“"Loved it, and will continue staying at Cariari Hilton anytime me and my family travel to SJO!"”

Beautiful property, very well maintain, not a secret to noone that food in Costa Rica is expensive, but food at Cariari Hilton is EXTREMELY expensive. Per example a cup of coffee ¢2,500.00 colones or $5.00, lunch 1 burger, 1 sandwich and 1 grilled chicken breast and steam veggies for our 21 months old infant total for all that ¢31,250.00 colones or $62.50 dollars.... get great food for half of the price at the shopping Mall across the highway... they have a great Italian retaurant, and our favorite: Rosti Pollos- awesome! also you will find McDonalds, KFC, Taco Hell, to mention a few. NOW, the staff at the Cariari Hilton is AWESOME!!!! they will make sure you are happy and they will satisfy every need, KUDOS to you maid and the housekeeping crew, they were incredible, they knew we were traveling with an infant and they made sure we had what we needed at all times. One more thing, this property should have all employees and all locals-costarican nationals attending seminars, conventions and meetin at their property (wich were a lot of them all week), parked their cars in the back of their Hotel parking lot and NOT it's guest, just an observation, overall, we will be back!

“Nice Clean and Comfortable”

We were only there overnight, but the Staff was very welcoming and made our short overnight worth it. Driving there CAN be a little awkward (as can any place in Costa Rica) so if you go, have a taxi take you there....worth the $10.00 USD. I would stay there again.

“Great Hotel for Tall People”

Luisiana had awesome beds and very artistic layout of the rooms. We had the kitchen suite for 2 adults and an 7 yr old, plenty of space. Came with a Mac computer, free internet and free international and local calls. Cool bathroom, but the shower head was up around 6.5 ft. and since it was open, half the bathroom got wet from the splashing. The kitchen cabinets with the dishes were also way out of my reach. Overall we loved the beds, extra roominess, and attention to aesthetic appeal. Would happily go back again even with the "tall" quirks.

Area recommendations
Getting up early to see Poas Volcano followed by LaPaz Waterfall Gardens, is a must do!! This was by far the most exciting day of our entire trip. La Paz might be aimed at the tourists, but it was AMAZING! You can easily spend an entire day there. Each item was more amazing than the last. I think we spent 5 hours there and I felt rushed. I wished I could have had another half day. If you are traveling with kids and they are missing some American fun, the Kentucky Fried Chickent (KFC) near the hotel is a stitch. It is 2 stories, with party rooms, a glass walkway on the top floor, a multilevel play place, and 4 large screen TVs playing kids favorites. I have never, ever seen a KFC like this. The food was typical except for the deserts, which had quite a tasty selection.
When to go
We went in late July early August, which is considered the wet season. There were a couple of thunderstorms and it rained or drizzled or clouded over every afternoon around 3 or 4. Didn't stop us. You just have to get started earlier and then enjoy a slow dinner. Meals/wait staff are not to be rushed around here. One unfortunate lunch took 3 hours for us to finish.
Getting around
If you are driving, make sure you rent a GPS unti from Costa Rica at the car rental. It is worth it's weight in gold! And find out what the locals' time estimate is to get somewhere, the roads are so much slower than you would think. (It takes at least 4 hours to get from the airport to Manuel Antonio which is ~135 kilometers)
What to pack
ATM CARD!!!! VISA not Mastercard or American Express. They charge a 15-20% processing fee to MC and AM EX. Almost everything is paid in cash.
Must see
Poas Volcano and La Paz Waterfall Gardens Manuel Antonio National Park Rainmaker Rainforest Aerial Tram (if you are not a zip liner)
Dining
Make sure you allow plenty of time for food to be served if you are dining at a more authentic location.

“AWFUL big infested hotel.”

We checked into the hotel, seemed fine at first. Bellman forgot to tell us that the key needed to be left in the reader next to the door otherwise the power will shut off, I thought there was a blackout at the hotel. The phones didn't work in the room. I also found bugs in my bed and was bitten all over. The next morning took a shower with scalding hot water. We were promised by the front desk that our breakfast buffet would be boxed and ready by 445am when we left for the airport and it was not. Glad it was for only one night, wouldn't stay there even if it was free.

Area recommendations
We really enjoyed Le Cameleon in Puerto Viego and Tabacon in La Fortuna which were only $50/$75 more per night. The Double Tree was a horrible value in comparison.

“Loved the surroundings and layout of the hotel”

The hotel employees treated us with respect. The room was really cleaned. The only issue we had is that during the entire stay, housekeeping did not replace the hand towels or replenish the soap. Each day we had to request hand towels.

