historic Abbaye

Posted Oct 7, 2011
Whole Abbaye complex really neat--ticket for free tour included in hotel rate--nice room, but a little small--very nice restaurant with great service--they even stayed open late one night for us to have dinner!!--helpful desk staff--very reasonable room rate--could have used better signage to help you locate the place.

This hotel was in a fantastic location on the sight of a famous historic abbey. Guests are free to explore the abbey and the restaurant prepared beautifull food - although the portions were small! Our pre booked room wasn't ready on arrival so we had to wait an hour before it was ready. The staff however were really helpful and we enjoyed our stay.

Fabulous location within the grounds of the Abbey

This is an amazing spot. Our third stay here. Set in the gounds of the abbey in one of the stone buildings the hotel is beautiful inside and out. Rooms are smart but small (former monk's cells??) with tiny bathroom but completely adequate for a short stay- more than compensated by the surroundings. Restaurant is in the glassed in cloisters, again fab atmosphere. Dinner is pricey but delicious. Amazing breakfast buffet incl scrambled eggs and sausages (unusual in France) at good price.

Beautiful but very hard to find. Dirt hotel entry, expensive breakfast with powdered eggs! Nice garden area. Had not my ancestors be buried there would not have stayed there.

A Privileged Position

The position of the hotel within the grounds of this great and beautiful abbey makes it a privilege to stay here. The very reasonable rate, courteous service and excellent cuisine are an added bonus.

Very memorable place

What a great place to stay! I can't imagine staying somewhere more peaceful and calm than Fontevraud. Even though we stayed there as a base for checking out the chateau's in the western Loire, this place needed half a day itself to meander through its grounds and buildings. The service was great; English spoken very well; the room clean, comfortable, and quiet. We didn't try the restaurant as we ate at the cafe just outside the pedestrian gate (decent enough) This place is as safe as it gets. You use an intercom to get in and out and foot traffic is restricted by the main entrance. This is a very historic Abbey (Richard the Lion-Hearted, Eleanor of Aquitane and Henri II are buried in the chapel). I still can't believe that we paid so little for this place. Absolutely worth it!

A good hotel with an interesting location in an old abbey. The restrurant for dinner and bnreatfast was expensivne but very very good. The room was nice but not great . No air conditioning and openign windows did not do it either. Room was small even by europe standards, but adequately furnished. Just not great.

Loved it

This is an amazing destination hotel. The room was small, as it was a former monk's cell, but was very nice and overlooked the orchard. We spent several hours the next day exploring the 12th century abbey. Dinner was excellent.

Fontevraud is a very special place full of charm, history, beauty, and tranquility. It is a great place from which to explore the western regions of the Loire Valley. I will stay there again and happily recommend it to all!
