“Stay "At Home" in Downtown Shanghai”

In my most recent visit to Shanghai, and to this hotel (I've stayed here three times in 13 months), my traveling colleague--on her first trip to China--exclaimed, "I could live here!" And that's the reason for getting a room at the Ascott. The room suites are ideal; comfortable, modern but not antiseptic. The location is ideal; there's a park across the street, great shopping; American chain eateries--including the famous coffee establishment--within blocks; plus a larger array of higher end local and international dining options. It's a short cab ride to the Bund and the famous Shanghai traditional market (though the enterprising walker can get to either place). The bar and restaurant are good (if pricey); the breakfast buffet is the one disappointment, but when the weather's good you can sit out on the 6th floor roof terrace and it really doesn't matter whether the food selection is ideal. But the real value for a western traveler is comfort that gives the feel of home. Front desk staff is solid providing good service, but it's not the same as a traditional hotel (e.g., no concierge). English can be sketchy in individual cases.

“Shanghai's Best...”

Enjoyed our stay here, we liked the hotel's close proximity to Xintiandi, Huaihai Rd shopping area & Metro station. Definitely will stay here again.

“Clean lobby. No-so-nice room.”

Check in process was awful. At first hotel staff seems to think I have a wrong receipt (showing we booked a one-bedroom, not a studio). After they finally agreed it's their mistake, they want us to accept the studio anyway since they were sold out. When we refused, they suddenly found an avialble one-bedroom. When we walked in this one-bedroom, we were quite shocked to find the condition of the room, wall, carpet, kitchen counter etc. We do not believe this can be a newly restored service apartment. Took some pictures... The room really doesn't look clean.
