Older hotel but at least in downtown San Francisco

Posted Mar 26, 2015
Pros: Antique quality woodwork, wall paper, furniture. Good staff. Convenient bar and restaurant.....and Starbucks!
Cons: Replace ALL air conditioners. These are loud. The bearings and refrigeration are noisy and pulsating. Better price considering the quality.
Location: Not a lot with taking a taxi or BART. Lots of bums and street people. Urine smell, begging etc. Not a good part of Market St.
The check in time was early and easy. The staff was very good. The price was outrageous! Replace ALL air conditioners. These are loud. The bearings and refrigeration are noisy and pulsating. The sound carries to all rooms nearby and are constantly going on and off all night. Only a very sound sleeper could really get a good nights sleep. Maintenance did respond rapidly and we changed rooms. Lower quality but no adjustment on price. The new room had a bad loud pulsating AC but we just left it off. Rooms next door were either not using theirs or were in good repair. Finally got some sleep. Many of the room are adjoining with double doors and the noise transfer is unacceptable at the price they are getting. Try to get a room on the top floor.

Elevators stopped working. Got another key from the reception without asking for my name or ID. Unsafe hotel

Good for the price

Posted Mar 23, 2015
overall the hotel is good for the price I paid for. Shower spray power is weak. Have to wait a long time to approach the concierge. The restaurant in the hotel sucks, the worst I have ever been, thank god there's a diner across the street. The neighborhood is a little scary during the night time, a lot of homeless on the street.

Cool, historic place. A bit pricy, especially the parking rate to park at the hotel. Nice staff and great location, though.

Over-priced in bad area

The hotel itself was beautiful, clean, and comfortable. However, my price was raised $50 between booking and checking in, and parking was $40. I paid $250 for one night for a one bed room. Definitely better hotels in better areas of town.

Worst experience at a hotel in my life

Posted Mar 21, 2015
I flew in on a red eye from New York to SFO arriving around 1 am with my best friend for spring break. After our six hour flight all we wanted was our bed . When we arrived at the hotel I quickly notice the lobby did NOT look like the website and it was completely outdated . The stargazer lilies in the vase when you first walked in made the entire lobby smell like a funeral home. We checked in and got into the elevator to proceed to our room. As soon as the elevator doors opened I honestly did not want to get out the floor looked like it belonged in a scooby do haunted house episode where they're all running in and out of the rooms chasing each other. We got out and hoped for the best . Once we got to our room I opened the door and I was floored .. The room was a complete disaster. The bed was not made, garbage, used towels on the floor, the bath room was filthy and it was clear that the room had not been cleaned. The most upsetting part about all of this is I called hours before to confirm my 4 night stay and my arrival time for check in.. This was completely unacceptable . I complained at the front desk and asked for my money back (which I got back 4 days later) , the man at the front desk didn't seem to care about the reluctance of his staff. Now 2 am I had to look for a hotel in San Fransisco after a 6 hour flight !! .. We ended up staying at the hilton union square for about 70 bucks more, but at least I had a clean room and top notch service

HISTORICALLY Tired

Posted Mar 21, 2015
Pros: The location, price, & beds
Cons: Restoration of the hotel
Location: Market Street historic streetcars at the doorstep to Castro, Downtown, & Fisherman's Wharf. City Hall, Orpheum Theater
This hotel was new in 1906 and survived the Great Earthquake becoming City Hall which was destroyed. Traces of the City Hall sign can be seen above the main entry on Market St. The neighborhood is being renewed with all new and remodeled large private buildings. The hotel needs a total restoration to bring back her beauty and grandeur. For now. do not walk east on Market St due to the street trash people and boarded up stores for two long blocks. Take the subway at the hotel doorstep for only one stop to Powell St the City shopping area and cable car..

Good for the price

over all the hotel is good for the price I paid for, except it's kind of old and run down. The concierge receptionist is very slow, and give incorrect information about directions. The shower power is very weak, and sometimes I don't get the towel.
