Friendly staff but LOUD 24/7Posted Nov 17, 2013
this hotel was very clean. But likely the most loud and unsafe hotel I have ever been to. I paid roughly 134 per night to Expedia. Would not have paid more than 89 per night if I had known its condition. Not a great experience. Do you have to admit that the staff were very kind and friendly. Cleanliness was ok.

Hi Karla, Thank you for taking the time to review your stay with us, I appreciate your feedback as it helps improve service at our hotel and I am so sorry to hear that we were unable to meet your expectations. I appreciate your comments regarding the guest room noise and sincerely apologize for the inconvenience that was caused to you. We have an “Evening Policy” in place as one of many measures to minimize noise on our property. You can rest assured that our nighttime desk staffers do take noise disturbances very seriously, as it is our sincere intention to diligently enforce quiet hours. Unfortunately there are occasional guests who disrespect the common courtesy, and we address these issues as promptly and thoroughly as humanly possible on top of handling hotel desk activity. We always encourage guests to notify us of any such disturbances so we can take action to extinguish them immediately. We understand the concern in regards to the street life and general safety in our area as it weighs heavy on all of us. Over the past 20 years,we have raised over 3.6 million dollars in fundraising to support the Tenderloin Neighborhood Development Coalition in building a healthier community and we continue to work with the city to help clean up our area and look forward to better days ahead. Sincerely Diana - GM

Fun and funky adventurePosted Nov 10, 2013
A fun, funky property that is well appointed. The neighborhood is the worst, especially at night, but nothing they can do about that. A surprising negative was the electic, plug-in heater in the room. Guess it was too expensive to retrofit the old hotel with in-room heat and A/C. The only other negative was other guests walking by my room (several times) at 3am talking at full volume. Despite the front desk diligently telling folks at check in to be quite in common areas after 10pm, as well as signs posted throughout. I highly recommend for travelers seeking an urban adventure and discourage anyone that's seeking quiet, luxurious pampering.

A great value hotel in SFPosted Nov 8, 2013
Pros: Close to down town, cleanliness, free parking, free WIFI, good price
Cons: Noise from the city
Location: Location is quite central so access to Union square with high end shopping. fisherman wharf, Chinatown, little Italy, the embarcadero etc...
I stayed a night at the phoenix hotel. I arrived late at night. The staff was very welcoming and friendly, the room was very clean and recently upgraded, the bed was comfortable and the hot water in the shower was hot and came right away. The overall hotel; the hotel is an old fashion motel but with a modern upgrade with an urban feel to it. The overall hotel was very clean and free parking was provided which is very valuable in the city. Free WIFI was available in the room and was quite fast. This was a really good bargain as the hotel is not too far from union Square and the financial district. the only downside the noise as the hotel is on a busy street not far from downtown but there is not much they can do about it - that's the life in the city!

Cheap place to stay if you are young and hipPosted Sep 7, 2013
Pros: See above
Cons: sound proofing
Location: the hotel is in Little Saigon which isn't much of a neighborhood but the Asian Art Museum is right down the street
Our 3 night stay was enticed by this rock and roll hotel known to house musicians and bands. The neighborhood, however is full of homeless and not great for walking at night. The good things are: Free parking, free wifi and coffee in the am poolside. The good/bad news is that Chambers the restaurant attached to the hotel plays really loud music till 10 weekdays and midnight on the weekend with a very active "scene" by the pool. So if you want a peaceful stay this isn't the place but if you like to party and are into the club scene this is the place for you. All rooms face into the pool; we requested a room away from the fray on the second level. It does depend on your neighbors but i slept with ear plugs and once the music was off was able to get a good nights sleep. Hotel staff is great and helpful.

Not the greatest neighborhood but...Posted Aug 25, 2013
Not the greatest neighborhood but has a cool bar and restaurant. Rooms are old school retro with updates. I'd stay again for the right price.

A diamond in the rough, the Phoenix never fails to be an oasis in a part of town that can be a bit dicey. The price is very reasonable for San Francisco as well. No complaints

A good hotel in a slightly dodgy area.Posted Aug 8, 2013
Pros: The bar and pool.
Cons: The location
Location: Doesn't feel very safe walking around with a small child.
It's worth noting that the hotel is on the edge of an area full of homeless people and people with drug problems. Walking around the area with a young child felt a bit uncomfortable at times. On the plus side once you are in the hotel it is safe and having the pool would have been a great addition - had the weather been good enough! There is a great café for breakfast on the other side of the block (behind the hotel) called Brandas, highly recommended. Also the bar/restaurant attached to hotel is very cool!
