Very outdatedPosted Sep 13, 2014
Cons: All of above
Small step to bath caused wife to fall and nearly break nose and large bruise to face. I am 80 and long walk to car parking lot. No help with luggage. NO light over sink. Have to ring buzzer to get let in. TV has poor reception. Can not recommend

Excellent location, low costPosted Sep 1, 2014
Pros: The elevator is cool, reminded me of Paris in the early 1900's!
Cons: Cleanliness of the shared bathrooms needs improvement.
Location: Super close to Chinatown and the California street cable car. 2 Starbucks in the same block, and an Irish pub too. Shopping in Union Square nearby!
This quaint bare bones hotel suited our budget and was situated perfectly for site seeing. Sharing a bathroom was not a big deal, and the room itself was adequately sized and clean! Noisy at night, but let's get real, it's downtown city centre. Earplugs a must. Staff was pleasant and the access to a kettle and microwave made travelling much easier for those with food requirements, other than the restaurants around. All in all, this hotel is decent and priced appropriately.

Perfectly adequate hotel in the city centrePosted Aug 26, 2014
Pros: The location which is in the heart of the city.
I stayed here for 12 days and had no problems with this hotel. When I arrived, the staff greeted and welcomed me to the city as it was my first time. The room was clean and decorated in "graffiti" art. I'm not a fussy guest and I thought the room (which was en-suite) was adequate and suitable for my needs.

Good hotel for the pricePosted Aug 14, 2014
Pros: Best was the central location for the price. It was kept clean (not a dump for being near 100 years old)
Cons: Keep the heat in the rooms off in the rooms in the summer and have regular tea avaiable.
Location: See our experience
This hotel is almost 100 years old and has lots of charm with different paintings all over. This hotel is one block from the China Gate. It was very easy for us to walk to many sights like the Ferry Building, cable cars, Chinatown, Fisherman's Wharf and Coit Tower. It was also easy for us to get to public transportation. There was a good variety of eating places nearby and even a movie being filmed outside the hotel door while we there. The room wasn't huge and only had a queen bed and sink. Very rarely had to share the shower/toilet near our room. We made good use of the refrigerator as the temperature in San Francisco was warmer than usual while we were there. No air conditioning (only opening of our windows) and the heat was on for a couple of days so our room was a bit stuffy. Breakfast of bagel or toast was okay but they didn't have black tea most of our stay. Staff were great-friendly, helpful, courteous

Excellently positioned great value hotelPosted Aug 3, 2014
Pros: Position, price, excellent friendly staff
Cons: A larger breakfast room would be a good idea
Location: Very close to Union Square, across the road from Chinatown, a shortish walk to North Beach. Good restaurants very close.
The hotel is great value and very central. The art theme may not be to everyone's taste and individual experience can depend to some extent on what room you are allocated

Great location, friendly staff, and unique SF stayPosted Jul 14, 2014
Pros: Location and price!
Cons: A/C in rooms but that would take away charm
Location: Montgomery Station is closest and convenient to MUNI/BART and the Powell and Hyde cable cars are both easy walking distance.
I usually stay at other boutique hotels in SF, but have always wanted to experience Des Arts and glad I did. Very friendly staff greeted me at check-in and was shocked but smiled when handed my room key (yes, an actual key). From the old elevator, to the decorative hallway walls, and to my painted room, my experience was pleasantly surprising and unique as the city. TIPS: Be sure to as for a room with a private bathroom when booking (unless you don't mind sharing), Montgomery Station is closest and convenient to MUNI/BART, and be sure to ask for a fan at check-in too cool your room.

Art Gallery HotelPosted Jul 5, 2014
Pros: The room, the staff, the art
Location: Near chinatown, the bus and tram line that take you right to Fishermans Wharf, also close to the subway system. Couple of bars in the area
This hotel was like no hotel I have ever stayed in before. It was like sleeping in an art gallery. Perfect location, close to the bus and tram system and there are a few bars in the area to choose from. The hotel is a bit old, but it is renovated. The hotel staff was really nice and knew a lot about the city and where to go.
