Sunrise Springs Inn and Spa is literally a high desert haven, with seventy lush acres of spring-fed ponds with gardens and wildlife. Meandering paths guide our guests to private hideaways found throughout the property, including patios next to fountains, benches under trees, and decks overlooking ponds. Our year-round freshwater wetland is part of a spring that supplies water to El Rancho de las Golondrinas and the Santa Fe River Canyon, and we’re also located next to the Leonora Curtin Wetland, a thirty-five acre nature preserve. The preserve features rarely seen New Mexico wildlife such as white-faced Ibises, colorful wading birds with long legs and long curved specialized bills which migrate from Mexico, and the Virginia Rail, a small, thin, marsh bird which is attracted to the preserve’s wet marshes filled with cattails and other reeds.
The history of our Inn can be traced back to the earliest Spanish settlements in the Rio Grande valley. By the early seventeenth century, Sunrise Springs had become a paraje (or resting place), on the original El Camino Real de Tierra Adentro, the road connecting Mexico City with Santa Fe. The lush solitude, which impressed the first Spanish settlers, still remains, and Sunrise Springs Inn and Spa continues to be a source of relaxation and rejuvenation.
Sunrise Springs is only twenty minutes from the historic Santa Fe Plaza. Founded by Spanish missionaries as their northernmost colonial capital in 1609, Santa Fe is one of America’s oldest and most beautiful cities. Near the Plaza you will want to visit the famous Loretto Chapel with its miraculous staircase, the San Miguel Mission (the oldest church in the United States), and the Palace of the Governors, the oldest governmental building in the United States. Our staff will help you to prepare for the day’s exploration. Enjoy the best of both worlds – the goings-on and lively activity of downtown Santa Fe during the day, and the tranquility of Sunrise Springs into the evening.
Sunrise Springs is also located next to El Rancho de las Golondrinas (Ranch of the Swallows), the premier living history museum in the southwest United States. The museum offers a step back in time to the history, heritage, and culture of 18th and 19th century New Mexico, with colonial buildings dating from the early 1700s. Docents and museum staff walk through the ranch in period clothing to demonstrate how life was lived on the frontier in early New Mexico, and special festivals and weekend events offer visitors a rare view of the celebrations, music and dance of the Spanish, Mexican and Territorial periods of the Southwest.
The owner of Sunrise Springs, Megan Hill, has endeavored to create a tranquil, aesthetic, and inspirational experience for her guests. The magic of the spring waters creates a nurturing oasis, and this is reflected in Sunrise Springs’ strong commitment to eco-friendly practices that support the environment and our local economy.

“Eating at Blue Heron is like being on vacation.” Anne Hillerman, Albuquerque Journal North, June 2008
Blue Heron Tavern is proud to serve natural, local and organic cuisine to the public and our guests Thursday through Saturday, and for Sunday Brunch. Enjoy Chef Michael Gintert’s creative selection of pastas, pizzas, salads, sandwiches, and his special Lone Mountain Ranch Kobe Beef Burger.
Join us on the The Blue Heron patio for dining overlooking the peaceful and tranquil ponds and water features during the summer months.
In addition to our seventy acres of wildlands that surround our ponds, a seasonal outdoor pool and a spa tub are on site. Other recreational amenities include a sauna, a steam room, and a fitness facility.
There are boundless opportunities for hiking in the hills that surround us, and we are located next to the Lenora Curtain Wetlands, a natural preserve, and Rancho de las Golondrinas, is a living history museum located on 200 acres in a rural farming valley next to Sunrise Springs just south of Santa Fe.
The museum is dedicated to the history, heritage and culture of 18th and 19th century New Mexico, and it opened in 1972. Original colonial buildings on the site date from the early 1700s, and historic buildings from other parts of northern New Mexico have been reconstructed at Las Golondrinas.
Villagers clothed in the styles of the times show how life was lived on the frontier in early New Mexico. Special festivals and weekend events offer visitors an in-depth look into the celebrations, music, dance and many other aspects of life in the Spanish, Mexican and Territorial periods of the Southwest.
