Friendly and perfectly placed

Posted Sep 23, 2014
Pros: Very convenient location
Cons: Our room was a little noisy as we were looking out at the cable car stop but we got used to that.
Location: Very good for shopping and night life, fantastic public transport links to all parts of the city.
The Powell is very well situated right at the end of Powell Street near Market. The staff were all very friendly and helpful at all times and went the extra mile in helping us have an enjoyable stay.

Clean hotel in the heart of San Francisco

Posted Sep 23, 2014
Hotel in great location; very clean; staff very nice, helpful & gave prompt assistance. It's an old bldg so bathroom has one sink, there is no A/C but there was a ceiling fan and we opened the window and we were comfortable. Good mattress. However when we arrived, box of tissue had only one tissue in it & sink was clogged. It took about 2 mins. to drain. We were in a hurry to leave for an event & left early next day so didn't bother to call maintenance. Suggest room gets checked before a guest moves in. Did not care for the breakfast. Had only very sugary and frosted doughnuts. No plain rolls with jam or honey or let's say oatmeal or cereal.

Only things good about it are price and location

Posted Sep 20, 2014
Pros: Price relative to other hotels
Cons: Too many to mention
Location: Excellent location.
Paid $200+tax and fees for this Old hotel with inch thick paint layer. Small room and very small bath. OKay if just for sleep at night. Otherwise, stay away from it.

We understand that our hotel is not a perfect fit for every traveler, but many guests greatly value our excellent price proposition and location in the heart of it all. There will be many improvements happening in the near future, and hope you will return for a much improved experience.

Close to the action

Posted Sep 18, 2014
Hotel is right outside the cable car turnaround but having a view of this will result in having lots of noise until 1.00am. As it isn't much of a view take a quiet room. Hotel staff are very nice. No tea or coffee maker in room but a cheap Starbucks is one block up for early morning drinks

We are definitely close to all the action in San Francisco, steps from Union Square, public transit and the iconic cable car turnaround. There will be some significant improvements in the months to come, and we encourage you to return to experience them firsthand.

Powell Hotel

Posted Sep 16, 2014
Pros: The staff was extremely nice and helpful. The room was relatively clean and the beds were comfortable.
Cons: Continental Breakfast was a little skimpy and the hours are short.
Location: Near great restaurants, central to Union square, market street, SOMA, china town and the financial district. Also near mall and ATT park.
I go to SF two times a year. This Hotel was OK for the price. This is an old hotel like many SF hotels. I like old but my room was next to the elevator which squeaked every time it was used and the noise radiated into the room. My room faced Powell and was right above the cable car turn around. However, the noise in the morning did not let me sleep in. A street performer was " bangin' on the bongos like a chimpanzee". After that, a banjo player, after that a singer. A couple was fighting at 3 in the morning in the street. The window was old and did not block noise. Also pull drapes were not available and so in the morning the room lit up so with the noise and light no sleeping in. So if quiet is a must for you, you should get an interior room, away from the elevator and without a window on powell

Thank you for your review. We are pleased that our staff and location exceeded expectations during your stay. At this time, the hotel offers a limited continental breakfast which consists of donuts and croissants as well as coffee, tea and juices. For those guests desiring a full breakfast the front desk has many great places they can recommend nearby. We appreciate your comments about the hotel and apologize for the issue with the noise. Being in the heart of the City there indeed is a lot of activity. We do have rooms that are interior facing and hope next time you visit the city you might give one of these a try.

Pros: location
Cons: larger beds
Location: right by cable car turn around
The room was very clean. The beds were very small twins. Thought they would be queen size. Sadly the hair dryer did not work and did not have enough time to wait for a replacement.

Adequate - close to activities and transportation

Posted Sep 13, 2014
Pros: Location, location, location
Cons: A little updating.
Location: Withing steps of the cable cars, Bart and Muni, giving you access to all of S.F. A short walk to Union Square.
We stayed at the Powell because we were taking in a show at the Orpheum. It was recommended to us by friends for its proximity to Union Square and public transportation and it met those criteria. The rooms themselves are clean but dated as is the lobby. There are no real amenities to speak of, but they do have a complimentary happy hour (which we did not take advantage of-doing other things-and can't speak to) and a "light" continental breakfast. The person that checked us in stressed "light" several times and that's exactly what it is. Coffee, tea, juices and donuts or croissants. The breakfast area is small and it was crowded. Personnel were friendly. The place is reasonably priced compared to other downtown hotels and served its purpose for one night. If we had been staying longer, I don't think I would have been happy there. Parking was and additonal $41. (The website and the in-room info said $31. We were charged $41 but adjusted the price when we called it to their attention.)

You can't beat our close proximity to public transportation and Union Square. Just to clarify to our readers, our daily parking rate is: $41 + tax per day. There are lots of exciting upgrades coming soon to the hotel and we hope that you will give us another chance in the future.

Horrible. This is not even a 1 Star. Hotel.

Posted Sep 11, 2014
Dirty facilities. Filthy carpets and bathroom. The twin beds are really kids beds. Construction noise inside. My room was directly on top of a messy roof top. Wish I could post the pics.
