Convenient and clean, but smallPosted Mar 11, 2014
Overall, we had a great experience at the Cartwright! The hotel was very charming and the staff was exceptionally friendly. They were more than happy to recommend activities or help us find the right bus line. The rooms were even smaller than we expected, but the bed and pillows were quite comfortable. We spent so little time in the hotel since we were out exploring the city that the size of the room and bathroom weren't an inconvenience, just not quite what we expected. You can't beat the location of the Cartwright, though. It felt like we were mere steps away from everything. We had a short walk to get to great shopping, dining, the trolley, many bus routes and the BART station. For the great price and location, sacrificing a little space was definitely worth it!

Great LocationPosted Mar 7, 2014
Cons: It is old and smells bad.
Location: Union Square one block away.
The hotel is a 2-3 star....Not a four or five...very small, cramped rooms. The bathroom is tinier than I have had on cruise ships. The hotel smells in the bedroom. The rooms are noisy.

Small hotel room, but close for shoppingPosted Mar 5, 2014
The room was as big as my own room back home and the bathroom was way too small. I couldn't even stand at the sink without my legs touching the toilet. The location was great in downtown union square! It was nice to be able to go shopping! My boyfriend and I did a lot of walking, but we got a good workout going through china town, union square, and going down to pier 39.

Perfect place to stay for a weekend in the CityPosted Mar 5, 2014
Pros: Close to everything, quaint hotel and I loved the history in the old building.
Location: We loved that Lori's Diner and Sears Restaurant were practically next door. Kuletos was perfect for dinner and The Starlight Room for the after party
We spent a long weekend in the city for a wedding. This hotel was within walking distance of the reception. A block from the cable car , a few blocks from Chinatown and close to so many great restaurants too

Bare bonesPosted Mar 3, 2014
Pros: Only stay here is the price is lower than all the other options.
Cons: They can't change the old facility so you need to accept it.
This is an old hotel. It is clean and maintained. The rooms are small. Temperature control comes from opening your windows or turning on the ceiling fan. There is radiator heat but no control. There is no AC. Given the water shortage, I was surprised by the large volume of water flowing out of the shower. There is no hotel restaurant but many options within a short walk. They have just coffee in the morning. They claim "Union Square" but are a block north and a bit west. This is in the direction away from the convention center. It takes maybe 15 minutes to walk to BART's Powell Station and 30 minutes to walk to the convention center.

Great location & good value, not for allergy-pronePosted Feb 26, 2014
Location: Bourbon and Branch is a speakeasy about 1/2 mile away. (Need a reservation) Tonga Room a kitchy 1940s restaurant. Food just ok, but fun atmosphere.
Pros: Location and value. For the location in Union Square it is an excellent price. Part of the reason it is a value is the rooms are slightly smaller, but big closet and they made excellent use of the space. Extremely friendly and welcoming staff. (All individuals we interacted with were helpful and lovely.) Cons (not uncommon to the area, but for those who may not expect it): Parking is on the next block, up the hill. (Most hotels partner with local garages, so common.) Make sure to have the front desk stamp the ticket to get the discounted hotel rate. They are pet-friendly, so if very allergic to dogs and cats (as I am) you may want to stay elsewhere. No AC, though not uncommon. Ceiling fan provided white noise and breeze.

Great Location, Friendly Staff, Quaint HotelPosted Feb 26, 2014
Pros: Location is the best thing about hotel. We took BART from airport to Powell station and walked a few blocks to the hotel which was centrally located
Cons: Mattress should be replaced soon.
Location: Close to BART, buses, trolleys... No need to drive or take expensive cab rides. Close to restaurants, shopping, museums, Chinatown,...
We enjoyed our stay at The Cartwright. No issues. Will definitely go back.

Nice price, comfortable and close to everything.Posted Feb 25, 2014
Very nice, clean hotel, with a very comfortable bed. There is a little street noise, but if you want to experience the city as a resident would, this is the place. The staff is friendly. I wish they had Blue Bottle coffee in the room, considering this is San Francisco. But, overall, an excellent choice for the value.

Historical Charm in Accessible LocationPosted Feb 25, 2014
Pros: The location is wonderful, close to all public transport and the action of Downtown San Francisco.
Cons: There is some noise, even between the hotel walls but nothing that impedes sleep, and indeed adds to the charm.
Location: Close to all of Downtown San Francisco, shopping and public transport for further adventure. Great Location that is also very safe!!
The Cartwright Hotel is a cosy hotel that provided with me with ease of access to allthe delights of San Francisco. The hotel is charming, clean and confortable and holds so much history, if only the walls could speak! The service was impeccible.
