“Very Modern Hotel with Nice Restaurant”

If you see this place from the road, you'd think it was just a typical road-side motel, but it's actually a lot more than that. It's a very modern, sleek-looking hotel that's located a fairly short distance from Saumur on the opposite side of the Loire. (Saumur's about a 10-minute drive away.) The staff there speaks enough English to get by (especially if you happen to have just a little French yourself), and the restaurant is quite good. (It's also apparently popular with locals, which I take as a good sign.) The hotel is located in a sort of semi-suburbuan/semi-industrial area (so you won't be walking anywhere), but it's also not very expensive, and it's very up-to-date, including free wi-fi. (If IKEA built a hotel, it would probably look a lot like this one.) If you're interested in Saumur or the Loire river valley, you could do a whole lot worse than to stay at Hotel du Parc. Definitely recommended.

Area recommendations
Both Saumur and the surrounding area are chock-full of historical sites, beautiful chateaux, and nice scenery. Don't miss the French armor museum, which has one of the finest tank and military vehicle collections in the world. (Although admittedly, some of the English translations need a bit of help, and there are one or two vehicles that are mis-identified.) The wine tasting at Chateau de Brézé, just a short drive from Saumur, is excellent. You'll probably end up buying some of their wine. Definitely try the sparkling red and their white desert wine. The young man who provided the tasting studied in Australia and speaks excellent informal English.
