quiet and old charm hotel

Posted Jul 19, 2014
Pros: quietness, staff, proximity to Solvang Theater.
Cons: Garden area rooms could be brightened up a bit.
Location: Wonderful bookstore ( The Book Loft) a few blocks away and the PCPA theater productions staged at the Solvang Theater very close to hotel.
Very quiet hotel and excellent staff and the continental breakfast is also excellent and staged in a lovely room. We are returning next month to see another PCPA production.Highly recommended.

Very enjoyable stay.

My wife and I spent one night at The Petersen for our anniversary. While I booked their cheapest room via Expedia I did ask for an upgrade when we arrived. They had some rooms available, but only offered the upgrade if I paid the difference in room rate. Oh well, it was worth a try. The hotel was nice, it fit right into the decor of Solvang. The room itself was clean and I liked having the sink outside the toilet area. The air conditioning worked very well and was quiet. Our room overlooked the main street, but it was much quieter than I expected; didn't really notice it (but I live in LA). We skipped their breakfast and went across the street instead, but it looked like standard hotel fare with danishes, cereals, oatmeal, and hard-boiled eggs. We got a tasting coupon for Lucas & Lewellen upon check-in and enjoyed that right off. Overall a nice stay; the location is great so if you're simply looking for a place to lay your head then there's no reason not to choose The Petersen if their price is right.

Outdated hotel - needs updating and cleaning!

Posted Jul 14, 2014
Pros: Staff was courteous.
Cons: The decor and furniture.
The only thing I liked about this hotel was the proximity to the town otherwise I probably would not stay at this hotel again. For starters, it had huge black stain on the red carpet, it had a stain on the furniture, and it had a questionable stain on the bed frame. Also, the bed creaked even with minimal movement. Even though we had some delay in checking in, the front staff was courteous. One thing that stood out for me was when I asked my husband to get ice from them and he said when he went downstairs, one of the staffmembers, who holding a bag of ice coming from one of the rooms, asked if he needed ice. He then proceed to offer the ice and said, "This came from another room and it didn't look like they used it coz it's still sealed (it was a cable tie, btw). You can have this or we can give you a new one." I don't think the staff should've even offered that ice just because "it didn't look like they used it." My husband asked for a new bag.

Quant hotel in lovely Solvang.

Posted Jun 26, 2014
Pros: The bed, garden view room was quiet. Location was perfect as once we parked we didn't have to drive at all to eat that night or sight see in town.
Cons: They should have wine glasses in room. And robes for shower.
Location: We went to wine country and went to 6 wineries in and around there plus lavender farm on Roblar. Ate at Ceccos that night and it was great pizza!
Well my husband warned me about Solvang that the hotels were underwhelming and it's true. While the lobby and staff are lovely and the breakfast good, the room needs updating. The rule is if you spend over a certain amount per night it should have robes! The room had a smell, wallpaper is showing its age, shower head needed replacing and the carpet was old. 4 poster bed was comfy and nice though. TV and new AC was good. The wine tasting upon arrival was a nice touch. We stayed here due to proximity to wine country and Fess Parker Inn was booked.

Decorated in 1980 by grandma & not changed since

Posted Jun 14, 2014
Pros: The way the free breakfast was served; nice bedding on a bad mattress
Cons: decor; mattress, faster coffee in AM;
Location: Lots of kitschy shops and barely edible restaurants; wine area for tastings; for us-- the vintage motorcycle museum
The location and staff were just great. The free breakfast mostly continental except for the boiled eggs as protein, was served on linen table cloths and staff brought your coffee and juice. This was so much more civilized than the free for all of pre-bagged prepared off site foods at other "free breakfast" hotels. Now for the down side. Probably half of the rooms are street side and thus noisy late and noisy early on the most heavily travelled road in Solvang. I kid you not, our room had dirty old dusty-rose colored carpet from the early 1980's. The mattress was hard and uncomfortable although probably not that old. Nice bedding. All of the furniture was your grandma's style. The love seat was lumpy and stained and squished all about. It was that medium blue from the 80's. The wooden furniture did not match which is fine but there were 3 or 4 different styles & woods in our one room. The wall paper was little flowers in pink & blue with a narrow accent band near the ceiling. All the mirrors were gold and overdone. Like I said, really poor taste and beyond cheesy. It was clean. The ceiling tiles over the sink were rusted and falling apart. No coffee in the room; no ice in the hallways but they do deliver. Starting at 7 they will deliver hot coffee in a thermal carafe to your room. It took about 25 min for ours to arrive. Solvang itself is for a certain audience. We are not that audience so perhaps this hotel would not offend others as much as it did us.
