A slice of european living in Zona Colonial

Posted Feb 3, 2015
Pros: I could step inside and leave the city behind.
Cons: Mosquito control. Immediately outside our room was a covered area where the mosquitos were waiting out the stormy weather. They followed us in.
Location: Art galleries tucked into back streets, Los Tres Ojos, local theatre production.
After traveling around the Dominican Republic, sort of roughing it with guaguas and homestays, we spent our last two days in great comfort at this hotel. The rooms were very clean, the hot water endless, the airconditioning up to the task of caribbean warmth. Staff was as helpful as was humanly possible.

Excellent large corner room in a 400 year old building. Good breakfast, professional and friendly staff and an overall excellent hotel. Will certainly stay again.

A beautiful historic hotel in the Colonial section

Posted Jan 6, 2015
Pros: The architecture, and it is well decorated. It also is apparently well located, but I did not have time to enjoy the city.
Cons: The staff seemed stressed. The concierge overwhelmed. I have no idea what was going on but there were not that many guests in the lobby.
Location: Cathedral
Entering this hotel, you will be very pleased with the restoration and the initial welcome from this hotel. It ends there. Trying to get any service required persistence and initiative. And all I wanted was some soup. But my husband finally went to the bar in the pool area and asked someone there and I finally got my soup ($12). Even though we had a room on the street level, it was quiet and comfortable. The internet was nonfunctioning except in the pool area. I guess the pool was the spot to be. Next morning, we asked for a taxi before dawn. There was some discussion among the driver's outside and we were ushered to a taxi across the street. The car had no headlights! What? And then I saw he had no speedometer either! But that was not a concern of mine - him seeing his way was, but he managed. And we arrived in one piece, with luck. For a 4 star it has some serious issues. But in the DR it may be the best you can get.
