Perfect Location.....But!

Posted Apr 27, 2014
Pros: The location
We spent five nights at the Mansion Hotel in the French Concession area of Shanghai. We particularly like small boutique properties and areas that are a bit quirky ....we thought we had nailed it. The location is excellent, and our room was quiet and of a decent size....but it could be sooooo much better. Every contact with the hotel and staff could only be rated as poor to average, from our arrival when our taxi driver had to shout in the hotel foyer to fine someone, anyone, alive (!) in reception..from there it stumbled and staggered ....the place is in need of a good scrub, well a complete redecoration to be completely honest, carpets are dirty, decor is overstuffed, velvet uncomfortable faux Victorian, reminiscent of something out of Agatha Christie novels, so bizarre in Shanghai...and one ghastly grubby armchair in a room for a double, such a no no in hospitality as someone has to sit on the bed ..a meal in the hotels much mentioned restaurant, not on the roof, was chaos, no tables laid, one table occupied with smokers, and so a beer and one entree after an hour of scuttling and rushing mindlessly...we have up! The French Concession area is a leafy interesting part of Shanghai, very easy for exploring the many little boutiques, book shops, secret little garden spaces and plenty of food opportunities.... The Mansion Hotel could be wonderful, but sadly missed the boat for us....

Different spot in Shanghai

Posted Dec 10, 2013 on Hotels.com
The decor of this hotel is amazing and the location in the French concession can't be beat. I had three slight issues. One was that my room was a toasty 25 degrees no matter what I did to the thermostat. Two was I found a long black hair in the bathroom (attached to my foot) which clearly wasn't mine. It didn't bother me but other people might be bothered by it. And since they're renovating the restaurant upstairs construction noise started at 8 am. I was up so again wasn't too bothered but you might be. But these are minor points and overall it's a fine hotel.

Location: Good shopping and restaurants.
Enjoyed our stay, but restaurant was under renovation. Would stay again.

Disappointing stay this time around

Posted Nov 24, 2013
Pros: Great location....
Cons: Heating turned down
Location: Dragonfly Wagas
Booked a twin share room through Expedia as friend and I had travelled up to shanghai. Got to hotel to check in and told no twin share room (& had expedia contacted me - which they hadn't). Staff assured us that an equal bed would be placed in room and this wasn't the case. Staff had out a fold up bed in the room to make it twin share. Very disappointing indeed. Heating in room was too hot. Turned thermostat down, then off but room heating must be separate to thermostat (not sure how that works...) as room was so hot couldn't sleep.

Hotel with individual class

Posted Sep 16, 2013
Pros: Being different and not boring.
Cons: Breakfast
Location: Centrally located in french quarter close to metro.
This hotel has all the comfort and class without having the antiseptic boredom of comparable hotels in its price range. It is and feels different from the usual boring hotel experience. There was some confusion about breakfast as their restaurant is being renovated. The hotel gave us a bottle of wine to make up for the inconvinience. Location etc. couldn't be better.

Elegant and...strange

Posted Sep 7, 2013
Pros: Its grandeur. Its linens. The comfort and beauty of the furnishings. The bathroom -- WOW!
Cons: Tablecloths in rooftop restaurant should be ironed as should the shirts worn by the servers. The restaurant seems shabby.
Location: Near Sprouts, Japanese restaurants, Sichuan Citizen, Wagas and LOTS of clothes shopping. Also near a lovely park full of life morning and night.
We felt like we were royalty when we entered our incredibly spacious, beautifully furnished and well-lit room. We felt like we were on another planet when we used the toilet and had the choice of soft or normal rear or front clean followed by a dry cycle! Huge bathroom with massive tub and intense 4 head shower/massager. Strange, though, is the lack of attention to functionality: no dressers, no drawers in the bathroom for toiletries, and only several hangers in a large armoire for clothing. Breakfast was very good -- plenty of healthy choices and very efficiently served. Front desk staff helpful and professional. A very pleasant experience overall.

The antidote to the concrete jungle.

Posted Aug 12, 2013
Pros: A change from the usual 5 star blandness
Cons: Nothing
Location: 10 mins by taxi from the Bund in a quiet area---the former French concession. Taxi from Pudong airport, 175 Rmb
The opposite of the usual high-rise, anonymous de-luxe Shanghai Hotels of which there are hundreds. It's low-rise and furnished with antiques---or at least reproduction antiques. Bathrooms though are Hi-tech. During the recent stifling heat, it was beautifully cool. The area has tree-lined streets with 2 or 3 story buildings many of which are now high-end boutiques. Lots of small bars and restaurants within a couple of minutes walk. It doesn't have all the facilities of a 5 star hotel eg. no pool or gym, but in comfort terms it's 5 star, and has many other attractions which more than compensate for me. It can be expensive, but look out for promotions which make it extremely good value.

Hotel with character, excellent staff

Posted Jun 1, 2013
This hotel has lots of character, and the staff is very friendly and helpful. If you're looking for a modern high-rise hotel, this is not the place, but if staying in a place that has the feel of the 1920's-1930's is appealing, you are likely find a stay at the Mansion much to your satisfaction. There's an excellent restaurant just across the street.

Shaghai surprise

Posted May 22, 2013
Ideally located in the heart of the French Concession, this is an authentically restored Art Deco mansion cleverly converted into a small hotel with many impeccable period touches, but modern convenience and a luxurious atmosphere, all at a reasonable price, The staff are courteous and helpful, only the breakfast is poor, and not up to the quality of the rest of the hotel.
