Postrio Restaurant and Bar - This popular Wolfgang Puck restaurant overlooks a garden and features a stylish decor with original paintings by Robert Rauschenberg and glass sculpture by Dale Chihuly. The large, open kitchen serves California cuisine with Asian and Mediterranean influences, with a focus on fresh local ingredients. Open for lunch and dinner daily. Pizzas, sandwiches, and other lighter fare are available at the adjacent bar.

“Great Character”

Booked this room based of positive reviews. Hotel has great character. The staff was very friendly. If you are headed to Union Square area it's located very close. The room was nice. But again, you are in a big city and there is a lot going on outside. So bring some earplugs if you are a light sleeper. I would definitely stay again. Happy Holiday's!!

Getting there

Rather than pay the expensive parking fees, catch BART from any station outside the city. I caught BART in Richmond. The station has free parking for Weekend travelers. Take BART to Powell ST. Walk to the Hotel is very short. Round trip cost less than $10. Parking for 2 days can run you $60-$80 for the weekend in the city.

“Home away from home”

We love this hotel - and come back every year - because it is cozy and feels like home. There is nothing 'boutique' about it and we dearly hope it stays that way! A very friendly staff makes our stay complete. Unless they renovate, we'll never stay anywhere else.

“Great concierge services, clean room”

Very clean, quiet, and quaint boutique hotel. Tim, the concierge, was excellent, so full of information. He recommended several places to eat and they were great. We got a great rate, and the location was fantastic, so close to Union Square and all the public transportation.

“Nice Hotel”

The Prescott is a nice hotel with very friendly and helpful staff. Its formerly amazing restaurant is now a bar and cafe only with very limited offerings. The chairs in the room were horribly uncomfortable. But it was clean, if small. It is very close to Union Square and shopping and the theater district, so it has a good location.

Area recommendations

I like Union Square or the theater district. They are centrally located and you can get decent rates. If you go to the financial district or Fisherman's Wharf, you pay too much for the room.

Getting around

Don't drive in the city. The parking is horrible, traffic is extraordinary, and there are many pedestrians--which is very dangerous if you don't know where you are going. The city is easily confusing because it has streets that change names and directions, and some streets are at weird angles. Take public transportation during the day and cabs at night. SF is a walking city, too. Just be aware of the many hills, and do a walking tour only if you dare!

What to pack

Nice clothes--SF isn't a fancy city, but most people don't wear typical touristy wear. Make sure you dress in layers--it can be cold and foggy in the morning and at night, then nice during the day.

Dining

SF is a foodies' heaven. There are many wonderful restaurants, from high dollar high brow to hole-in-the-wall. Every ethnic group is represented, including excellent Indian, Italian, Chinese and Japanese. There are many wonderful Fusion restaurants and great old steakhouses. Never eat in a chain in SF--I guarantee you can find something better!

“Good Union Square location”

Went for a one night getaway to the "city". Hotel staff are very friendly and helpful. Thought this would be better than staying right on Union Square, but still suffered sirens all night long. Complimentary wine and beer hour very nice touch.

Financial District. Not as loud after 7pm.

“Perfect Location”

I would very likely go back and stay here. It was centrally located, a safe neighborhood and quiet. As an older hotel, it was small but, well-maintained and the staff eager to please. Beds are comfortable and amenities pleasant.

“It was fine.”

I thought the best thing about this hotel was the location. Very close to all the action in Union Square. I thought the mattress was rather old and Holiday Inn Express out does comfort in beds hands-down. Boutique style hotels are hard to keep up so I will cut them some slack. Not really worth the $$$ big bucks I paid when compared to the same price for Intercontinental Hotel.

“Very well maintained hotel”

I picked this place as the most reasonable 4-star Expedia hotel in the union square area. No disappointment. My coworker stayed there as well, and got a two-room mini-suite that was nicer than my room, but my room was nice enough. Big bathroom, very handicap accessible if you care about that.

Area recommendations

Union Square borders the "tenderloin" area of San Francisco, known generally as the worst part of downtown SF, I guess.
