Fresh and friendlyPosted Nov 25, 2013
Pros: It was fairly new, fresh feeling and comfortable. Staff were helpful and friendly.
Cons: Tidy up garden area on ocean side of building, clear some of the trees to allow some ground floor view of the ocean.
Location: We stayed there for Hearst castle which was well worth the visit. Plenty of fairly average restaurants in the area. Black Cat Bistro was pretty good!
I think when looking for a private hotel I am looking for something that is fresh feeling - something more than just clean, as well as friendly and welcoming and this was how ElColibri felt. Spent 2 nights there in mid November. Room was pleasant, the gas fire was nice to have in the late evening and early morning. My wife had a hot tub the first evening there in the room. Some have commented that having the hot tube half in the room and half in the bathroom was not ideal, it could use some shutters for those who wish privacy, but my wife watched TV from the tub. Unfortunately fawcet etc. was thus on the wrong side of the tub. All in all a good effort, wish it had a view from the ground floor, but we were only in the room late evening and early morning. Very easy access to restaurants along the coast and to both areas in Cambria.

Attractive hotel but with problemsPosted Nov 7, 2013
Pros: Good location and nicely decorated.
Cons: Improve comfort of room and bed.
Location: Near the hotel a boardwalk begins that runs along Moonstone Beach which offers good views of the shore and beach access.
We watched as the hotel was being built and decided to spend a two night stay there to check it out. We found the hotel be attractive and our one bedroom suite was very nicely decorated. Unfortunately, while the suite was very nicely decorated, it was very uncomfortable. The sitting room had two couches that looked very attractive but were extremely uncomfortable to sit in for any period of time while reading or conversing. The sole source of heat for the suite was a thermostat controlled fireplace in the bedroom that did a poor job of heating the sitting room. The room had a lot of attractive marble on wall surfaces. The bathroom was finished with marble walls and a marble floor. There was no heater in the bathroom and the marble floor was very cold to walk on with bare feet. On the day that we stayed over at the hotel we returned to our room at about 2pm to find that our room had not been cleaned. We ended up sitting in the lobby while somebody was found to clean our room. The included breakfast was very basic with cereal, breads and fruit. We had just completed a driving trip back and forth across the US where we stayed in Embassy Suites and Hampton Inns. All these hotels greatly exceeded the quality and comfort of the El Colibri.

small boutique hotelPosted Nov 6, 2013
Pros: large rooms, quiet location
Location: Hearst Castle about 15 miles away, wineries, and the beach
the hotel only has about 30 rooms and they are all on the ground floor. the second level is dedicated to a spa and the basement level is where you park your vehicle. the rooms were big and airy. mine had a gas fireplace and a Jacuzzi tub. the hotel does a wine and cheese tasting most every weekend in the lobby bar. the breakfast is continental style and I would say it is average. You can walk to the beach which is about 300 yard from the hotel.

Nice getawayPosted Oct 28, 2013
Pros: Location, staff, upkeep
Cons: Internet connectivity, tap water (not something the hotel can control)
Location: Cambria: Food, shopping, exploring the Scarecrow Festival
My girlfriend and I stayed two nights. The complimentary breakfast was reasonably stocked and good quality: yogurt, breads, cereals, coffee, juice, fruit - we left satisfied every morning. The staff was very pleasant and attentive. Our room was comfortable and well-kept - the gas fireplace worked to keep us warm. The open-air jacuzzi was lovely and open late. Parking was easy and it was a quick walk to the side of the hotel to get on a wooden boardwalk to the beach. No view from the room to speak of. We could also walk from the hotel across Highway 1 to get to the shops of Cambria. This was a reasonable "base" for wine-tasting in Posa Robles - about 45-60 minute drive. Hearst Castle is the other direction - maybe 15 minutes. The Scarecrow Festival was a surprise treat. Good restaurants and shops in Cambria. Only minor downsides: the internet connection was a little slow (could not stream music consistently) and the tap water tasted terrible (there was bottled water in the "wellness Center" upstairs).

Centrally locatedPosted Sep 12, 2013
While this property is not on the water, I feel it is still ideally located. It is at the southern end of an exstensive boardwalk trail which we took for nearly two miles. We also were able to walk the same distance south through the town of Cambia and get to all of the restaurants in town on foot. The continental breakfast is just that - yet while simple it is of good quality with enough variety for any traveler. The size of the property meant that the eating area for breakfast was never over crowded and the staff kept all parts of the food beverage area continuously stocked.

Very nice hotel.Posted Sep 2, 2013
Pros: Overall, it was clean, nicely appointed, lovely fresh flowers, good location, nice free underground garage, good amenities in the room, quiet.
Cons: Housekeeping needs to be a bit more the thorough. For the cost per night, turn down service should have been part of the amenities, also free wifi.
Location: Very centrally located to Moonstone Beach and the shopping district.
Very nice facility, very nice continental breakfast, good parking. Only gripe is that housekeeping didn't empty our trash in our room when it was serviced. The location is very nice. The staff was nice and approachable.
