“Family Hotel”

The hotel staff is very nice and the facilities as well. The restaurant has good food. The location is not really good, far away from everywhere. You need a car to ride around. The rooms have a really small double bed (my wife and I almost did not fit the bed and we are not big at all) in the UPPER deck. To be reached there is a very UNSAFE stair to climb. We were travelling with a small child and we were concerned at all times.

Area recommendations
The hotel is far away from everywhere. There is NOTHING close to it.
Dining
The restaurant has really good food and the enviroment is nice, by the pool.

“Clean, quiet, good value, and great customer service!”

Hotel Mathios is the best hotel I’ve ever been to for customer service! Our ferry was 4 hours late departing from Athens and I had no way to call and tell the hotel. No worries though, our driver was waiting for us at 3:30am! He seemed unconcerned that it was so late and helped us find our room and key upon arrival to the hotel. Our room was clean, spacious, and comfortable. Kostas helped us quickly figure out how to make the most of our remaining 3 days. It included a catamaran volcano cruise which was leaving in an hour, but Kostas got hotel beach towels for us, informed the driver that we needed to stop for sunscreen, and were driven directly out to the boat, where they were waiting for us. This was expensive, but certainly the highlight of our trip! When we returned that afternoon, Kostas had arranged for our rental car to be delivered to the hotel, and stayed until we had signed paperwork. We drove around the island for the next two days, beach hopping. Kostas also arranged for us to just leave the rental car at the airport so we could still drive around on our last day there. The only thing I would mention is to get your breakfast included in the hotel price, it’s expensive per person otherwise. It was invaluable to us to have everything arranged so quickly and reliably by Kostas. Thank you so much!! We hope to come back again!

Area recommendations
Akrotiri is a small but great southern location; you only have to cross the street from the Mathios reception area to see the dramatic caldera views. Rent a car!! Its worth it for doing more with your day - and waiting for the bus in the hot Greek sun is awful. Driving is fun and leisurely... please note all these "times" I mention later are at a speed of about 25-30 mph. The hotel has free parking right in front. The only place we paid for parking was in Oia. As a geologist, Red beach is not to be missed and is only 5 minutes away - and the best "beachcombing" beach is Kamari, near the airport (20 mins). I wasn't particularly impressed with Oia over Fira - Fira is much closer(15 compared to 50 mins to Oia), has similar cliff and caldera views, more shops to peruse, and you can park for free at the hospital. If you happen to mess up booking the room like I did and not including breakfast, don't worry, the Panorama cafe down the street has a bread, jam and coffee/tea option for inexpensive prices.
Getting there
I liked how we took the ferry TO Santorini, and left through JTR. When you arrive by boat, you motor right through the caldera and can see the steep cliffs with Oia and Fira on top of them. Even at night, this is pretty. When you want to leave, the JTR airport is small - no long lines for check in/security. There's also a rooftop garden/snack bar AFTER security, where you can sit very comfortably while you wait for your plane.
What to pack
If you like swimming/snorkeling at the beaches, bring a rash guard or a shorty wetsuit. The water is cold even in June! As for shoes, I got around well with wet/dry Keen/Chaco style sandals, even for light hiking to Red Beach. Bring a hat and sunscreen too.
Dining
You can recoup money spent on excursions by eating gyros from street stands, which are filling and cheap.

“Lemonade”

Why lemonade?. Because it felt like they wanted to made it and I was the lemon for it as they tried to squezee me as much as they could. The owner help us to rent a car which we were to able to choose and it was below average and not in great condition (it even had a hit at the back), rental in other island was cheaper but as Santorini is more touristic we thought it was ok but later on we found we could have rented a better car for less. Upon arrival we were asked for a credit card and passport and the owner kept my friend´s passport initially we thought he forgot to give it back but when we asked for it later he stated he kept everyone's passport. The day we left we could see that he had everyone's passport copy and only my friend's original. The shower leaked from one side of the door when you use it flooding the floor. It is posted that internet access is provided but when we asked for the password the receptionist said that we had to pay for it after asking the owner. Every question you make to the receptionist will be answered that you have to talk to the owner or that she has to ask him first. Breakfast is below average. TV signal was poor. If you want to stay there and you are planning to rent a car, moto or so rent it at the port. You will get a better deal and you can pick the one you want and you will avoid paying the hotel for transportation (a great savings).

