Interesting character-good staff, poor management.Posted Jul 2, 2014
One of the main requirements we had for choosing a hotel was internet service, which this hotel advertised. Being from outside of the U.S, we do not have a phone data plan, so rely heavily on internet for trip-related info, from travel facilities to nearby restaurants & sightseeing, email updates from the event organizers I was there to attend, as well as personal communications via email, facebook, Skype, etc. Internet has become the standard for communication in our lives, especially important when we are away from home. Of the 6 days we stayed there, the internet worked for a few hours on the first & last days only. When we enquired politely when it would be fixed, we were told someone would be coming the next day. This went on each day until we left. Our trip was made much more difficult & less enjoyable without the ability to communicate & research things in the area, as this hotel had promised. We were polite with the staff, as we knew they couldn't do anything personally. Several of them related that it was typical that the managers would run & hide when there was a problem, leaving the staff to deal with it without resources. Could've been a nice stay...

Beautiful HotelPosted Jun 30, 2014
Pros: The suite that we were given was brilliant, the bed was huge and the bathroom was lovely
Cons: Maybe a little TLC couldnt do any harm
Location: Location of the hotel was brilliant 2 minute walk to a main street where you could get any transport. Only 15 minute walk to the centre of town
I stayed here for three nights and thoroughly enjoyed our time there. We had a beautiful suite and the staff were extremely nice and helpful. I would definitely stay at this hotel again.

Great CharmPosted Jun 22, 2014
Pros: Location. Price. Cleanliness. The charm of every detail - the elevator, the stairwell, the hallways, just all of it was cool.
Cons: I don't think this could be improved. But, being as old as the building is - things creak. The floors we walked, creaked. The floor above, creaked. OK
Location: You're in the heart of it! You're not going to have to go to far and you'll be to the waterfront, or Chinatown, theater district, Market district.
I was excited to be staying here the moment it came in to view as I walked up Geary and spotted it. Immediately saw the character. Once checked in and got onto the elevator to go up the the Opera Suite on the 4th floor, it just got more fun. Nice big room, had a fireplace and HUGE King bed that you have to hop onto. Large 4 poster frame with nicely appointed bedding. This room had windows that opened and you could step out onto the fire escape and get a great view of the surroundings. That night that I stayed, after returning from a concert at The Fillmore (about a 6 block walk away) we were able to enjoy spreading out a blanket (our own) on the fire escape, listen to the sounds of the city, and watch the moon rising over the city. So fun! - So, now, that said. The room's 'character' was created with the pretty, albeit well worn furnishings. There was a tear on the arm of the couch, and one of the chairs had the piping around the backrest missing. But, seriously, it was SOO minor and the pieces were from a period when they still looked fitting for the space. Some of the papered walls were flaking - again, just gave a feel that you were in a by-gone time of the city. We adored it. Everything WORKED, the bathroom was lovely, again holding a regal feeling, by not being so 'new'. I will highly recommend and when I come back to San Francisco, I'd enjoy staying here, again. I'll even request that same room! :)

A little tired but okPosted Jun 9, 2014
The hotel is a little tired to be honest. The bathrooms in particular need some work. That said, it had everything you needed. A little further from the centre of San Fran than I'd have liked, but pretty reasonable price. Takes about 20-25 mins walk to Union Square.

Creepy, Old and smellyPosted Jun 6, 2014
The website states self-park is free, but they mean street parking. I don't need the hotel to tell me to park on the street (which is impossible in that area); it sounds like there'll be a garage I can park in by myself. So that was misleading, and i had to valet for $25. It says wireless is free, but the wireless wasn't working during my stay. The room was smelly and spooky, with heavy curtains on the windows and over the bed, which are dust magnets. The carpet and armchair were dingy and old. My friends were checking in the next day and I desperately called them to book somewhere else, but it was too late to cancel. Their room was the same.

Pictures can be deceiving- hotel was disappointingPosted Jun 2, 2014
Pros: Just the location. Nothing else at all
Cons: Everything! Safer windows, definitely a much better bathroom and maybe actual water to be able to shower and less creaking cupboards.
Location: Pretty much everything is close by. This is the only positive about this hotel.
I would put this hotel in the category of a motel. I think they just charge the money that they charge as it is in the heart of San Francisco. Other than that a room at this hotel is not worth more than say $70 or $75/night. The lobby is great and the area where this hotel is, is great as well. However that's about it as nothing else beyond the front desk is great about this hotel. We checked in and from the elevator (which took ages to go up from the lobby area to the 5th floor) to the water in the shower was all crappy and a terrible experience. We get to the room and upon entering it looking like a decent and clean room. However after stepping inside, the first thing I wanted to do was open the windows due to a stale/old smell coming from the room. I realized that the windows are old style and one of them had the lock broken and our window had a emergency stair case right outside it so with the broken lock it would be very easy for someone to come in and either harm us or steal our stuff. I just stuck a pen in the lock area and hoped that no one would do anything bad. The window would not stay open and kept falling down and the other window did not open at all! The bathroom was super tiny and the shower curtains were put as if they were just thrown around and they kept sticking to the body while taking a shower. Now for the worst part ever - the water from the shower was literally just dripping! There was no pressure whatsoever! Overall a terrible experience.
