“Great Value, Central Location”
Hotel is situated in a central (5-10 minutes walking distance to the Bund and the East Nanjing Pedestrian Mall), and safe location. It is also 5 minutes from the metro and hence it is easy to get around by metro (in addition to taxi options). I actually liked the neighborhood around the hotel and thought that it added a nice local flavor (real Shanghai), and great options for meals near the hotel. In fact, I liked the locality around the hotel in comparison to E Nanjing Rd pedestrian mall as it was way too touristy and tacky (in my opinion). The Bund was spectacular and the city wonderful.
“Return customer and not disappointed to stay again!”
The Salvo Hotel Shanghai is an excellent value comparable to the 5 star higher priced hotels in the same area. Great location just a short walk to the Bund, Nanjing Road shopping, People's Square and the Metro. My executive suite had a fantastic view of the river and Pudong with plenty of room, a comfortable bed and large clean bathroom. The staff all speak very good English and are attentive to guest needs. Western breakfast a big plus too. Will definitely stay at the Salvo again!
“4 stars!? Not a chance!”
First off, internet is too slow...hardly useable. The restaurant for breakfast never has enough seating room, forcing you to sit at the same table with strangers. If you get up for seconds, someone will be sitting there when you get back!? The "do not disturb" sign on your door apparently means "please do come on in". Overall, good location...you can walk to Nanjing road, Yuan garden and the subway system, among other places, but the hotel was a let down. Would not stay there again.
“SlowDSL”
The furniture of my room was extremely traditional and amazingly nice. The room was separated into sleeping and working quarters and each was spacious and with a TV. The selection at the breakfast buffet was good. The location was convenient and near the subway station, but it would be impossible to haul your luggage from the subway station to the hotel since there was no access for the disabled. I literally needed to climb many stairs at the subway station and right in front of the hotel. My 40lb luggage was killing me right there. So I took a taxi when I left. Although the hotel offered free internet and each room had a desktop computer for internet access, the speed of internet was very slow and it was impossible to check my emails from the US.
“Staff are friendly!”
Good location and neighborhood. However, floor hallway needs more light and it would be nice if rooms are high ceiling.
“Nice hotel - definitely recommend”
Nice hotel in the heart of Shanghai. The view was SPECTACULAR. Checking in on the 31st floor was a bit of a bother. Didn't see any hookers or pimps as mentioned in previous reviews. Stayed in an executive suite, with an outer sitting/office desk area (computer provided and TV) with adjoining room with pocket door divider. Clean comfortable bed. The bathroom was a bit odd layout, toilet in small area by sinks, then two glass doors that slide open to a garden tub (big enough for 3 people...) and a shower unit that had jet capabilities. Bathroom/shower/tub didn't have that super clean feeling you get on 4+star rated hotels, but it worked perfectly for me.
“So so”
Mixed bag. Decent location. Service marginal. Room excellent, Expedia special price escellent
“A fairly good hotel to stay in Shanghai.”
Hotel location is good, we had a business suite and was very spacious. Walking distance to a good variety of restaurants and fruits stands.
“Better than imagined”
I had stayed in an international hotel in Beijing and was very, very disappointed. When I arrived to the Salvo, I was delighted to say the least. The staff actually spoke english and were very helpful. The room was clean and in good working order. The bed was incredibley comfortable, with a great view of the Pudong (esp at night!). The bathroom was clean in good working order as well. I'm quite tall, so even though the tub looked very inviting, I wouldn't have been very comfortable. However, the shower head was adjustable, so there were no acrobatics needed to wash my hair! The local area is great, a block or two from the Bund, and Nanjing Road. Small local shops and eateries right out the door, and taxis were always available for hire. Unfortunately, the one thing I would complain about is that the wireless was not working. The wired internet connection, which is free, was on a short leash - allowing only use at the desk. In the scheme of things, not a big deal. Others have mentioned being propositioned outside the hotel. This is a common occurrence in China by my experience, one that as a female did not experience-but friends have. Never had any violent or aggressive situations, though. I would definately recommend this hotel. Of the places I've stayed and seen in Shanghai and Beijing, I re-book this hotel again. There's a reason it's recommended and the rated as high as it is.
“Great for walking”
While the hotel is only a couple blocks from the nearest subway station (East Nanjing Rd), if you need to get to the International Convention Center like we did (just one stop on the #2 line for 3 Yuan), it's also in a great location for walking to the Bund or the Yuyuan Gardens. My only complaint is that the room's internet could have been a lot faster.
