Excellent staff, location

Posted Apr 16, 2014
Fantastic stay, love their staff (coffee, jewel!!), excellent location, close to everything, 2 streets to Union square, Niketown, across there is Uniglo, Wallgreens, 2 doors away there is H&M, Thai restaurant next to the hotel serves great noodles (not the rice though). My only complaint - room too dark Otherwise is 5/5

Awful

Posted Apr 11, 2014
Pros: Nothing.
Cons: New mattresses, new sheets, new furniture, better air circulation/ temperature regulating system.
I was booked for three nights at the Hotel Union Square, my first time at this hotel though I travel frequently to the Bay area and stay in Union square several times per year. I am a fan of boutique hotels and prefer them to the big chains. I knew as soon as I got to the room that I didn't like this hotel. The room had a horrible musty smell and was so dark. I was in a large room on the 6th floor, facing away from the street so noise was not an issue. The furnishings in the room were shabby - the couch and chair were dirty - though the bathroom was fine and the shower was great. The worst part was the bed - I think that's where the musty smell was coming from! The mattress smelled, the sheets were terrible and I was itchy the entire night! I didn't sleep a wink. Although I didn't see bugs in the bed - I did check - I felt like something was crawling all over me the whole night. It was also hot in the room - and then too cold - because the window air conditioner did not have a temperature sensor. I checked out and moved to another hotel the following morning. The front desk person did offer me an upgrade but I just couldn't stomach sleeping there another night. For the same price I moved to the Hotel Nikko, just around the block and I felt like I was in paradise. I realize there is something to be said about the predictability of a large chain hotel. Do yourself a favor and don't stay at the Hotel Union Square.

Dear Melissa, Thank you for taking the time of writing a comment about your stay, I am disappointed to read that you did not feel comfortable staying with us. I understand your discomfort but I wish you would have tried a different room type that you would have felt comfortable into. Our hotel is more than a 100 years old and we do have very different room types. Best regards

Personality Hotel captures hotel's essence

Posted Apr 4, 2014
Pros: It definitely had personality.
Cons: The title of the "Queen Deluxe" room was a little misleading. We barely had space to walk around the bed or turn around in the bathroom.
Location: The hotel was central to shopping, the streetcar turnaround, and various other forms of transit to take you anywhere throughout the city.
The hotel was in a central location within the shopping district, only a block or two from Union Square, near various forms of transit. The staff was courteous and friendly. They were kind and happy to oblige us when we requested to upgrade our room to increase space.

Nice hotel

Posted Apr 2, 2014
I was quite satisfied with the room and hotel as a whole. There was a spinning chair in our room, which was a fun surprise, and the bed was extremely comfortable. Rate was a tad pricey, but the location is unmatched in the heart of shopping and the city, so it was easy to travel. One thing I didn't like was the low flow showerhead-less water pressure than I needed to shower proper, for me personally. But overall, great stay.

Great location but overpriced

Posted Mar 29, 2014
Pros: Location
Cons: Get front desk staff that's friendly and helpful. Expand hotel room information and add photos that aren't misleading. Upgrade card key system.
Location: Union Square is the city center for upscale shopping. Chinatown is about a 20 or 30 minute walk away. Market Street is also not far away.
Although Hotel Union Square has an excellent location, the room I stayed in was incredibly small and a major disappointment for the price I paid. Bathroom and work desk space was also not up to par. Flimsy work desk chair too. Security lock didn't work either and it took me an average of 12 TIMES to enable the room key/card to work. Photos of the room are very misleading - no frills, no robe - can use a better description Being a native Northern Californian, I stayed in several hotels in San Francisco but decided to try something different. Needless to say, I will not be coming back to this hotel. Front desk service was also below par. Room Tip: Definitely make sure you know what you're getting with the "No Frills Double". Also consider parking at the Ellis-O'Farrell Parking Garage for a safer environment and better rate (save $8 over 24 hours)

In the middle of it all

Posted Mar 18, 2014
Pros: This is a boutique hotel! It is very unique and unlike any "chain" hotel you would stay in.
Cons: The concierge who was there the first day we checked in was not very friendly at all!
Location: The location is perfect!! 2 minute walk to all major public transportation options including the Bart, cable cars, and buses....
Great hotel in an amazing location. The cable car runs right in front of the hotel. 5 minute walk to union square. The location is perfect! The hotel itself is great! They call themselves a "personality hotel" and I think that is a perfect description. The building itself is very old which makes the lay out of the hotel super cool. The rooms are very nice with all the accommodations you need. The rooms are tiny and the bathroom is even smaller, but your in San Francisco and so the amount of time spent in the room was minimal anyway! The decor was very modern and was very well taken care of! I hope to return to San Fran again someday, and I will definitely stay here again!!

Old hotel in good location

Posted Mar 13, 2014
Pros: Good location Good beds Friendly reception
Cons: Sink is very small smell on the room and floor ( 3rd floor)
Location: near cable car and bus for major attractions.
Reception was friendly. Good location for bus and cable car. We got the room on 3rd floor and there was bad smell overall in the floor and really bad in the room. we are not sure it was due to the fact washroom window was opened when we got the room. The sink in the washroom is very small. Beds were comfortable...
