“Good localisation but not renovated room”
We stayed in Astor hotel for 7 days. Hotel is based in the city center, the front desk speaks english. The room was clean but quite old, internet is quite expensive 20 dollars a day.
“The best in Shaghai”
The htel was great, best location and very nice architecture, it is like stepping back in time, i was very impressed with the list of gusets that stayed in the hotel in the past the rooms were very clean and the staff did a good job, i would reccomende the hotel .
“A true piece of Shanghai history...”
A place for those of you who wish to step back in time with modern annuities.. A true gem that will always be my choice in Shanghai...
“Old fasioned - for good and bad”
Spent three nights here. First, if you like a nice big room with high ceilings and old-world charm, this is for you. My room, a Richard Executive was beautiful. Hardwood floor, area rug, lots of open space with a very modern, big, well appointed bathroom. That said the TV is about a mile away from the bed. There is a DVD player provided. However, getting everything to work properly was maddening. I had people in the room twice to get things going and I usually have no problem with tech. If you like your hotel with a nice high-end bar and plush seating in the lobby, this is not your place. The lobby, although grand, is spartan. The bar and little cafe are nice, if a bit musty. You can tell they are rarely busy and were empty most of the time I was there. I ordered a hamburger in the bar one afternoon and it was ghastly. Couldn't get past the first bite. The staff is nice and their English is reasonably good. The hotel is only 4 or 5 stories and if you've been to Shanghai you know that honking one's horn every 30 seconds or so is a practice passionately embraced by CHinese drivers. And it goes on all night. So pack your ear plugs, as I always do.No need for converters, your US plugs will work. Great location, right in the Bund, right at the Budai bridge. All things considered, for the price this hotel is a great value. I will stay again.
“Great location”
Staff was very helpful and friendly.
“Good value”
A little like an old dowager - comfortable but past her prime. Location couldn't be better - a 5 minute walk to the Bund. My wife and I spent a week in one of the "executive suites" which was huge and comfortable. Bathroom had a entire wall of glass which was a bit unfomfortable until we noticed that it had an electrically operated privacy shade we could use. A very large staff that made genuine efforts to be helpful. Not always successful because of the language barrier. Price was right however and all in all we highly recommend it.
“Good value at a great location”
The Astor House Hotel is a historical landmark and is a two-minute-walk from the Bund. Just walk over the bridge (Wai Bai Du Qiao) across the Suzhou Creek and you’re right into the thick of the action... the Bund is such a wonderful sight at night. There is also a nearby subway station (Tiantong Road) on the new line 10. We were lucky enough to get an upgrade from a Celebrity room to an Executive room and so we had more space and comfort. Considering the very reasonable price found on Expedia, I found this overall deal to be a great value for Shanghai. While the interior style was very much reminiscent of an old European building, we had all the amenities of a modern hotel. The bathroom had both a bath tub and a shower. Internet was available for free in the room, though it required an Ethernet cable (provided), a common occurrence in China. The service was good, the staff quite professional and there was no issue with English at this hotel. In conclusion, I recommend this hotel for international travelers looking to stay right by the Bund at a reasonable price.
“They don't build'em like this anymore...”
Shanghai's Astor House Hotel is not for everyone... but perfect for me. I'm a believer in saving architectural treasures and a history buff, so I was impressed with the Astor before stepping on its wood and marble floors. After nine evenings, I was also impressed with how the hotel's staff embraces and accentuates the Astor's majestic character... like chosen stewards on a mission of operating, maintaining and sharing a national treasure. My fiancee and I stayed in one of the Celebrity rooms... where Albert Einstein once stayed. The room was fantastic... wood floors displaying craftsmanship in construction and design... and the room was mammoth in size and comfort... antique furniture... tall ceilings... good air conditioning... windows that open... and a bathroom that was very modern in contrast to the rest of the room. The room was a bit noisy... three stories from the busy Shanghai streets... sandwiched between ballrooms in which weddings, reunions and business was conducted every evening. My fiancee walked up or down the stairs to view weddings from the hallways.... to see the people dressed in elegant attire perfectly suited to the hotel's dignity. I had to drag her back to the room more than once... afraid she would invite herself to the festivities... and now she wants us to return for our future wedding. My fiancee and I will be back... and that is the ultimate compliment.
“Not luxe but servicable”
Although the hotel is tired and has seen better days, the location was convenient to the Bund (although there is nowhere in the immediate neighborhood to eat) and they readily upgraded us to a suite for much less than the rates posted on the web. The staff was eager to please and very helpful, although the English of most of them was not strong. For the money, a comfortable and useful place to stay to see the sights in Shanghai. No pool or other amenities that make you want to spend time at the hotel, though.
“Reasonable choice for short travel”
Comfortable location, spacious rooms, friendly personnel
