“Good location, nice breakfast”

45 mins from Pudong Airport Walking distance from Huai Hai rd (shopping) short cab ride to Pearl Tower Aquarium and they do a nice job with the buffet breakfast. Staff speaks decent amount of English and is helpful.

“Good location, rooms need a remodel”

The location of this hotel is great, but the rooms are more like a motel, not a 4-star hotel as it indicates on a sign outside.

“A great bargain in Shanghai.”

The hotel was very clean and in a quiet area of Shanghai. The staff was very attentitive to our needs. Rooms were clean. The hotel seems a little dated but is well maintained. The up-charge to use the hotel/fitness area was a little steep so we did not use these facilites. We had teenagers with us and felt safe to let them explore the area at night.

Cabs were easy to get and very cheap to get around Shanghai

“Hidden cost increase your final bill a lot”

The charges for the wireless internet were expensive. The free buffet breakfast was only for one person but two of us were traveling so breakfast was an expensive add on. The health club was not free. The hotel staff were helpful and the hotel was clean and in a good location but there are better values in Shanghai for your money.

“Very satisfactory hotel”

Clean hotel, well run and friendly responsive service. It is a great location and less than a 10 min walk to the subway. My only objection to the hotel is that they charge too much for internet and they don't let you sit in the lobby lounge without ordering something, even though there is no other place to sit...I hope they correct that.

“could be better, but not bad”

* decent rates, decent walking distance to West Nanjing Road Line 2 and South Shaanxi Road Line 1&10 subway stations, for convenience * excellent business center with high-speed internet access (for a fee) * morning breakfast is really superb with made-to-order omelettes plus many other hot/cold selections; your best meal of the day * really rude health club staff; they have a policy that in order to use the swimming pool you must wear a hair cap (males and females) but yet they don't provide swim caps free, they sell them; I don't know many travelers who pack a swim cap (especially business travelers, especially men) and their sale price is outlandish; so their swimming pool remains just a visually-nice, most-often-unused sight when you first enter the health club; workout gym area also filthy - this was the most disappointing part of the hotel

Area recommendations

Jing'an & Huangpu Districts - has the most expats, western shops, and your best chance of English-speaking/reading capability if you don't speak/read Chinese

Getting there

The Maglev (magnetic levitation) Airport Express train from Pudong Airport (PVG) to Longyang Road Line 2 metro subway station must be experienced at least once. I witnessed it go over 430km/hr (that's over 267mph)! It is the world's fastest train in regular commercial service - traversing the 30 km in less than 8 minutes! You don't even feel it moving!

Getting around

Unless you speak Chinese, walking and the Shanghai Metro subway system are the way to go. There are now over 11 subway lines - Lines 2 and 1 are respectively the most popular, and both go through the center city huge People's Square station. Upon arriving, you'll want to buy a 'Jia Tong Ka' - Shanghai's version of the Hong Kong MTR Octopus Card - a fare card that you wave when you enter and exit a subway station; automatically calculates the fare and deducts; you can top up when at low balance. Once you have this - I'd start off with 100RMB (20RMB is a refundable deposit) - you then never need to have cash for traveling the entire subway system.

Must see

The Shanghai Urban Planning Exhibition Center is probably the best kept secret in Shanghai - probably because it doesn't have a very compelling name. But I promise you will not be disappointed - whether you are a teenager up through the mature, male or female. Of course, from May through October 2010 it's the World Expo in Shanghai.
