Not your dream stay - Nightmare in Union Square

Posted Oct 25, 2014
Pros: n/a
Cons: Stay at a different hotel.
Location: not relevant
Without a doubt, the worst possible experience one could have for any hotel. It was dark, dingy, dirty, and terribly small, not to mention unsecure (no deadbolt on the room door). I am at a loss for words to truly describe how disappointed and "ripped off" I was. After the first night, we asked about switching to a larger room, but were told we would have to wait until noon the next day before changes could be made. Needless to say, we were ready at noon to see what our options might be, but the front end manager kept stalling. By the time we finally saw another room (around 2 pm) and decided it wasn't any better, we decided to go to another hotel. If we had stayed, we would have had to live out of our suitcases for the six days because there was no place to store our clothes in the room. In addition to being the worst possible experience, I can’t think of one redeeming quality of the hotel or our stay. We did not sleep well that first night because the mattress was as hard as a rock, the room was not properly secured, the temperature of the room could not be controlled, and noise from the restaurant on the floor below was excessive. I doubt that I will ever stay at another Kimpton Hotel. It is hard to understand how other travelers can provide such positive reviews. All I can imagine is that they are either very inexperienced or have very low expectations. I have traveled extensively, and I know what a dump is when I see one.

I am so sorry we fell short of expectations. As you can imagine our goal is to exceed them. Thank you for the feedback. I will meet with the team this afternoon and work on plans for improving.

Great location at a nice price

Posted Oct 16, 2014
Pros: The rooms and the scotch selection in the bar
Cons: Restaurant prices at breakfast are high - but many choices within walking distance. Go around the corner to Mel's drive in for basic breakfasts.
Location: Heart of the city - cable cars, union square, BART and buses on Market. Rent bikes and ride the Golden Gate.
We have stayed at the Palomar twice. Great location right off Market within easy walking distance to cable cars and Union Square, and a very reasonable price given the location. Room is very comfortable with high quality furnishing. Wifi works well, room includes a safe and all the basic amenities. Staff has been uniformly friendly and helpful while we have been there.

Boutique Hotel Close to Bart, Cable Cars and Mall

Posted Oct 13, 2014
Pros: We really liked the location of the hotel, the friendliness and helpfulness of the staff and the feel of the hotel.
Cons: Perfect stay for us, can't think of a thing that could have been improved.
Location: The location is right near the Powell Station Bart, the Muni and the Cable Cars. It is next to the Westfield Mall, Macy's, the Apple Store.
We were greeted by a staff that was so friendly and welcoming, they were interested in our adventures and helpful in planning our jaunts about the city. The Hotel is spotlessly clean, well appointed and close to all public transportation. Coffee was served in the morning and wine happy hour in the evening. The hotel appears so have been a historic building that was converted to the hotel. A lovely restaurant is on the 5th floor. We stayed for 4 days and really felt like we had explored San Francisco well. We were so happy to come back to our little "home away from home" after the long days out sight seeing, walking and eating.

Pleasing hotel downtown

Posted Sep 25, 2014
We liked everything about this hotel except for one odd issue with its configuration. Our initial room was on the 5th floor which also happens to be where the restaurant and outdoor bar is located. The windows of our room looked right out on the patio, which made opening the curtains impractical. Additionally, the noise in the evening was unacceptably loud. We asked to be moved to another room and were accommodated cheerfully. The new room was just fine and very quiet. So, fine hotel, just don't accept a room on the 5th floor!

Thanks for staying with us. Our new restaurant and outdoor patio have been quite the hit. We are working on solutions to ensure the liveliness of the lounge does not cause inconvenience to our other guests. We will get it rectified soon!

great San Francisco trip

Posted Sep 25, 2014
The service at this hotel is the best we have experienced in years and we travel all the time. From check in to car retrieval, everything. The room was very clean, comfortable. We had two issues and one was fixed immediately, that being a slow drain in the bathroom. The other was that a fan didn't work in the bathroom and after a shower, it took a while for it to dry out. Other than that, it's a great place to stay. Location is perfect for both downtown SF as well as walking south of Mission.

Another fine Kimpton hotel this one by the Bay!

Posted Sep 23, 2014
Pros: Location, facilities including a bar and restaurant, staff treatment, and the total experience "feel."
Cons: Housekeeping did not service our room the first day, but a staffer immediately came up to "freshen up" the room when we called to complain.
Location: Right south of Market on 4th St. Very convenient to public transport, shopping, and walking to Union Square (and up to Nob Hill if you wish).
This hotel's location in SF is excellent. The décor in both public spaces and in our room is imaginative and fun. The staff members we encountered were professional and inviting. We were treated to a small cheese tray and a bottle of wine upon arrival for a three-night stay. We will likely stay here again when returning to San Francisco.

Nice location, fabulous staff

Posted Sep 19, 2014
Pros: The staff, and the nice rooms.
Cons: I would like better lighting in the bathrooms, but most hotels don't have very good lighting there for some reason.
Location: Located near the Powell train/cable car station. Easy to get there from the airpot. Right in the middle of some great shopping as well.
This hotel had the nicest staff I have EVER encountered.. they were extremely kind, actually got us a gift to celebrate the reason we were there.. very very helpful to us as tourists, it was great! I will only stay here when I come to San Francisco again!!

The perfect location for easy access to places

Posted Sep 11, 2014
Pros: Its location
Cons: House Keeping Requests
Location: Yerba Buena Garden, Union Squares.
I booked this hotel because of its perfect location: Next to Market Street, 1 minute walking distance from BART and 5 minutes walking to Union Square. When we arrived at the hotel, we checked in very easily. They have prepared for our arrival. We didn't expect so much from the hotel, except a clean and easy accessible hotel. With their limited person, do not submit a late night House Keeping Request. They might not be able to quickly respond to your request. We requested for a water kettle at 9.00 pm, it never showed up. We requested it again the following day at 4.00 pm and had to call twice to get the request done. If I had a chance to go back to SFO, I am thinking about staying in this hotel again. I would recommend this hotel for those who look for a hotel with a lot of access to places: meals, tourist attraction, and shopping. Highly recommended!

Noisy restaurant in the atrium

Posted Sep 9, 2014
Pros: Market Street location is central to Union Sq and many fine restaurants
Location: all visitors to SFO will be struck by the odors of human waste on the streets. It's a shame that so many suffer homelessness, mental illness
We'd stayed before and loved it, but a new restaurant on the 5th floor - in the atrium- made too much noise

Sorry about the noise. Our new outdoor patio has been quite the hit and we are working aggressively to ensure all of the restaurant guests and hotel guests are equally happy.
