekeeping staff kept the area spotless. We requested a room in the back to avoid street noise but were woken several times at midnight and 4:00am as folks were coming back from their evening of fun. The hallway noise was very loud.
