“Good for the price, no pastries”
It is a historic hotel, well preserved, the rooms are small but clean and comfortable, well located in downtown San Jose, in the center of Silicon Valley. There is only valet parking and it takes a long time to get the car, specially at night or on weekends. The hotel does not have its own restaurant(s), by the lobby there is an independent Italian restaurant with good food and desserts but they do not have pastries or fresh orange juice at breakfast time 'because it is not profitable'. For the price and location I would go back although there are other better options nearby.
“Location and charm”
This is a charming hotel with a fabulous restaurant and a location that cannot be beat (it's steps from the San Jose Tech Museum). There were many high class touches, such as the super comfortable bedding and the very nice L'Occitane soaps and shampoo that the hotel provides. The downside is that this is an older hotel, with walls that are a tad thinner than they might be in a newer hotel; we awoke to the sound of someone having a conversation next door. The street noises outside were somewhat loud, too, although this is to be expected at the beginning of the holiday season during San Jose's Christmas in the Park. All in all, these acoustic problems did not detract from the comfort of our stay, We will definitely stay here again.
“Nice, Old-Fashioned, and Stylish”
The Sainte Claire is kept up very nicely with stylish, old-fashioned decorations. The common areas, conference rooms, and ball room are all impressive. The guest rooms are on the small side, but clean and comfortable. The walls seem a bit thin, thus you'll hear your neighbors. The bathrooms are petite but nicely appointed. The single restaurant, one in the Il Fornaio chain, serves delicious breakfast, lunch, and dinner. It's comfortable to hang out around the Il Fornaio bar at night also. Just remember that it's not a cheap place to eat. Location is great, close to several downtown San Jose businesses, as well as freeways and dining / shopping. The staff are all friendly and competent, except occasionally showing some stress when assisting guests. Pretty good overall.
“Centrally located, nicely restored older hotel”
Can't beat the location of this hotel. We came to town for a Roger Daltrey concert in the civic center, which is just across the street. If you're looking for ultra modern you should probably stay elsewhere, but if you're looking for nicely restored and friendly staff, this is your place. Oh yes, the hotel restaurant, Il Fornaio, is probably one of the best in San Jose.
“Classic Style and Comfort in San Jose”
Lovely Gilded Age style. Most comfortable bed I've ever slept on. And the walls are absolutely soundproof (they don't make 'em like they used to). The only negative is that cars are valet-parked, and not cheaply. If you're going for business in the heart of Silicon Valley (Santa Clara, Sunnyvale), you'll have to deal with a half hour of stop and go traffic. So I'd have to mark it down to a 4 out of 5.. Otherwise, I'd say it's great.
“Nice Hotel”
The hotel was sweet and simple yet elegant. The staff was very nice and helpful.
“Absolutely wonderful”
When we come to San Jose, we will definitely stay here and I will recommend it to everyone I meet. Its a great downtown location. Only took me 5 minutes to get to City Hall.
“very nice old downtown hotel”
Had just returned from a long trip in Asia and was hoping to find a hotel not as depresssing as most US hotels in this price range, and this hotel was what I was looking for. An old restored downtown hotel with all the modern conveniences and amenities, good service, and even a business center with up to date computers and a printer. Service was good, efficient, and pleasant. Room very attractive. Very nice antique furniture, deep featherbed and lots of down pillows, original fixtures throughout, or equivalent, all in excellent condition. Lobby and adjoining public rooms also very attractive. Liked the original stairs all the way up. Elevator pretty old too, but worked well enough. Restaurant was booked for a wedding the night I was there so couldn't try dinner, but breakfast was good. Downtown San Jose is pretty dead even on a Saturday night, but plenty of other good restaurants within walking distance. Parking in the immediate area is expensive, but I parked my rental car overnight a few blocks south off Market St. after the parking meters ended and it was ok next morning.
“Not impressed with the hotel, but the locaiton is excellent”
The hotel is old and not well maintain. The rooms need a lot of work specially the bathrooms. I will go back to this hotel, but only I get the rate cheap and maily because of the location. Please work it out, the hotel needs improvements!
“Charming!!!”
This is a wonderful property! Old and charming, beautiful decor. Incredible staff. The room was clean and comfortable. Awesome location, walking distance to everything. Highly recommended!!!
