“Terrible”

While this hotel was in a great location, the room was the worse I've ever been in. To start, it was clear the bed had not been changed but rather re-made. The pillows did not have dust covers on them and hair, not mine, was on one of them. Plus, the bed itself did not have a basic mattress cover under the sheet. The mattress was just covered with a very thin sheet (not even fitted) over the mattress! I added a towel from the bathroom under me to sleep on this rock-hard and uncomfortable mattress. The bathroom showed signs of wear & tear with mold in cracks by the tub ground in dirt by the door jam. To add insult to injury, the maid left an envelope on the room desk for "tips". The tv had no local/national channels but only music channels that I could find. At 6:30 am the next morning the front desk which was suppose to have coffee ready was closed. I walked down the street to a gas station/mini-market to get coffee. Had I not arrived so late at check-in I would have moved to another hotel. This was a surprise given all the positive comments I reviewed prior to booking my room.

“Perfect Budget Stay in SF”

Can't go wrong with this place. We needed a cheap room in a decent location and we hit the bulls eye. Parking was a plus.

“I will never stay anywhere else in San Francisco”

I lived in San Francisco for three years and go back very often. Most hotels there cost more than three times what this one does, and can be noisy and a hassle. All you have to do is figure out the buses and not be in a big hurry and the Country Hearth Inn is the perfect choice. It is in an unbeautiful neighborhood, but is just a few streets below the most stunning blocks of Pacific Heights, and is right next to the Presidio. You can ****PARK YOUR CAR**** there off street and for free, but there aren't many spaces. The people who run ther Country Hearth are very sweet and helpful. It is amazingly easy to find. Your fellow guests are modest travelers and agreeable.

Area recommendations
Lose yourself in any residential neighborhood in San Francisco.
Getting around
Don't be afraid of the public transportation in San Francisco. Always allow extra time. You will alyways have a good time watching the scenery go by.

“Great find”

Great hotel and good base from which to tour the city. I was looking for a cheap one to bundle with our plane tickets to SF, and there are apparently a lot of hotels with bedbugs in the city! Not here--just a clean, comfortable room in a quiet hotel with friendly staff. 5 or 6 spaces in the parking lot but you can park on the street too. Great for getting in to see the city. Backed up against the Presidio, right on Lombard. Walk a block down and one street over to Chestnut to catch the #30 bus straight to Fisherman's Wharf, Embarcadero, Financial District...also the #28 comes even closer and will take you west right to the Golden Gate Bridge. Close to a Walgreens, a pub and a Pluto's restaurant/salad bar. Good neighborhood. Continental bfast was pastries from some local bakery. I'd stay there again quick.

“Nice hotel, great value in a nice neighborhood”

If you are looking for a fancy hotel with all the amenities, this place is not for you. However, if you are looking for a nice, clean hotel on a budget then this is your place! The neighborhood is partly residential, nice and quiet. Our room was very clean and we were glad to see an iron & ironing board. The bed was comfy! There is a fridge but you have to rent it ($3/day).The staff are very nice. and they can arrange tours for you or a shuttle to the airport ($15/person). In the morning there is coffee, tea, juice, fruit and pastries at the front desk but because the area is very small you have to take your breakfast back to your room. No prob. There is no restaurant but there are plenty of eateries within walking distance. There are several buses in the area to take you downtown or to Fisherman's Wharf. There's also a Walgreen's drugstore 2 blocks away in case you forgot anything. I would stay here again.