“Very clean - not a bug in sight.”

OK, so I saw 1 cockroach, but after staying there for 7 days and not even hardly seeing a fly or mosquito, I was so happy. The hotel seems to be a little older, which makes it hard for me to deem it 4-stars. Food was pretty, good, but expensive. If you get the basic room with no food plan included, use room service instead of eating at the buffet, the continental breakfast for room service was great and the same foods that were out on the buffet. Pool was super clean. My only wish was that there might have been more live entertainment. One night there was a piano player at the bar though. There's a grocery store very close to the hotel so you can get drinks there for a great price and bring them back if you want a private happy hour.

Area recommendations
Book a day trip to Tortuga Island on a Calypso Cruise. It is worth the trip. Make sure to take that tour, the others are not nearly as good. The food and service was great.
When to go
April was so perfect. Not humid, not buggy. Wear sunscreen!
Getting around
It's not recommended to rent a car, taxis are fast and they know all the tricks to getting out of the traffic jams.

“Great place to begin our vacation”

After a long day of travel we loved arriving at this little jewel! The people were friendly, and the hotel lovely. Nice pool, open air restaurant and other amenities. The hot tub wasn't working but do you really need one in Costa Rica? Good for couples and families.

Comment from the hotel's management
thank you very much for your comments and for choosing Doubletree Cariari for your stay in Costa Rica. I have forwarded your note to the entire staff thanking them for providing consistent service and making our guests feel at home. We are very sorry that you encountered trouble with the hot tub. We conduct routine maintenance on this equipment; unfortunately some parts were delayed in arriving to the country in April. We have now completed the works and the facilities are restored. Once again thank you for your comments and look forward to have you back soon.

“Close to the airport”

I have visited CR many times over the past 13 years. I rarely stay in San Jose, but when I do I stay near the airport. Cariari is a great option, but the service is very different now than when the hotel was owned by the Real group. Back then, they would be all over you... but the rooms were $200/night so you get what you pay for. The biggest disappointment is the $12.00 taxi charge to the airport. Most all other comparable hotels have a free service... and the actual meter charge from the Cariari to SJO is about $3.00. I thought the charge was in poor taste. I would not stay here again alone just to get to the airport. There are other options that are similar. The place is very family friendly so it is worth the stay with Kids. Safe and controlled.

Area recommendations
Barrio Amon: Great historical location and most hotels are owned by Ticos. Not safe after dark, but few places are in San Jose.
What to pack
Leave your leather boots behind! If you are on an extended trip in the wet season May-Aug, you will be better off with rubber boots! Leather never dries and your feet will be very unhappy. Just look at the locals... no leather! AND NO sandals if you plan to go into any forested areas. Use close toed shoes... safer for insects and snakes!
Comment from the hotel's management
thank you so much for your comment. We take all feedback seriously and sincerely regret we did not meet your expectations this time. We believe that you have confused our hotel with another one, as Cariari has never been owned by Real group. The private taxi ride to the airport cost of $12.00 is in line with comparable hotels in the area. We do offer a shared shuttle service that operates at designated times for $8.00 per trip. All travelers can arrange this service by contacting our concierge department directly. We have conducted a survey and validated that Registered Taxi fares from Cariari to San Jose downtown are in the $20.00 range. We appreciate the feedback you provided us as it allow us to look into our customers experiences and work to improve all aspects that we can following our commitment to all our guests.

“good for family with kids”

Clean, quiet and can walk to nearby mall. Room is big and free wifi at lobby is nice. Pool is big. Jacuzzi can be 3c hotter. I would stay here again.

Area recommendations
not much area in SJ. Go to downtown Mercado for a hour or so.
Getting there
double tree is a bit hard to find and if you miss it the 1st time, hard to turn around on highway 1. Tip is, 1: stay on the right side of 3 lane from airport. 2: if you see Marriott turn off sign and when hit the peak of hill, turn right into side road.
Comment from the hotel's management
Thank you for posting your review about Doubletree Cariari. We are glad to hear that you found our facilities suitable for your family and that they had a good time here. About the hotel location, we are on the road parallel to Canas Highway #1. Because the highway runs higher than the hotel grounds and there is lots of vegetation, sometimes it is difficult to spot us as you drive by. When driving from the airport stay on the right lane, take the right exit beneath the Belen bridge and follow the road until you see the hotel sign on the right. We appreciate your feedback.
