Stay away

Posted Aug 21, 2014
Pros: My departure
Cons: How bout pretty much everything.
Location: Great location next to the start of the trolley line. Lots of stores and restaurants
Old hotel in desperate need of renovtation. Paint peeling, Tile broken and to top it off a water line break that prevented all guests from taking a shower in the morning. Stay away until they get their act together.

Nice hotel close to everything

Posted Aug 19, 2014
If you prefer airconditioning then this place is not for you. Its an older hotel and its nice. Its close yo a major shopping centre Westfield. The staff are helpful. Its pet friendly but if you have allergies like myself it may not be suitable. It does need to be updated in some areas in order to justify the price.

Conveniently located

Posted Aug 18, 2014
An old hotel that is tastefully remodeled, very helpful staff, continental breakfast (croissants and delicious donuts - nothing healthy). Only negative is noise level as it's in the heart of the city. The main cable car line is right outside the front door (but you need to get up early to catch a ride).

Very charming and historic feeling hotel

Posted Aug 12, 2014
Pros: I loved the historic charming feel from the front desk to the hallways and the tall ceilings in the room.
Cons: The lighting in the bathroom could be improved. Also, the addition of something other that sweets for breakfast. Bagels and cream cheese or toast???
Location: Close to the Bart station, Cable Car turn around, shopping galore, restaurants all within walking distance.
The Powell Hotel was perfect for our 4 night stay. It was charming, clean, had a comfortable bed and the front desk staff were very helpful and friendly. Would definitely stay there again!

The Powell Hotel stands out among the rest having been one of the first buildings rebuilt after the big earthquake and fire that destroyed San Francisco in 1908 and is now a true San Francisco treasure. There is a true sense of pride here, and we are proud of the warm and caring attitude our associates extend to guests. It gives us great pleasure to hear that you would definitely return to us again!

Great location in the heart of downtown!

Posted Aug 9, 2014
It has a nice historic feel about it. The view into the courtyard is unappealing but the free happy hour is awesome! Met many cool tourists at it!

downtown SF

Posted Aug 8, 2014
Pros: Location is good. Easy access to BART and Muni public transportation. Free wi-fi. Free wine and light snacks in the early evening.
Cons: "Free breakfast" was just coffee and donuts. Need better selection. Rooms could use some fixing up (e.g. peeling wallpaper, grungy rugs, etc).
Location: Next to the Tenderloin...so some dodgy street characters as well as cheap eats.
I only stayed a night while traveling through the Bay area. I just needed a decent place to stay. Place is an old hotel--small rooms, old style architecture, history. Some renovations must've been done but not very well--peeling wallpaper in the small bathroom with what looks like black mold on the wall. Rug felt "used." Hotel is right by Powell Station so expect noise. Walls are thin. But it's in a good location for getting around downtown and the city.

Our Hotel is a historic facility having been one of the first buildings rebuilt after the big earthquake and fire that destroyed San Francisco in 1906. The Powell Hotel was built in 1908 and is a true San Francisco treasure. We understand that our furnishings and decor is somewhat dated, but please be aware our hotel will be undergoing some significant improvements in the very near future. At this time, our hotel only offers a limited selection of continental breakfast items, however, if you are looking for a full dining experience, there are many establishments just down the street from us.

If it is only about price and location

Posted Aug 8, 2014
Pros: Location
Cons: Clean room carpets. Improve bathroom shower, toilet, and room lighting.
Location: Near union square, shopping, bars and nightlife.
Great location not far from Union Station. Check-in was a pleasant experience. Hotel is in old building, old elevators (sound a bit unsafe when riding), partial carpeted and wood hallways that make squeaking noises, and numerous paint jobs covering the walls. Our room was small and the carpet looked dirty. The bathroom was small and the shower was small closet size and there was mold on the curtain. Water leaked onto the nearby rotting woodwork. If you want good location and must stay in this price range, stay here. If you can go to the next price point, spend the money and don't think about it twice.

Excellent Location!

Posted Aug 4, 2014
Staff very pleasant and courteous. The hotel room was small but clean. Location was perfect, with BART station and cable car access right outside the door; Muni light rail cars a few blocks away. Only complaint is week WiFi signal throughout hotel; had to spend time in the lobby each morning to upload blog material and other work. Overall happy with my stay and would definitely come again.

the hotel is in a nice area but the rooms we booked wasn't that clean, and it was too warm. the air condition is broken in one room and is not there in the other room we booked

Each guest room only offers a ceiling fan since there are no HVAC units available at the moment. Cleanliness is one of our top priorities here at the Powell Hotel, and regret if your guest room did not pass our careful inspection. We will be sure to address your comments internally, and appreciate you bringing to our attention.