Area recommendations
Visit Oia and Fhira.
Comment from the hotel's management
Thank you for the review ,I have to say that we like lemonades with sugar or not we all ready replay to you in different site , and now we see another review , We rent you a car with f .insurance I case you have accident you pay the minimum access this is service in any ways , yes you can have it cheaper but you risk it much with out insurance travel round sorry but , never the cheapest is the best , this is what I learn now 26 years work in tourism when we rent a car why you are our hotel guest we want you protected in Naxos or Ios car are cheaper I agree ( I don’t know with what conditions they give it to you don’t look only the cost what is included ) yes in Mykonos is more expensive every place has differed costs , Now about the passport I really don’t understand you , yes we do copies and we add it in our Hotel books we don’t keep you for 30 minutes in reception , we inform all leave us the info and be back to take it , some guest they leave passports in our safe, I don’t understand were is the problem what I will do with your passport . if your shower it was little liked and you Tv has not the best signal please call reception we have some one to fix it , in your home or my home can happen also if my employ want to confirm one information for that reason there is a manager to ask she is new and she is very good with my guest we have Wifi and you need a code for that we just add a new program . We have good breakfast also with home made cookies white bread brown bread marmalades , honey, yoghurt ,variety of cornflakes, chocolate , eggs ,2 ham 2 cheese ,tomatoes fruits, juices coffees we also have it included in our special offers . Guarantee for holidays is very important risk for few Euros to pay less , I don’t think this a deal of a holiday this is what my experience so far thank you again we are not the best in SANTORINI but we work so hard to make every one happy it is not so easy.

“A beautiful island”

Great Island, great staff, nice hotel. I thought my 4 night stay in Santorini was memorable. Great food on the island, beautiful weather and of course the incredible blue waters. Mathios is a good choice and a pretty good value.

Area recommendations
Very tough to chose one area of the island over the other, but as beach people, we really enjoyed Perivolas beach.

“"Akrotiri's Hotel Mathios is Wonderful"”

I reserved the Grand Maisonette for 4-Half Board that included full breakfast and dinner for four adults. Our accommodations were lovely and charming. Kostas, the owner, was a wonderful host and the entire staff that help run this family owned hotel are friendly and professional. Our room had a small terrace with a table and two chairs that was perfect to enjoy a glass of Boutari Greek wine. Bring your own beach towels to use at the TWO kidney shaped pool(s) on the property. I suggest renting a car to explore Santorini. Very affordable and the most effecient way to get around the island. Hotel Mathios is approximately 10 miles from the airport and an easy drive. We went to Thira to walk around and were ultimately so happy that we did not choose a hotel in all the hustle and bustle of Thira. We took a beautiful drive to see the sunset in Oia that is not to be missed. Kostas was most helpful when my Mother's toe got infected from her walk up to the Acropolis in Athens. He referred us to a private doctor in Thira who was very knowledgeable and the medications he prescribed worked wonderfully. Lastly, dinners at Hotel Mathios were delicious homecooked traditional Greek cuisine. EVERY meal was four courses, excellent and not to be missed. Be aware that all beverages at dinner are purchased through the hotel and are reasonably priced. We would absolutely return to Hotel Village Mathios next visit because of the friendly family atmosphere, accomodations & delicious Greek food. Oopa!

“A lovely stay”

A lovely hotel. My room had a loft! I liked how the restaurant/bar was all windows and open to the pool area. The location is a bit remote, but it's very easy to rent a car to get around the island and car pickup/drop-off at the hotel can be easily arranged.

“Lovely stay”

The hotel is very nicely maintained and the staff were very accommodating. We were particularly pleased and very much entertained by Eddie from Romania. The village is off the beaten path, so it was very peaceful; we're glad that we rented a car - we were able to go to out-of-the way places in the vicinity. Would go back there again and stay at this hotel.

Area recommendations
The beaches - Red Beach and watching the sunset from Ia or Fira.

“Amazing!”

Hotel Mathios is one of a kind. I am in the wine business and have traveled many places but Santorini was a gem. We went there on our honeymoon not knowing what to expect. Costas the son and manager was sooo helpful. He set us up with a rental car (Which you need, trust me!) and set our trips. He made the trip stress free and the prices he got us were the best. He also pointed us to good wine. Being in the business i'm sometimes picky and one of the best wines on the island was their familie's. Also beautiful view with pool, vineyards and water. Can't wait to go back.

“Nice, relaxing experience!”

The hotel is near a small village...perfect for anyone (young or older) who wants peace and quiet. You can rent a car or take a bus to the loud, bustling parts of Santorini when you wish, but it's nice to come home to a peaceful setting in the evening. The hotel serves genuine, home-cooked Greek food...that's hard to find in many of the tavernas. I felt truly refreshed after two weeks there. Nice people & they leave you alone to relax.

Traveler's tip
There's a little roadside stand near the hotel that sells delicious fruit & fava.

“A very friendly hotel! - They work hard for you to maximize the enjoyment of your stay.”

What can I say - I thought this would be the only visit I would make to Santorini but because of the staff here I want to come back. Two pools, close proximity to beaches, good restaurant and bar where you will have the opportunity to make new friends. To recommend this hotel I will say two more things. During my 5 day stay I met Greek couples that say this Hotel is their preferred vacation destination and I would send or take my best friends here without hesitation.

Traveler's tip
Get to know Costas the manager; he has fair prices and good suggestions. Just let him know what you wish to spend. You may find some less expensive entertainment on the island but then you have to pay a taxi or wait two hours for the bus. Also if something happens to you and you need local help, you probably won't get that from the rental agency.