Area recommendations
Definitely would recommend Fisherman's Wharf. It is very touristy, but has a lot to offer and is easily accessible by one of the many city buses. FW is where you would buy tickets for various boat rides, incl. the one to Alcatraz, buy bus tour tickets, rent a bike, shop, eat, see the sea lions. Or you can just find a bench and listen to one of the many street musicians as you sip your coffee or eat the famous clam chowder in a sourdough bread bowl. Some of the free things there are: Musee Mechanique (a sort of arcade museum), tours of WWII submarines, viewing the sea lions. You can also take a lovely walk along the shoreline and view the many sailboats out in the bay. If you choose to take a boat ride, bus tour, etc, look for coupons online first. Golden Gate Park is another lovely area which has a Japanese Tea Garden, The De Young Art Museum and the California Academy of Sciences museum. It is also just lovely to stroll around. It is easily accessible by city bus. Another must see is Yosemite National Park. ABSOLUTELY GORGEOUS but about 20 degrees warmer than San Francisco, so dress in layers. Definitely some beautiful photo ops--giant sequoias, waterfalls, Half Dome, El Capitan, plus those crazy rock climbers!
Getting around
Getting around is SO EASY! There is a very good bus system. The buses are $2.00 for adults, $0.75 for seniors, children and handicapped. All buses are wheelchair accessible and even have a bike rack on the front where you can secure your bike. Take a transfer even if you don't think you'll need it. It is good for about 3 hours from the time you board the 1st bus, even if it is on a return trip on the same bus. Each bus stop has an electronic sign which constantly updates the arrival time of the next bus(es), so you're not left wondering. I WOULD NOT advise taking the subway (BART) from SFO airport downtown to get to your hotel, unless your hotel is downtown. We didn't realize how far our hotel was from downtown and had to pay $15 for a taxi to take us from the nearest subway (BART) station to our hotel. Try to get a shared-ride van instead. Forget the taxi to/from the airport unless you want to spend about $40 one way.
What to pack
A medium-weight jacket or sweater is a must! We were there in early September and it was chilly and breezy, hardly reaching 70 degrees.
Must see
YOSEMITE!!!!! It's about 3 1/2 hour drive from San Francisco, but hopefully you booked a tour so someone else is doing the driving. GORGEOUS< GORGEOUS< GORGEOUS! A bus tour around the city is also very nice. There are open-top as well as closed-top double decker buses which provide little machines with headsets so you can listen to a narrated tour. The narrations are available in several languages.
Family-friendly activities
Family-friendly activities abound: Fisherman's Wharf, Alcatraz , Yosemite, Exploratorium, Golden Gate Park, California Academy of Science Museum, bike rentals, kite flying along the waterfront.

“No frills.....but clean and comfortable”

This is a no-frills place, but it is clean and comfortable. And the location can't be beat. If you are just looking for a clean, comfortable place to sleep, this is one of the best bargains in The City.

“Not great, not bad, just okay”

Close walk to Presidio, Palace of the Arts and Exploratorium. About 2 mile hike to the Wharf. Parking is very limited. Outside is a little run down, but bathroom newly remodeled and very nice. They charge $3.00/day to rent a tiny refrigerator....really??? Free pastries, orange juice and coffee in the AM. If you're in San Fran to sightsee and vacation, it's reasonably priced for your needs!

Area recommendations
Probably closer to the Wharf and /or Union square. (If you really, really like to walk, then anywhere in San Fran works)

“Good place for the money in the heart of the Marina dsitrict”

The room was fine and the people were eager to help when we needed anything. The breakfast isnt much (coffee, muffin, apple, thats it) but its better than nothing. Parking is free but there are only 6 spaces so your on the street if you dont get back early.

Area recommendations
The Marina district is the best place to stay due to its proximity to many restaurants and bars. Check the hotel location and make sure its not right on Lombard ST. Lombard is the main artery through that part of town and it gets loud.
Dining
Lots of really nice restaurants and markets on Chestnut ST.

“This is where we will stay on our next trip to San Francisco.”

The room was clean and comfortable. The staff was very helpful with directions and sightseeing information. Hotel located in nice residential area and felt very safe. Can see the Golden Gate Bridge from the corner a couple of blocks from hotel. Bus route close by and very affordable to use to tour city. The only mishap we had was a staff member walked into room without knocking. He apologized. We reported this and he was instructed not to enter rooms without knocking. Also, housecleaning came in while we were gone to breakfast and starting cleaning room (stripped bed, took towels) before we had removed our possessions. Nothing was missing. We would still stay here again.

Area recommendations
Just walking the city and seeing the architecture of the buildings and enjoying the climate and beautiful flowers and landscaping is well worth the trip. The people were friendly and riding the city buses was not bad at all. Shoppers paradise. Fisherman's wharf is great. Alcatraz tour is a MUST if just for the scenery of looking back at San Francisco from the bay area. Lots of international people, all tourist like we were. All friendly. We had a great experience. And the drive to Hwy 1 for our 1st view of the Pacific Ocean was awesome. Bring a jacket and wear good walking shoes!!
