Old and a bit run down for sure. Rooms are just ok. Hotel grounds are not pretty. Pool area is not clean. We stayed because we are Sideways fans and wanted the "experience" of staying at the Windmill. I knew what we were getting into. Honestly, it isn't nice and it's too expensive for what you get. But, if you are a Sideways fan, why not stay for a night?

Very close to Solvang

Pros: The room size
Cons: Fix the the windmill and make it spin
Location: Solvang was really close. That was awesome.
It was a nice hotel to stay at for the night. We just wanted the room to sleep and then head to Solvang in the morning. It was the closest and most reasonable price.

Dissapointed customer

Cons: cleanliness
We booked 2 rooms at this hotel for April 11 to 12. When we first got in to the rooms assigned, both rooms were both very dirty and have not been cleaned yet and so we went back to their office to complain. They changed our rooms but the room that was assigned to me , the curtain rods were falling off from it's handle. We just fixed it ourselves because we are too tired to call and have them come in and fix it. In my brother in-law's room, he said there were ants by the bath tub.They should double check if rooms are clean before they assign it to guests so that the incoming guests does not have to see an unpleasant sight of an unclean room. They should check every aspect in the room even a falling curtain rod and not just be content in cleaning the room.

Disappointing Return

Pros: The staff was friendly and accomodating. They took care of the pillow problem promptly.
Cons: Old facilities need to be updated.
Location: Visit Solvang and surrounding areas.
Having stayed at this hotel several times in the past, we were disappointed how it has deteriorated. The air conditioner/heater was loose in the wall, sink was badly rust-stained and we only had one pillow on our bed. There were cigarette butts on the top of a number of the plants outside our balcony. The continental breakfast was basically cereal and toast. Last time we were there they had make your own waffles and pastries as well.

Would not be my first choice in Buelton, Solvang

Pros: Good location, close to Solvang and Santa Ynez. Lots of restaurants close by.
Cons: Our tub/shower looked like it had been "repaired" by a classroom full of toddlers. It was a disaster. The rest of the bathroom & sleeping area were ok
Location: Solvang, Santa Ynez, Olivios, Chumash Casino.
Tried checking in around 1:30pm when we arrived in the area, but a very grumpy male desk clerk told us that our room would not be ready until closer to the official 3pm check-in time. We did not have a problem with that, and let him know we would head into town and return later. What did bother us was his sour and unfriendly greeting, as if being hotel guests and showing up only interfered with his business. He should have greeted us warmly, and then nicely explained about the room not being ready yet. Ironically, when we did come back and check in over 6 hours later, the room assigned to us had never been cleaned! Maybe someone else was still checked in to it; when we saw that the room was obviously in a state of array we immediately closed the door and left. Another clerk, now on duty, gave us a different room. It had been cleaned, although the tub/shower enclosure was full of plaster stains and horrible attempted repairs.

Overall out stay was ok

Room was clean, bed was comfy, bathroom was in need of makeover - looked like repairs were made without care of effort, toilet clogged.

Girl's Weekend not quite Ruined

Pros: Although not cheap, it was the least costly room available in the area. Although the bathtub was nasty, the sheets seemed to be clean.
Cons: Attitude, cleanliness, upkeep, attitude, hot water, working refrigerator, attitude, not running a card at 8:00 in the morning.
Location: We went for a little wine tasting in Los Olivos and the Wicked Wine run at the Gainey Winery.
First of all, they put a debit hold on the card I had used to reserve the room as of the morning of check in, despite the representation that I would not have to pay until check in. Even the desk clerk at check in recognized this as a problem if one wanted to (which I would have) change cards. There was no hot water, the refrigerator didn't work, the exterior was in very poor upkeep, the staff was rude - at check in they were arguing with another patron - and, when my roommate tried to get water to make her medically-necessary shake, she was pointed to the drinking fountain. I have never stayed at a hotel/motel where the staff was so unhelpful and truly did not care whether the patrons were satisfied. They had an attitude that we should all be grateful they would allow us to pay money to stay where the windmill featured in Sideways was sitting in ruination.

Room not Ready and outdated

Pros: Location (Solvang)
Cons: Update the whole place or bulldoze it. (leave the windmill)
Location: Near Solvang and Buellton.
Checked in and went to room. Both rooms not made up yet. I think they have one maid. Went back to front desk and given new rooms that were made up.

Convenient to Solvang.

Pros: Relatively quiet. Convenient location.
Cons: Clear instructions to activating air-conditioning. Struggled a little at first, but found I did not need it afterall.
Location: Nice bar and billiards on the same property, nice restaurant across the street, convenient to freeway, and Solvang only a few miles away.
I took the chance to request early check-in, and initially was informed nothing would be available until 3pm. But the manager searched and found a room that had just been cleaned. He sent someone to double check it was in fact clean. It was great to have not just been turned away to come back at a later time. It allowed me to physically rest before my afternoon race. Thank you for making the effort.
