Needs updating.

Pros: The artistic design and amenities.
Location: Near Market Street and other nice shops.
The bathrooms were run down and need updating. Rooms were small for the cost.

Exceeding expectations

Posted Sep 8, 2014
Even though this hotel had plenty of recommendations, I still tought I would find it 'ok'. It so happens the hotel is amazing: clean and modern rooms and facilities, spacious rooms (I got a Standard), excelent shower, great food. Adding to that is an impressive staff: quick on duty and responsive - the concierge even offered to text me restaurant options when I called from the street asking for recommendations. The only thing I would say is that at night the bar is really close to the lobby and is like you're getting into a party (at rooms no noise).

Wonderful experience overall.

Pros: Friendly and helpful staff, excellent location
Location: see above
Steve, the concierge was a great help in securing my boarding pass. I did not have a confirmation number so he got on the phone and managed to get to the right people to secure the info needed. Kudos to Steve! Bellmen, desk clerks, all staff excellent. I prefer the location because the Clift is near good restaurants, Union Square and all the best shopping.

overnight getaway

Posted Sep 5, 2014
Pros: The décor was very beautiful
Cons: Coffee in room and small refrig. for left overs.
Location: We always like the Union square area, we went on the double decker bus, did the duck bus, went to the golden gate park, eating out, shopping.
My husband and I go to S F quite often, we like to find different hotels when we go. We have love everyone we have stayed at. This hotel was quite fascinating, It was dark and the décor was amazing... (although animal lovers may approve of the tusk couch and other animal parts. I likes the lights that are planted in the floor, your hallways were twice the size of any hotel I've seen. We took a walk into the bar which was so beautiful, the bar itself was a master piece. The only thing that bothers me is, No coffee in the room, and the bathroom was really small,.Also we always ask for a window facing the street, as we love to see all the lights at night, they tell us ok, and we seem to always get a room facing the back of a building. All in All it was a very beautiful hotel, Also they need to put a Large sign in front of building as we passed it twice, and we heard other saying the same thing. Very Very nice place, we would stay again, but we need to ckeck out other hotels, as there are so many to choose from.

A must / the best ratio of room quality over rates

Posted Sep 5, 2014
I had been hiking in Yosemite for 3 days and needed much rest before taking my flight back to Quebec City. As soon as I entered the Clift loby, its low light level and art deco style put me in a relax mode I had experienced only a few times over my 30 years of travelling. This was most welcomed after my 5 h drive from El Portal. I recall one hotel in Fukuoka, Japan, one in Bali and another one in Amsterdam. And, this was just the beginning of my stay at Clift. The rooms are cosy, their minimal deco puts you in relaxing state and makes you smile of happiness. Everything in the room, from the position of the TV to the small boxes to put your shirts, is well thought. The happiness of staff is contsgeous and adds the cherry over the sundae.

Beautiful hotel, excellent service

Smooth, easy check-in. Only a few blocks from BART for easy access to/from SFO. Easy access to anywhere located only 2 blocks from Union Square. Initial room has lingering smoke (even though hotel is non-smoking) and they were out of other comparable rooms, but quickly upgraded us to a suite w/no hesitation. Friendly staff, I'd definitely stay here again.

Disappointing stay at this hotel.

Pros: The staff was very helpful and pleasant.
I should start with the positives. The staff was very nice and helpful. We were able to check into our room early...that was a plus for us. But, the hotel is very dated! Our room was a total disappointment. Very old! The room did not look anything like the Expedia pictures. The carpet was full of stains. The purple color reminded us of a little girl's bedroom. The bathroom was incredibly tiny and cramped. The toilet was like a men's locker room toilet. The shower was full of mildew. The shower head was broken so we had to hold it upright so you could get under the water. We left thinking, " no wonder this place is kept so dark!" Will try another hotel next time.
