"Hotel Papadopoli Venice, highly recommended!"
We struck lucky with this choice in one sense as we only discovered after booking it, the impact of being so close to Piazzole Roma the drop off point for all road transport, whilst others dragged their bags up and down bridges and crowded streets to get to their Hotel, or paid for expensive canal transport costs, we were settled in minutes. The hotel is smart and welcoming and met our expectations. We can't comment on the bar or restaurant as we chose in advance to pre-book various restaurants around Venice, but we saw nothing that would have put us off eating here. in fact the restaurant looked very inviting. Being so close to the Grand Canal and a short walk from the main walkways, we found it to be a great base from which to start our daily journeys, while remaining well away from the hassle of the main tourist traps

"just perfect"
This hotel is just perfect, specially for the single traveler. Travel for the single person in Italy is almost prohibitive with extra costs added, but not so here. A great room with shower and a Murino chandelier. On the 'wrong' side of the canal away from the tourists, the hotel sits right on the water with a deck to enjoy a coffee and watch the life of Venice going past. A great breakfast in the second floor dining room with, if you take your turn to sit out there, a balcony to have an extra coffee. Explore the alleyways behind the hotel to discover the real Venice and enjoy an evening meal with the locals. Friends staying near Saint Mark's Square paid four times as much and didn't have half as much fun as I did. Very easy to walk to from San Stae even with heavy suitcases but the - very expensive - water taxis drop you off at the landing stage of the hotel which is a great way to 'make an entrance!

"genuine venetian b & b."
Lovely place for a short break. Gabriella (The owner is a lovely person) The only drawback is, that if you have to come back to rest during the day you will have to spend it in your bedroom as the lounge/breakfast room is locked up.

"Nice hotel on Grand Canal"
Hotel well positioned for cruise, rail and bus. Spent two nights after a cruise to explore Venice. We took people mover to Plaza Roma and walked to hotel, just two bridges to cross took less than 10 mins. Reception were helpful and we purchased a Venice travel card to use water buses. We were up graded to canal view on second floor with views of Grand Canal and across to railway station. Room had character, fabric wall coverings and wood shutters. Buffet breakfast was included. Roof top restaurant gave great night time views. We used the vaporettos to explore. These tended to be crowded with queues at the station. With the pass we purchased at the hotel (can be brought on line in advance) at least we did not have to queue for tickets. It could be worth going one stop to Plaza Roma and catching a vaporetto there to get seat when going along the Grand Canal. We went to Murano and the very picturesque Burano islands both well worth a visit.

"Good location, clean and welcoming"
Perhaps the most photogenic hotel on the Grand Canal and the only one where you can have breakfast in a rose garden while watching the worlds go by, Ca' Nigra is located near to transport but is in a quiet square away from crowds. The rooms are clean and comfortable, and the standard continental breakfast was perfectly acceptable; there are plenty of cooked options if you prefer (although we didn't find it necessary). They do not do evening meals, but there are so many restaurants to try that this really isn't a problem. The staff were helpful and eager to please. We would happily stay there again.

Pocket Guide: Santa Croce, Venice Romantic Hotels

At the start of the Grand Canal, Santa Croce is set immediately across from the bus station and railway station. It is a peaceful quarter adjacent to, but largely unaffected by the visitor hubbub. The picturesque Ponte degli Scalzi is a great place for watching the busy canal traffic and there are many fines churches to explore off the beaten tourist track. The Rialto Bridge is only a 10-minute walk or boat ride away.
